May 27, 2007: Complete Moisture Plus Solution Recall: Following reports of an increased risk of a serious eye infection, all bottles of the multi-purpose contact lens solution have now been recalled. Complete Moisture Plus lawsuits are being reviewed nationwide. | |
Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. has announced a Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution recall of nearly 3 million bottles. The recall was initiated because of a bacterial contamination which could lead to a serious eye injury.
>>UPDATE 5/25/2007: Complete Moisture Plus linked to serious eye infections
A contact lens solution bacterial contamination may compromise the sterility of the product. This can lead to eye infections and microbial keratitis. Any contact lens users who have the recalled Complete MoisturePLUS solution, should discontinue use and contact their doctor if they develope any signs of an eye infection.
Eye infection symptoms may include:
- redness
- pain
- tearing
- increased sensitivity to light
- blurry vision
- discharge
- swelling
Although the recall involves nearly 3 million of the Complete MoisturePLUS 12 ounce bottles and Active Packs, it has been indicated that under 200,000 of these units were shipped within the United States. This would account for only 1% of the Complete MoisturePLUS contact lens solution products distributed in the US on an annual basis. Therefore, the risk of exposure to the contaminated solution is low.
The FDA and Advanced Medical Optics have indicated that there have been no reports of adverse reactions associated with the contact lens solution. However, it is not uncommon for serious complications to be reported weeks or months after the official announcement of a product recall.
