Recognizing a seizure in a newborn baby may be difficult. Signs or symptoms of a seizure may include:
- eyes rolling upward or fluttering
- stiffening of the body
- movements of the tongue, lip smacking or excessive sucking
- uncontrolled jerking movements or body twitching
- staring spells or periods of unresponsiveness
Seizures are often seen in infants with a brain injury such as Cerebral Palsy. At the time of birth, a medical mistake may result in a lack of oxygen to the brain or a trauma to the baby, resulting in cerebral palsy or another birth injury.
