Search for information about Chantix and suicide yields no results from Pfizer site

Austin Kirk

In today’s information age, consumers turn to the internet to research important concerns in their life. Given the recent reports about an association between Chantix and suicides, many potential users of the anti-smoking drug have likely visited the official site for the medication to determine whether the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior may outweigh the potential benefits provided by the drug. Unfortunately, a search for “suicide” on Chantix.com, the site provided by Pfizer for information about the medication, delivers no results.

SUICIDE AND CHANTIX

Although Pfizer is well aware of the connection between the use of Chantix and suicides, they continue to withhold complete information about “suicide” on their official Chantix website.

In November 2007, the FDA issued an “Early Communication” about an ongoing review of a potential connection between the use of Chantix and suicide. In February 2008, the FDA issued an alert highlighting important changes that were made to the Warnings and Precautions section of the Chantix label and indicated that Pfizer was being required to provide a medication guide for users of the drug, which will outline the possible risk of committing suicide on Chantix.

Earlier this month, Public Citizen, a consumer protection group, urged the FDA to require a “black box” warning about the risk of suicide and Chantix. A black box warning would be the strongest possible warning that can be placed on a prescription medication, which is designed to ensure that users are aware of the potential side effect associated with the drug.
