FDA Letter: Complete Moisture Plus could cause Acanthamoeba Keratitis

Yesterday the FDA issued letters to healthcare providers and contact lens wearers notifying them that the Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics, could cause Acanthamoeba Keratitis.  The serious eye infection is painful and may result in permanent vision loss.

>>INFORMATION: Acanthamoeba keratitis eye infections

The Public Health Notifications were issued by the FDA to provide more information about the recent increase in reported cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis among those who wear soft contact lenses and use Complete MoisturePlus multi-purpose solution.  Last week it was announced that an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the otherwise rare eye infection is 7 times more likely to occur in people who use Complete MoisturePlus solution.  This led to a nationwide Complete Moisture Plus recall.

ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS INFECTIONS

The eye infections are caused by a free living amoeba (known as Acanthamoeba) which is commonly found in tap water, swimming pools, soil, sewage systems, cooling towers and air conditioning systems.  When the parasite infects the eye it could cause the victim to go blind or require a corneal transplant (surgical procedure to replace the outer covering of the eye).

The FDA warning letter recommends that contact lens wearers stop using Complete Moisture Plus solution, replace the actual lenses and storage cases and consult with their eye doctor to choose an appropriate alternative product to clean and disinfect their lenses.  The information was sent directly to healthcare providers, as it is very important that symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratits are recognized as soon as possible, since early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment.  Acanthamoeba keratitis symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Excessive tearing
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Feeling that something is in the eye

  1. Priscilla Pettrey Says:

I had been using Complete moisture care for a little over 8 mos and then in January I started developing “eye issues”. I ended up in the Er on February 5, 2007 because I could not see, my eyes were extremely sensitive and my eyes were almost swollen shut, it was extremely, extremely painful!! It hurt to even open my eyes at all. The nurse practitioner at the ER diagnosed me with bacterial conjunctivitis. I had corneal scratches, etc. I was sent home with a prescription. After two weeks of eye drops and wearing glasses, my eyes cleared up. I again resumed wearing contact lenses and using the same solution my eyes continued the same thing. My eye doctor said that it wasn’ t bacterial, etc and tried a different avenue. I discontinued contact lenses and wore glasses. I tried his medication but again my eyes got better. Then I was cleared to wear my contact lenses again and my eyes started again. I went back to my eye doctor and he stated he didn’t know what else could be my eye problems and just continue the same prescription and not wear glasses.

I decided to go for a second opinion, This eye doctor diagnosed me with GCD and also keratitis of the cornea, so he gave me two drops. After a follow up visit with him
