Recognizing a seizure in a newborn baby may be difficult.  Signs or symptoms of a seizure may include:

  • eyes rolling upward or fluttering
  • stiffening of the body
  • movements of the tongue, lip smacking or excessive sucking
  • uncontrolled jerking movements or body twitching
  • staring spells or periods of unresponsiveness

Seizures are often seen in infants with a brain injury such as Cerebral Palsy.  At the time of birth, a medical mistake may result in a lack of oxygen to the brain or a trauma to the baby, resulting in cerebral palsy or another birth injury.
