Stryker Corp., which manufactures hip replacement parts, received a warning letter from the FDA about recurring problems with some of their Trident Hip Implant and other components. Manufacturing defects could result in pain, bone fractures or other serious hip replacement problems which may require further surgery. Despite reports received by the company over the past three years, they have not adequately corrected manufacturing problems and have continued to sell hip replacement parts which may fail.

>>FDA Warning Letter: Striker Trident Hip Implant Manufacturing Defects

The FDA released the warning letter on their website this week, but it was sent to the company on November 28, 2007. The FDA’s investigation of a Stryker plant in New Jersey found that manufacturing problems and poor quality control have resulted in potentially defective hip implant and hip replacement parts being sold nationwide. According to the FDA letter, the company received complaints about their Tident Hip Implant parts and other hip replacement components between January 2005 and April 2007, yet they have not adequately addressed the problems

The defective hip replacement parts with ceramic bearing components could produce squeaking noises, resulting in pain and discomfort. Reports also indicate that some of the Trident Hemispherical and Trident PSL cups have failed to function properly and hip implant components have been found to have poor fixation, which could result in serious bone fractures. In some cases, individuals who received the hip replacements required a second surgery due to implant failures.

According to the FDA letter, the following medical products which are manufactured by Stryker at their New Jersey plant could contain manufacturing defects due to the poor procedures in place to prevent nonconforming products and other quality problems:

  • Trident PSL Acetabular Shells
  • ReUnion Plasma Spray Humeral Stem
  • Solar Plasma Purefix HA Shoulder Stems
  • Duracon Toatal Knee Modular Femoral Component
  • Global Modular Hip Stems
  • Trident PSL HA Solid Black 52 MM
  • Trident Hemispherical Cluster 50 MM
  • Hip Implant components with ceramic bearing components

STRYKER TRIDENT HIP IMPLANT LAWSUITS

The product liability lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential hip replacement lawsuits for individuals who suffered an injury as a result of defective Stryker Trident Hip Implant components. Despite knowledge of potential defects in their product, they failed to take actions which could have prevented serious and permanent injuries for some of their customers. If you, a friend or family member have suffered a serious injury, fracture or additional surgery as a result of a hip replacement problems, request a free consultation.

I recieved total right hip replacement with a stryker hip in Oct. of 2004. Since then Ive had a squeeking noise when I get up and down from sitting and is still painfull. I went to my surgeon and he informed me he has had several complaints about the same problem , but I havent heard anything else about it. I’m very concerned and worried. The 1st surgery was very traumatising to me and I will not have another surgery.

My boyfriend is 37, and had a hip replaced in November 2004 due to a car accident. He didn’t have insurance, and still doesn’t, so he has never gone back to a doctor to have it checked out. just this past april/may 09, it’s started to be extrememly painful for him. and now in the last two weeks, it’s like a stabbing pain, he can’t sleep, and when he walks it CLICKS very loudly. 🙁 . Could this be a defective product? is this normal wear and tear?

I had a hip replacement on 07/11/08 and it almost took my life.
I ended up with a terrible infection, unbelieveable pain, fevers, very low blood pressure and clicking noises. I ended up in a fetal position and wasn’t able to walk anymore. The Doctor that I had was the worse Doctor ithat I have ever seen in my life. I went to another Doctor for a second opinion and had to end up having a second surgery. I am better than I was, but I still have a hard time walking, I still experience pain and my life will never be the same again. Please do your reasearch before having it done.

I have had both hips replaced. The right hip was replaced 3-21-2008 and the left hip was replaced 11-21-08. My right hit started making popping noises in June 2009. Of course I went back too my surgeon, he took xrays and said it looked ok. It was just legements popping over the hip joint. Now when I walk I squeak. I sound like a rusty old door. The sad thing is that I was off work for over 5 months last year and although I had insurance I still had to pay my deductable. The savings we did have are about gone and the possibiliyty of having another surgery will devaste my family. Has anyone else been faced with these problems?303

I was wondering if anyone else having pain w/stryker ceramic ball was told to have surgery because it was their muscle/tendon & the doctor would have to cut the tendon, “but as long as I am in there I’ll replace the ball also”. He seemed to imply that if I just had the ball replaced I would not get any relief. He was a second opinion Dr. & now I am very confused bercause the first Dr. said stripe wear on the ceramic ball causes problems & I would need revision of ball. No mention of cutting the tendon. I’m sick of pain pills.

I had my left hip replaced 4-23-08 and it was made by Stryker. I have been in horrible pain since the surgery. I can not walk very far because of the pain, also difficult to get in my pickup. It feels like my hip is tearing inside. I need a cane full time to get around now. I have been back to the Dr. that put it in and they say the xray looks fine. I have been using a cane ever since and sick of the pain meds just to get though the day. Thanks Stryker for your wonderful implant, so much for the job I can’t go back and do any more. The best part is that I requested my medical records with the serial numbers of the implant, and they will not suppy that. So I wonder what they are hiding.

I had a hip replacement on 6/28/07 I still am in pain . The pain run down my leg and I just cant walk without limping. I have been back to the doctor and he says it is bursitis. This surgery has ruined my life. I have a stryker but not sure what type. How can I find out.

Posted on October 5, 2009 at 11:58 am

  • Tina says:

To find out any information about your surgery.. check with medical records at the hospital where you had the surgery (s) to get the serial numbers or any other information. Stryker nor the doctor will give it to you. They are afraid of a suit..
The Doctor’s will tell you everyhting looks fine.. because they can’t tell by taking an x ray. If things don’t get better.. plz get a second opinion.. of course they are going to tell you that they will need to do a revision surgery to see what’s going on.. and there is no gaurentee.
it’s like dam if you do.. and dam if you don’t. I wish I wouldn’t have.

    Good luck!

The pain can get to me later in the day to the point I have to sit down. I have complained to the surgeon, to no avail. His comment “we can always do another one”. I have seen 2 other surgeons, who say about the same thing. I get a lot of walking done while I can, but after 5 years, I still am in pain.

I had both my hip replaced first the right one which went well with no pain after. Then I had my left one done, one month after I started getting pain and cracking that increased. I had pain in the groin area as well as the front part of the leg and serious weakness til i could no longer walk on the left leg. Xray after xray and test after test finally 8 months later the xray showed the top part of the prosthesis was rotated out of place and had never adhered to the bone. I got it redone and it took but I still have alot of pain from the damage done by the 1st prosthesis groin pain and front leg pain when I walk from damaged muscles and nerves.

I complained of hip pain in the Army for three years. They always said nothing was wrong. Then for the next 13 years continued to complain to civilian doctors being told nothing was wrong and the pain was in my head until one doctor finally said I needed a hip replacement. I had a total left hip replaced with a Stryker Trident and now have severe pain again. Pain down the front of my femur and in my hip. It shows up on some x-rays as loose screws but on the military hospital’s bone scan as normal. I know something is wrong and the doctor who did the surgery’s secretary tells me that they didn’t even know there was a recall on Stryker at all. They are unable to help me find out if it is my hip that is recalled and the doctor doesn’t take the insurance I have now. I have been told by a doctor that I have been dealt a bad hand in life and to deal with it. The VA hospital says there is nothing they can do for me.

I have been an athlete all my life. Running and cycling and lifting heavy weights. I had a stryker hip replacement in 2007 and have been in pain since. I know that I can no longer run, but it is extremely painful to even walk. Been back to see my surgeon at least five times, and he always says things look good. He can’t explain my pain. My wife and I went for a 3.5 mile walk yesterday, and it was so painful to get out of bed, pain in that hip and shooting down my leg, I refuse to take pain meds for it. It has ruined my life. I love the outdoors and cannot enjoy it anymore. Getting a second opinion.

I had hip replacement surgery June 2009. I still have all the same pain as before the surgery, plus now I have back pain. After sitting more than 20 mins, I have to get up and walk because it is too painful to sit. I also have a limp that people have commented on. It is a Stryker Trident. I am still going from doctor to doctor for pain relief.

Had right hip replacement 6 years ago. NEVER right! To be honest, also have spinal stenosis for many years…it is progressive. Nonetheless, my hip has never felt healed. As in the previous comments, the surgeon takes a yearly xray and says it looks great. But, walking is painful, and going a long way is impossible. A retired orthopedic surgeon had occasion to look at recent xrays. His opinion is that the prosthesis utilized was too long, making me even more lop-sided! My replacement was Stryker, but I’m not really sure it’s the issue, tho it may be. All I want is to put on my underpants without falling over! No luck so far!

I have had four surgeries since my stryker left hip replacement in 2007. I had a bad staph infection and had it scraped out, a temporary put in and then another permanent one. I will always have a limp now. I have not worked since 2007 and every summer and winter except this past summer, I have been on a pick line with an IV. I am still on oral antibiotics and now have a yeast infection whick makes me too embarrassed to go swimming in a two piece bathing suit. Forget the 20= inch scar! Also xrays shoed from the first surgery and scraping, a piece of bone broke off the pelvis and the joint slips at times now.

My hip was replaced in 2007. Was a very rough surgery for me. I am a larger man and my recovery was long. I am a sanitation worker and on my feet all day. I suffer daily with hip and leg pain. Was told by my surgeon that I have signs of loosening and wear around the cup. I have been doing alot of research and found out that I do have a Trident by stryker. Amazing right? Although my surgeon told me that it wasn’t part of the recall. I have called stryker directly and they are going to start an investigation into my case. Funny I requested my operative records over a month ago from the Hospital and still haven’t gotten them. I wonder if someone is hiding something?

June 28,2002, I had a Stryker Trident 58 left total hip arthroplasty. It is painful to stand up and most time when walking. I returned to my orthopedic surg. only to be told it looked good to him. Shortly afterward he retired. I then went to another orthopod for the pain only to be told he wasn’t familiar with this replacement, but the xray indicated it was ok. I have my surgical report from the hospital and don’t know what todo or how to be pain free like my right hip replacement from 1998 with no problems.

On May 27, 2010 I had total hip replacement. Pain was constant and I had difficulty walking . It never went away. On May 1st of this year, 2011, the surgery had to be redone because the hip had become severely septic. The components implanted in 2010 were the TRIDENT PSL 52-mm with 0 degree polyethylene insert, Accolade size 3, 127 degree stem, and 32-mm minus 4 ball. The surgeon said that it was not a DePuy. The same metal components were used for the second surgery. Does anyone out there know if the parts used were defective ones?

He said he would and end result is not the right leg is too long. It has been three years since my hip replacement and in May of this year I started getting pain back in my hip like I did before he replacement. Now I can’t sit for more than 30 minutes and it hurts like hell when I get up and feels like he hip is out of socket. I went to see Doctor in April and he said exrays looked just fine. Now my pelvis is twisted causing pain in my left sacroiliac. The pain seems to get worse daily. I don’t have insurance to go get another opinion. Frustrated!!!

I had a my left hip replaced in Aug 2008. The implant was a Stryker Trident Ceramic Acetabular System. Less than 8 months later, I began expriencing excruciating pain when standing up and while walking. After some x-rays with dye contrast media, it was discovered that my iliopsoas tendon was dragging across the metal edge of the bearing cup. I requied a “revision”.
I also had my right knee replaced in Oct 2009. My knee recovery has gone well. I am pleased with my new knee joint (Also a Stryker.)
In June 2011, I had the hip implant removed and replaced with a Stryker Mobile Bearing Hip replacement. This implant was specifically designed to reduce the possibility of the iliopsoas tendon being irritated by contact with the cup.
I asked for, and was given the bearing that was removed. On the edge of the metal cup, it is deformed due to metal-to-metal contact with the stem of the femoral implant. It has a sharp edge, which is clearly the point where my tendon was dragging across it.
During the “Revision” surgery, at least one muscle was torn loose from its attachment to my pelvis. This resulted in an extended recovery time, as I was instructed not to place weight on my left leg for 6 weeks following the surgery.
It has now been about 8 months since the “Revision”, and I am still experiencing pain and discomfort in my left hip and lower back. I am no longer taking prescription pain medications, but I am taking aspirin 4 times a day which helps a little with my lower back pain. I still require the use of a cane for walks longer than about a block.
I can only hope that I will heal and stop hurting.

I had a Trident type hip replacement in 2002 at 35 years old, and have been in pain ever since. It has dislocated while I was sleeping or sitting multiple times since, and I always have to be hospitalized to have it put back in the joint. It aches constantly, and I have had chronic pain and had mobility problems. Having this surgery was NOT the relief I thought it was going to be! I now cannot work, and worry constantly about living alone and having a dislocation leave me immobile and in extreme pain until someone finds me. Im only 45 years old and I feel so old.

Told to exercise , went to another surgeon he took xrays said I have a loose acetabular (cup). I had a revision on march 16 2012. Surgeon noted in operative report after screws were removed from cup he removed the cup by hand . No bone growth to cup . Also noted in report was impingement between the femoral neck and the posterior acetabulum.( Components where rubbing when I walked) surgeons had to remove titanium staining from tissue. I feel a lot better now. Need to wear a leg brace for 2 months all the time ,and just touch the ball of my foot when I walk with crutches .

I was in extream pain and needed a second opinion! Im due to have surgery this october 2012.. I had a stryker by omni fit titanium. Im not able to enjoy life or do anything I use to do. This is NOT living! I was 54 when I had the surgery and now 56. I feel like Im 86! The new dr didnt want to do exploratory surgery due to the fact I could get an infection. But I really feel there is a broken screw or something! I really hope after this surgergy I will feel like my old self again.

Sept 2008 had right total hip replacement and was fine for about 4 years, but when I bumped the right hip area, it swelled up and I developed a subdermal hematoma and instead of getting the implants removed, I chose a wound care center, now after almost 1 year I have an infection and my surgeon wants the take out the implants, install spacers and when infection is gone, then put in new hardware. I wonder if anyone has experienced this repeat surgery and how are you doing now? If you want to contact me, send me an e-mail about your experience.

I feel for everyone who has posted their story. I had both of my hips replaced in 2009 and 2010. I have not been the same since. I even told the doctor that I was ready to cut it out myself. Anything would be better than the pain and depression we all ARE left with. My question is if you had a hip replacement and no one would listen to you about the problems; are you still able to file a lawsuit due to the statute of limitaitions? We are not experts. Who are we to disagree with the professionals? I have seen 3 specialists and they all said that they could not find anything wrong in the x-rays. The sadest thing is that not only is the quality of our lives have changed…so has that of our families. I was married in 2006 and in 2008 is when I found out that they needed to be replaced. My husband and I have not had physical relations since then:(

Had (left) total hip replacement 21/2 yrs ago.(May ’11). Pain worsened DAILY since surgery. Only able to hobble around w/ cane. Dr took x-ray, found nothing wrong. He said sorry things didn’t work out. Tried to get 2nd opinion but every dr declined; only suggesting I go back to dr who did surgery. I wouldn’t. Received letter from hiim June ’13, that Stryker Hip was recalled. Had to wait till now to get tests done due to “”out of pocket” expenses. Have been diagnosed w/. infection & still have 2 tests to go. Am very concerned about more results & outcome of this. Called Mayo Clinic & was referred to dr in Tampa, Fl. who will see me. I live 7 hrs away, in Ga, but will gladly wait to see him next Feb ’14. Have been advised I will never walk unassisted again. Very, very angry & in constant excruciating pain. if you have Stryker Hip, go 1st to a lawyer (you’ll need 1), then to a dr. ASAP!. Best wishes to all!!

I see the last post was from 2013. I had a stryker hip put in July 2007. I couldn’t afford to have my other hip done. My husband had to refi our house to get the money to do the first one. For the next 6 years I walked around on crutches because my other hip couldn’t be fixed. Finally, in Oct. of 2013, I got an inheritance and went to Costa Rica to get my second hip done. In January of 2014 I made it off my crutches. I was starting to cut back on my pain meds. Then, May 1, 2014, pulling a weed out in my yard, I dislocated the first thr. My surgeon looked at the xrays and said “I don’t see anything wrong”. So he sent me home and told me to be careful. Things were going good until August 1, 2014. I bent over to wipe something up off the floor and DISLOCATED THE HIP AGAIN ! Surgeon looked at the xrays and could see nothing wrong. He knows I have no insurance so now I am just trying to be careful again. He told me that if I get insurance he could “go in there and make sure it doesn’t dislocate again”. Like the rest of the people commenting here I have gone through years of hell, thinking after each hospital visit that I would finally be able to walk again and be a functioning member of society. Well, 7 years later I am still in pain and NOT able to function enough to get a job. And like Sheri not able to have any relations with my husband. I guess I need to find a lawyer. I know that I wasn’t told that there might be a possibility that I couldn’t walk after my hip replacements. I did see something that said you could still have some pain. I could deal with that if I thought I would be able to at least WALK unattended. After 7 years your hip shouldn’t just dislocate doing something as simple as pulling a weed.

Paul regarding your Doctors hesitant to say anything negative about the Stryker Trident device that they had recommended to you, Are you aware that the surgeons that did the operation and hospital administrator were being paid under the table (wink wink ) by Stryker to use there product. Stryker eventually paid to the government 311 million dollars to stop this practice.. They were put under watch for 18 months to avoid prosecution. What a slap on the wrist that was boo hoo. I have the same device as you I lost my business and still can’t work. Up till now I have lost 1 million dollars in income.

I’ve had a trident total hip replacement August, 2012. My limp is getting worse and has a slight grinding feeling. I’m worried about what might happen in the future. I had 3 follow up checkups right after. After that I was told see my private doctor. He was a little perplexed, he’s never dealt with this before. And that’s not a reassuring outlook for me. That limp is getting much worse. Thank you.

I was implanted with a trident HA PSL acetabular cluster shell on March 26, 2013. This device was removed from the market in 2009 after a MDL law suit on this device.

I currently have a chromium blood level of 1.1 and chromium urine levels of .5 since 2014. I have experienced other unrelated health issues such as double vision, hearing impairment, skin and blood vessel issues.

You obviously have intervened and corrected this malfunction. Could you respond and explain the extent and number of corrections you have made.

I cannot file a claim on this suit as my device was implanted after the settlement date. My attorney for my law suit said I need to find an expert witness to substantiate my claim.

You need to have special blood work done to check for chromium and or cobalt presence.

Metal on Metal wearing of your hip implant will shed metal shavings into your blood system and cause pain and inflamation.

I currently have the same issues as you due to the presence of chromium in my blood. I have filed a lawsuit against Stryker because I was implanted with a trident device in 2013 which was pulled from the market in 2009.

Check to see if your device was one which was creating problems. There were many pulled, not just Stryker implants.

I hope you can resolve your issue. Let me know how you proceed and if I can be of help.
