"Erb’s Palsy" and "Brachial Plexus Paralysis" are names used to describe a brachial plexus nerve injury, which can be suffered by a baby during child birth   If the baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pubic bone, the trauma to the shoulder, known as shoulder dystocia, could result in permanent damage to the nerves which control movement and feeling in the shoulder, arm and hand.

The brachial plexus is a group of nerves which come from the neck area of the spinal cord and pass under the collar bone to the arm.  When these nerves are damaged, the muscles controlling the shoulder and arm are weakened.

SYMPTOMS OF ERB'S PALSY

While many babies who suffer an injury to the shoulder at birth are able to recover, there are many who are left with permanent nerve damage, resulting in severe limitations on the use of the arm.  Sometimes these children are left with no use of the arm at all.

It is important to recognize the symptoms of a brachial plexus injury and obtain treatment for injuries to the brachial plexus nerve. Proper treatment can improve functional use of the arm and limit the effect the disability will have on the child throughout their life.

CAUSES OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURY

Obstetrical brachial plexus injury is the medical term used to describe injuries to the brachial plexus nerves which occur during the birth.  The majority of these injures occur as a result of a birth emergency where the baby's should suddenly becomes stuck. In many cases, the failure of the doctor, hospital and nurses to identify and react to this complication results in the permanent nerve damage to the baby.

TREATMENT FOR ERB'S PALSY

While many mild cases of a brachial plexus injury resolve on their own within a few months, severe nerve damage will require long periods of treatment and substantial expense to improve the functional ability of the child to use the arm.

Permanent damage to the brachial plexus nerves can severely limit the use of the arm throughout the child's life. Even if a child is able to deal with the injury during adolescence, it may present a much more debilitating problem later in life. There are several Erb's palsy treatment options, which could include surgery and therapy.

The proper use of medical care can reduce the risk of a brachial plexus injury and in many cases erb’s palsey could have been prevented.  If a medical mistake at birth results in a brachial plexus injury, the child and the family may be entitled to compensation and settlement benefits.
