Rocephin injection could cause fatal reaction
An FDA Alert has been issued regarding updates to the label for Rocephin, an antibiotic injection. A potentially fatal reaction could result for individuals of all ages if the injection is administered together with calcium containing products.
A prior warning issued in May 2007 indicated that combining Rocephin and calcium or calcium-containing products could cause a fatal reaction in the lungs and kidneys of new born babies. Therefore, the FDA advised that the antibiotic injection should not be given to hyperbilirubinemic newborns, especially premature babies.

While there have only been reports of deaths involving babies, the FDA indicates that the potential for this interaction exists in people of all ages. Fatalities have been associated with the administration of calcium and Rocephin simultaneously, as well as at different times via different infusion lines.
Rocephin (ceftriaxone sodium) is an antibiotic injection manufactured by Roche Holding AG. The new Rocephin warning indicates that the antibiotic injection should not be mixed with calcium or administered within 48 hours of a calcium containing product.
If you, a friend or loved one suffered a fatal reaction in the lungs or kidneys after receiving an antibiotic injection, the problems could have been caused by a combination of Rocephin and calcium. To review your legal rights, request a free consultation.
