The Yamaha Rhino was introduced in 2003 as a mix between a utility vehicle and a recreational ATV. It was designed with a high center of gravity on a narrow wheel base, and it contains a powerful engine. These factors combine to make the vehicle especially prone to rollover, even if operated under normal conditions at reasonable speeds.
Shortly after Yamaha began selling the side-by-sides, reports started to come in of the vehicles tipping over. In September 2006, Yamaha acknowledged the problems in a letter to owners about what riders should do if the vehicle starts to tip over. In August 2007, they started offering the free modifications to add doors and other safety features which were supposed to help riders keep their arms and legs in the vehicle during a roll over. However, Yamaha has never issued a recall to address these problems and they continue to sell thousands of the inherently unstable vehicles each month.
