Lynn~
Tell your daughter not to give up hope! I KNOW what she is going through. I am 26 years old. I took Yaz for 2 years. I am still trying to find out what my mystery illness is. I have been sick for 43 days - which compared to a life time is only minimal, but in a young woman’s life, seems like eternity. I have had all sorts of test: a swab for Mono and strep throat, HIDA Scan, Cat scan of my abdominal and pelvis, 24 hour urine analysis, a 24 hour holter monitor, a Thyroid ultra sound, blood work, an ECKO cardiogram, an EKG, I've been poked with numerous needles and have visited the ER 3 times in the past month and a half. All the tests have come back normal, all the doctors tell me I am "normal", but I can tell you that I am far from normal. I am an athlete at heart - I LOVE to play volleyball, I went to the gym about 4-6 times a week and did 65 minutes on the Elyptical machine; now I can barely do the dishes or make the bed. I have experienced extreme fatigue, hot flashes, heart palpitations (PVC's), severe headaches, extreme nausea, no appetite, uncontrollable shivers, dizziness, dark circles under my eyes, chest/abdominal pains, etc. I’ve felt like I was going to have a heart attack and I’ve also felt that my sides or my back is going to split open. I have lost 10 lbs in a month and a half and sleep about 10-12 hours a night. I have been to at least 7 doctors. I recently had a HIDA scan and my gall bladder is working at 59%, the "normal" is anything above 30%. I am still looking for my answer. My advice to you is to see a nautralpathic doctor. She is the only one that has given me some sort of answer so far and has given me all-natural supplements to take. After experiencing what "real" medicine (Yaz) can do for you, I am all for the natural way. But, please, don't give up hope! I will be thinking and praying for both you and your daughter during this trial. Be the rock that your daughter needs! This is how I make it from day to day: “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” ~Jeremiah 29:11
...and always remember, you CAN get a second opinion from another doctor.

I started taking Yasmin in 2000 after the birth of my son. For the last five years I have experienced pain and diarrhea after eating. I felt like I was having a hard attack all the time. The doctor's told me I had IBS. I finally went to see a General Surgeon and he sent me for a HIDA scan. My gallbladder was functioning at 15% and I had it removed last week. I just switched my birth control pill to Apri because my insurance is no longer covering Yasmin or Ocella.

I began taking yaz in 2006. About four months later I began having extreme pain to the point where I passed out several times in my right side under my ribs. A year and a half later- with several dr. visits, ER trips and unnerving pain-- I was finally diagnosed with Gall bladder disease. I was not even 20 years old when I had my surgery on 2.29.08.

I was placed on YAZ in 2004/2005. I never had any problems until I began taking Yaz. I ended up with massive adhesions and the mood swings were horrific. I now have gall bladder problems. I don't only believe the manufacturers are liable, but, the physician's who prescribe and support these medicines should be accountable as well.

Lynn,
My name is Ashlee. I took Yazmin starting in december of 2005 I only took it for 3 months before it started making me sick. After I stopped taking it my symptoms went away, but this was only temporary. 4 years later I got pregnant and had severe upper right quadrant pain and was told it was just indigestion and the pain would stop after pregnancy. Two weeks after I had my daughter I was shocked to find out this was not the case. I had gallbladder stones severe pancrititus and an enlarged liver. My gallbladder had to be removed and I wasnt allowed to eat for 8 days. On december 29, 2009 I had and ERCP preformed to remove stones that had slipped into my bile ducts and formed a clog. Later that night I had to be taken back to the hospital again this time not being allowed to eat for 6 days to allow my pancrititus to go away. Talk to your daughters doctors and have them run pancreatic enzime level test of your daughters blood and another ultra sound on her gallbladder to chek for stones. If she does have gallbladder stones let her know that everything will be ok it is a very simple surgery and is not painfull at all. Almost immidatly after having mine removed the pain stopped. Tell her I said best of luck and everything will be ok.

My daughter, 17 was taking YAZ since April 2008 on the advice of her dermatologist for severe acne. In November 2009, she started having upsert stomach and upper right quadrant pain. The pain never goes away, only will vary in intensity depending on what she eats. We have been to 5 doctors since and they cannot figure it out. All the tests come back normal. Have had all blood tests and bowel samples, had endoscopy, colonoscopy, ultra sound, CT Scan, HIDA scan, and gastric emptying. She is scheduled for a lactose test next week and then a possible ERCP, to put a camera into the bile ducts, and possibly snip to open. Besides the pain, she started throwing up every night after dinner. She wasn't bad in the morning, but after lunch at school she would get nauseous, but not throw up. One of the nurses at the HIDA scan suggested she try a low fat diet. That has worked to stop the vomitting and nausea, but the pain is still there. She has also lost 15 pounds in 3 months because of the very limited fat she can eat. She was only 115 pounds and 5'5" to start with. If she eats anything over a very limited fat content, she will get a hot flash come over her, the pain gets worse and she will vomit probably 10 minutes after eating. One gastroenterologist said he believes that something is causing this, but he doesn't know what. The radiologist taking the HIDA scan told her it looked like her problem was the gall bladder, but they did have some inconsistencies taking the test. At first they said they couldn't find the gall bladder. They made her drink water and walk around. Then they finally found it and said the test came back at 69%, but said that was normal. The other doctors all want to say it is psychological or irritable bowel, because the tests don't show anything, but you can see the look on her face when she eats something with a high fat content. You can tell it is coming right back up. She is not making it up. She would give anything to go out with friends and eat pizza or have an ice cream sundae, but now has to take low fat yogurt and sandwiches with no fat mayo and no fat cheese, with low fat turket meat. Her energy levels have dropped and she needs to take a nap after getting home from school. She is a very athletic kid playing varsity field hockey and running in track. In the summer she is an accomplished water skier in competitions and tournaments. I am afraid she is losing alot of her muscle also. If there is any information from doctors who are treating this and are familiar with the problems that YAZ is causing in healthy teen agers, please provide me with any information that you can. We just went to the Primary Care Physician today and got her off the YAZ. I need help---Don't know where else to turn----

I was 17 years old, never had children, healthy weight, and overall perfectly healthy. I took Yaz for one month, then had unbearable stomach pains. After going to the ER twice for IV pain medicine, they did a test and saw that my gallbladder was only functioning 6.8%!!! I had my gallbladder removed two weeks later.

Thank you all for sharing your stories - I am amazed to hear that there are so many of us who have had these problems! I was put on yaz in March 2009 and by May, I was having spells of dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, etc. I went to a cardiologist for an echo and monitor, and long story short, they never found out what was wrong with me. I took myself off of yaz when this was going on because I was convinced that it was the source of my problems. Fast forward to the week before Christmas, and I had to go to the ER after 3 nights of intense abdomen pain. Thankfully the ER doc, after I told him I lost 60lbs last year (completely unrelated), ordered an ultrasound and said I had gallstones. We all chalked it up to the weight loss (apparently rapid weight loss can lead to gallstones) and I'm scheduled for surgery this week. HOWEVER, upon seeing an ad, and now reading your posts, I'm thinking that this pill had something to do with this. I radically changed my diet over the last year and there is no reason i should be having gallbladder problems like this so suddenly. It has to be related because nothing else makes sense.

I saw an ad on TV regarding getting galbladder porblems from taking yaz. i called because i have to get my galbladder removed. I have never had surgery before and I'm scared to death. I had no idea that yaz could do this to me! I have to miss work and I have 2 small children. If this is causing all of these women problems maybe it should be taken off the market to make sure other woman will not have to endure this horrible pain that we all have had. I have asked my GI doctor, OB doctor, ER doctors and regular doctor if i am getting this pain due to the pill and no one who even hint a clue that it could be from it.

I started taking yaz may2009 by july2009 I had severe abdominal pains I even went to my gyno who said it may be my gall bladder she never said it was caused from yaz so I kept taking the pills.the pain got worse and by nov2009 my gall bladder was not working and I needed emergency surgery. If I was aware of this side effect I would never have taken this pill I don't think anyone should I'm only 26yrs old no pill should have this side effect.

I took YAZ for a couple months in the beginning of 2007 when I was 26. I then began to have horrible abdominal pain and nausea. I was miserable for 3 months as I went to doctor to doctor. No one could figure out what was wrong with me.
I was thin, never been pregnant, and had a healthy diet. I told a couple doctors the only thing I had done recently done was switch to YAZ for birth control. They told me it had nothing to do with my pain.
I ran out of vacation time from work since I was spending all my time having medical test after medical test. I had one doctor think it was MS and I was frightened for a week until I got the negative MRI results. I had another doctor think it was my appendix and had a barium enema test which was as horrible as it sounds.
I went to the ER and they did a CT scan and there were no gallstones.
I begged one doctor to help me and she told me she could give me painkillers. I did not want to be painkillers. I wanted to be cured. I started doing acupuncture to deal with the pain. It did help.
I took a personal leave from work so I could focus on finding out what was wrong me. I could not get a medical leave since I had no diagnose.
Finally, the seventh doctor did a HIDA scan and my gallbladder was completely dead and very inflammed. I was so exhausted from this ordeal my surgery recovery was long.
I will never use any birth control pills again.
