Nursing home statistics show fewer seniors living in facilities

Carl Saiontz

The latest Census data released by the U.S. government indicates that fewer seniors are living in nursing homes. There has been a steady decline in the percentage of elderly who require nursing home care since 1990, as many are opting for in-home care or assisted-living facilities.  However, as 79 million baby boomers enter their 60s, these nursing home statistics could change over the next twenty years.

In 1985, 21% of people over the age of 85 and 10.2% over those over 75 lived in nursing homes.   Last year’s census data indicates that the number has dropped to less than 16% for those over 85 and 7.4% for those 75 and older.

With many nursing homes throughout the country plagued by poor care and reports of abuse and neglect, many families are taking steps to avoid putting their loved ones in a facility.  At-home care and community based service options have allowed many elderly to remain independent longer.  In addition, assisted living facilities have grown in popularity over the past decade.  These nursing home statistics do not account for those living in these facilities, since there is no federal definition for assisted living.

While the percentage of elderly living in nursing homes has dropped, the actual number of Americans who require nursing home care could increase in coming years.  Current estimates indicate over 1.8 million people live in a nursing home.  By 2030, the number of Americans over the age of 65 is expected to reach about 71 million, which is nearly twice the current number.  This could put significant strains on nursing homes, which must work to increase the number of beds available and improve the quality of care rendered to our nation’s elderly.
