UPDATE AUGUST 2010: New Seroquel cases are no longer being reviewed or accepted by Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. This post is from 2007, and is provided for informational purposes only.

Since early 2006, the lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. have been representing individuals diagnosed with diabetes, pancreatitis and other side effects of Seroquel. While the legal claims are moving through the court systems nationwide, new Seroquel lawsuits are still being reviewed and investigated.

>>INFORMATION: Seroquel Lawsuits

Seroquel, known generically as quetiapine fumarate, is manufactured by AstraZeneca. The medication is approved for treatment of schizophrenia, but it is often prescribed “off-label” for other uses including anxiety, dementia, obsessive compulsive disorders and autism. Seroquel side effects have been linked to an increased risk of diabetes and severe weight gain, which have led to serious medical complications for thousands of people.

It is part of a newer class of medications often referred to as an “atypical antipsychotic.” Zyprexa, another atypical antipsychotic manufactured by Eli Lilly, was tied to a similar risk and the manufacturer has agreed to pay over $1.2 billion to settle Zyprexa lawsuits for over 28,500 people.

>>PRIOR POST (1/8/2007): Zyprexa settlement

The first Seroquel lawsuits are expected to begin by Fall 2008 in several states. Thousands of pages of documents have been reviewed as part of the Seroquel litigation and depositions of many company witnesses have already been taken. The evidence is overwhelming that AstraZenica knew about the risk of Seraquel side effects, yet continued to heavily market their drug without proper warnings.

Seroquel is one of the best selling drugs for AstraZeneca, with sales of over $3 billion per year worldwide. As recently as November 2006, the FDA expressed concerns to AstraZeneca that some of their marketing materials were “false and misleading.” The federal drug regulators indicated that the company was improperly attempting to minimize the seroquel diabetes side effects and failed to adequately discuss the risk of serious muscular conditions, such as tardive dyskinesia, which could result from the drug.

AstraZeneca has heavily marketed the drug for “off-label” uses which are beyond what was approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment. Some experts have estimated that as much as 70% of all Seroquel prescriptions were “off-label” for unapproved uses. This has exposed people to the risk of Seroquel side effects such as diabetes, when they may not have received the drug if they had been properly warned of the dangers.

SEROQUEL LAWSUITS

The Seroquel lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are continuing to review and investigate new claims for individuals who have taken Seroquel and suffered:

  • Diabetes
  • Pancreatitis
  • Tardive Dyskinesia
  • Death

If you, a friend or family member have experienced any of these Seroquel problems, request a free consultation and claim evaluation.

I took seroquel for a while and the whole time I felt worse than I did to start I couldnt eat half the time and the other time I was just plain vomiting all the time I gained a lot of weight and either went from one extreme to the next no sleep or all sleep… It makes me wonder are all medications eventually bad what is really safe anymore.

I have been taking Seroquel for the past five (5) years. My current dose is 50mg/AM and 400mg/PM.
I noticed movement problems withing 6 months of being on the medication. I reported what I can best describe as body fluttering. I also reported that my scalp moves frequently. My reports were always attributed to some other ailment. The movement problems have become worse. At first is was the right side of my body–jerking limbs and difficulty grasping with my hand. I thought I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. Overtime, the body jerking now affects my entire body. Determined to obtain a diagnosis, I carefully reviwed the side effects of all of my medications. This review lead me to Seroquel. I am relieved about Parkinson’s even though I am not comfortable with Tardia…
I am do not want to discontinue the Seroquel do to its effectiveness. My pronosis is ????able

Yes, I do believe they have the right to defend themselves but come on!!! the little people gets screwed again. It is not like the money we are going to get is going to make us rich and go buy a hacienda somewhere and retire. If we could we probabaly will not enjoy the little fruits anyway. My best friend and life partner had taken Seroquel since late 2005. He had adverse reactions to this drug. It was to be used as an antipsychotic for his bipolar depression, but it made him psychotic to the point of him running out into a three lane highway and not knowing what he was doing. Police had to be called to retrieve him and get him back into the apartment. This was reported to his caregiver. she did nothing. He continued to take the drug. On August 26, 2009, he drowned himself in the Ohio River because this drug caused him to be psychotic and have suidical thoughts and tendencies. His body was recovered on August 29, 2009. There is no legal action/recourse available to me since we are a gay couple. I lost my best friend, my life partner and my love due to the negligence of a medical official who would not listen to reason.

I started taking seroquel in August 2004. In December 2004 I had my yearly phsyical . I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I had gained 30 pounds. I later developed bleeding behind my eyes and was prescribed metformin. I then lost so much weight I could no longer wear any of my clothes. I went from one extreme to the other. I hate going out with friends and see them eat whatever they want and I have to watch every thing I eat so I want lose my eyesight or worse. This is very depressing. I think AstraZeneca should pay all of us for our health problems.I can no longer get life insurance because I am diabetic. It stinks!!!

While I believe there can be side effects with any medication, I also believe that medication is not good OR bad, but good AND bad. Benefits and side effects must both be weighed. I have had zero negative effects with Seroquel, and I have lost about 20 pounds since beginning it in August. I am a Bipolar II patient with severe depression and also take Zoloft and Lamictal. Had I experienced the side effects discussed here from ANY of these medications, I would certainly have discontinued them. Prescribing physicians do not possess the power to make patients take any medication. That lies in our hands. If you feel that the Seroquel is detrimental, STOP TAKING IT!

i’ve been on a moderate dose (125mg) of Seroquel since fall 2006. I particularly checked with my shrink about weight gain – he assured me the max would be a few pounds.
I read the extensive tablet information very carefully and kept a mental note to have regular blood tests and was aware of all of the possible side effects. I have, to date, gained 17 pounds, of which about 9 were only gained over Christmas holidays.
I shall continue to monitor my health carefully.

I always thought I was a upbeat Atype happy person sure I got depressed but nothing drastic and always bounced back lively as ever. following a major car accident I had severe PTSD. bouts of major depression followed by major highs. during one of the worst depressions that lasted 3 months I went to my family Dr. after many questions and a paper questioniare she told me I was bi-polar at the age of 54 so off to the psych Dr she confirmed it and put me on seroquel. I gained 40lbs.in 6 months, became pre diabetic, had HIGH blood pressure, and was a zombie. the dr added lamictal which helped me feel more upbeat. I cut the seroquel from 200mg+ back to 50mg at bedtime only and the dr. added topamax, the weight has come off, my blood sugar is way down, as is my blood pressure. the lamictal is causing me hair loss, and saggy old lady skin. I do not understand how a person becomes bipolar at my age.when I went to the psych. dr. after 30 mins of talking she started writing a scrip of seroquel and handed me office samples, just like that. I believe they get a kick back on the drug.its going on 3 years now and I have forgotten the real me. I want to go to rehab and get off all the mind altering drugs. I am either down and blah or up and irritable but refuse to take any more seroquel

I was on seroguel for almost 3 years at 800 mg, I now have type 2 diabetes, serious eye problems, memory loss, and other garbage all caused by this drug. I was taken to the ER in 2009 and almost died after my dosage was upped again. I will not mention any names, but a pharmacologist that happened to be there told me flat out it was because of this med….. every symptom I was exhibiting was on their rare side effect list, I later found out that the rare side effects seem to be more common than the others they list. I’m off of it now, but thanks to this company my life will be impacted from now on thanks to this companies nonchalant attitude towards all of us suffering from their greed. I hope someone “screws” this company just like they did us.

My boyfriend of 19 years had been on seroquel for 7 – 9 months when he was diagnoised with diabeties, thyroid problems, pituitary problems, jurking arms and legs, memory issues, which cause lots of fights between us, and dizziness. To this day he is still on the medication for his bipolar and sleep issuse. His anger grows with his memory issues and the jurking arms and legs. It just rediculious that Dr.’s refuse to see what this medication is doing to people and give them something else. I do believe Dr.’s must get a big kick back for giving this med. And eye issuses with blurry vision.

i have been on seroquel for five years now, they diagnosed me as bipolar one time in 1978, was prescribed seroquel by a counselor at a mental health clinic, etc., and now have diabetes, no one in my family is a diabetic. I truly believe that they put a label on me when i was in the hospital in 1978, they had to diagnose me with something, and actually i was just depressed because my daughter, age 13, then, was missing for a week. now wouldn’t that make anyone depressed, any good mother. they put me in the local hospital and said that i should take a rest. well, i have been well since, never took any medication that they prescribed for me, i got well by myself, then, i went to see someone at the mental health clinic and said that i couldn’t sleep, so, she looked up my records, saw that it said “bi-polar” and she prescribed seroquel for me. started out at 25 mg. each night for sleep, and now 50mg. now each night for sleep. In june, i was diagnosed with dibetes and you know that was not a good diagnosis. I will tell you that I am going to get off this seroquel by myself, and go to bed at night, not taking any more of this medication. And………………..just to let you know, i only see the phycologist once a year, in order to get my seroquel prescribed for another year. Yes, just once a year is all I am required to see her. she says, how are you, i say I am fine and she writes the script. Well, i am too smart to take this any longer, and no oversized lady sitting in a dark office at a mental health clinic is going to control my life with seroquel. I will be writing two letters, one to her and one to my physician and let them know how i feel about the medication that she prescribed for me.

I was put on seroquel in the last 4 years first 200mg. then up to 400mg. then up to 600mg I was taking everynight at bed time. I gained a ton of weight and became a diabetic and also my liver is messed up and my pancreas. Now I hve to test my sugar 3 times a day and take klor kon for my potassium and also I need to keep getting testing done for my liver and pancreas. Let alone I never once was tested every few months to see if I was doing ok my doctor kept upping the doses. Now look I have to worry about my liver my pancreas and test my sugar EVERYDAY!!!! Thanks alot to the doctor that kept upping it and not testing me. And also the seroquel itself!

I have been on 600=800MG of Seroquel for 10 years. It made me gain over 100 pounds, and now I have full blown severe Diabetes. I had insurance to pay for my prescriptions most of the time, but when my wife Got laid off I lost my perscription coverage, and my doctor gave me shopping bags full of the drug samples which were given to her in little sample bottles. When she could no longer provide me with the regular Seroquel samples, she put me on the XR (extended release) samples, which left me feeling tired all day long, and soon after is when my Diabetes developed. I too have to test my blood 4 or 5 times a day, and I have become repeatedly very sick when my sugar gets over 400. I have been ruined by this drug, I have severe sleep problems, my mental problems are worse, and now this.

As of now I do not take seroquel because of many reasons like the rapid weight gain and sugar level high, the sickness when trying to get off the medicine and its got a withdralw that is unlike any other. But to let my story be passed i was under age probably 15 or 16 years old when prescribed. The doctor put me on seroquel. first day 25mg,2nd day 50mg, 3rd day 75mg and by the end of the month was at 100mg. couple months later was raised to 400 mg. then up to a 800mg in only 5 months of being prescribed. then the doctor raised me more and before you knew it i was taking one 300 mg as of morning and 1200mgs at night. i regret ever having to take this medication. its caused me a whole lot of problems. plus the dotor which that prescribed me this medicine took a flight off to china before noone ever caught it and never returned. aint that something. i dont even enjoy life after gaining over 80 pounds and unable to sleep as well. what about the fact im a diabetic now and having to do wit sugar testing everyday and a diet. i am praying that justice will be served for all us who has suffered from this medication. this medication has even turned me against trying to get help and other doctors and medicine. so please noone take that medicine

My wonderful wife Renee passed away suddenly May 5th, 2011 at age 44. The preliminary cause was due to a massive heart attack, but a toxicology report is pending. She was prescribed Seroquel about 1 1/2 years ago for depression and anxiety. After going through an unnecessary cholecystectomy for severe nausea, she was diagnosed with IBS 2 years ago. Through the nausea which caused near constant vomiting, her dental health seriously declined and she had most of her teeth pulled. This obviously had an effect on her, from not feeling as attractive to the inability to eat most foods since it took almost a full year before she healed enough to wear dentures. This had much to do with her depression.

Her physician believed the IBS was caused and worsened by anxiety and depression, therefore prescribed Seroquel. This horrible drug had a drastic effect on her. Before taking it, she was always very ambitious, out-going, energetic, cheerful, and loved life. After taking it, quite the opposite was true. Side effects were prolonged sleeping (usually between 12 to 18 hours a day), no ambition or energy, worsened nausea, irritability, worsened depression, hot and cold flashes, dry-mouth, weight gain (from 100 up to 145 lbs.), dizziness, constipation/diarrhea (these symptoms would constantly go back and forth), abdominal, chest, and back pains, vision problems, decreased appetite, and difficulty breathing (labored breathing and hyperventilating occasionally). She explained these to her physician and wished to change medications, but he never did. Seroquel obviously made her condition worse and changed her into a different person. She suffered quite a bit over the past 2 years. After explaining this to the coroner, he decided to do blood/toxicology testing afterwards. I am expecting the results in 6 to 8 weeks.

Her physician had her get lab work on a variety of things, but (to the best of my knowledge) never anything to do with the heart- even after explaining her chest pains to him. Her death could have been avoided if this was done. The coroner said there was a 70% blockage in the main artery going to the heart. This definitely could have been detected in tests and corrective measures could have been taken. If nothing else, her physician should be liable for not changing her medication and not persuing a valid explanation for her chest pains. Astra-Zeneca should be held accountable for producing such a horrible drug- something to supposedly aid depression should not make the depression worse. After some investigating on my part, it is also very possible she had undetected diabetes since many of her symptoms were identical. I also found out that Seroquel has been responsible for inducing diabetes in other patients, which they are in litigation for. Given her physicians lack of attention to her chest pains, I’m sure he did not do any testing for diabetes as well. He would always tell her any symptoms she had was tied to the IBS.

I was taken of Zyprexa in March 2013 after I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes – my doctors response was a typical doctors response “its your diet and try more exercise” in December 2013 I was put on Seroquel, in the past two weeks I have seen excessive weight gain. I asked at the time of being told that Seroquel would help me, if i would get weight gain and was told not as much as Zyprexa.

My exercise regime had changed since April 2013 and I had seen the lost of 4 stone and I was keeping to the regime. I have now seen the gain of 3 stone since going to Seroquel. I cannot live my life on medication anymore – as of right now I am refusing to take it, despite the risk to my mental health.

I live in Ireland and have asked the psychiatrist for counselling instead of medication since Day 1 but so far nothing has been provided to me apart from a promise that it will happen in the medium to long term.

    In Canada, health care is a very public issue until you need it and then it gets very personal. At the point of pain and suffering, ideology is of little comfort. When simple daily tasks like getting dressed, driving to work or just doing your job become painfully unbearable, your priority becomes diagnosis and treatment. Due to my injuries being work injuries, workers compensation became the ONLY avenue for treatment of my injuries. What followed was outright fraud, lies, denials; Due to this I ended up with PTSD: I literally sought help, counseling, I was grabbed, needled, and chemical straight jacketed with 500 mgs of seroquel . Instead of receiving timely diagnosis / timely medical care for my work injuries, I was booted to the curb, In Canada whenever there is significant injury with insurance interests, everything and anything will be used to DENY diagnosis, No Diagnosis = No Claim = No costs = LIFETIME OF PAIN – POVERTY – MISERY; 500 MGS = OVERDOSE;

I have been on Seroquel for over 20 years. I was misdiagnosed as bi-polar and let me tell you. I gained 130 lbs within 4 months of taking the medication and I am still not completely off of it. I finally have doctors whoa re listening to me. I have suffered a great deal. Both my kidneys are not working at 100% and my liver is at stage 3 cirrohisis (and I never was a drinking – other than a social drink maybe once a year). Unbelievable suffering. I take insulin and diabetic medications now, even though they don’t want to label me a diabetic, they say its all because my liver is destroyed thanks to my medication. I have never been one to sue and I truly hope that my liver will one day be able to regenerate itself…. Had I been computer savvy all those years ago and known what this retched drug could truly do, i never would have taken it, especially since i never needed it in the first place 🙁

He was 5’7” tall and approximately 150 lbs. He kept asking his doctor to change his medicine but he didn’t listen. When he passed away from an enlarged heart about a year later he weighed 240 lbs. which, of course, contributed to his health problems and death. For anyone right now who’s doctor is recommending Seroquel for XYZ say no to this drug! Really if you have a hard time with your weight. It does say oh these are the side effects and you may or may not get them, oh you will get every single one of them even if you’re completely healthy! I weighed 100 pounds they gave it to me for sleep only off lable, it didn’t happen overnight where I went from 100 to 150 it happened over a couple of years and then I stopped taking it I just said no more! After reading all my issues right unfer it’s side effects! Omg I didn’t care if I didn’t sleep for five days. This is the most horrific drug it should just be taken off the market it’s not a good antipsychotic either! I went back to my regular anxiety medication and sleep medication which is clonazepam which is completely safe didn’t do any of that stuff to me! I mean it affected my pupils, sweating, weight ext! I can’t i’ll begin to describe all of the other stuff the vomiting the sickness. I mean just look at the side effects from this med. It’s awful! No doctor told me nobody told me! I had to look it up and when I saw that I was like no more there was no tapering off I didn’t care what the withdrawal was! I’m done. I just read somebody’s comment saying I was just put on it I just lost 40 pounds well good luck with that because it’s gonna come right back on and then you’re going to gain 5 times that. Seriously! It wont go away until you stop not an easy drug to just stop. This is a true warning. No more lawsuits! If you take it and you experience awful stuff tough, you dont even have to change your eating habits during the day you’re gonna not be hungry at all until you take the Seroquel and then you’re going to want to eat every single thing in the house. It is disgusting. I’m finally getting my regular appetite back and my regular energy back. Things can be reversed and I am hoping the eye pupil dilating stuff can be resolved because that’s been one of the worst things and the sweating oh my gosh! I’ve never been a sweater and then it started affecting my skin because of it just don’t take it that’s my advice to everybody say no say nope this is why! Show the list of 20 or more awful side effects. tell your PC or physician to choose something safer.

About 4 years ago my new doctor prescribed me Seroquel. Upon becoming a new patient she did a physical that involved testing my blood sugar which was normal but that was the only time she tested it. I know lawsuits are over against the company but is she legally responsible for causing this? This lead to me losing my job and becoming homeless because my health put me at risk for myself and a risk to the company.. also affecting my child who was 3 at the time. He now has anxiety over his mother dying due to this huge health change . My quality of life has declined immensely and will undoubtedly cause me an early death which will also affect my son as I am his only parent.
