UPDATE 8/30/2010: A DePuy ASR hip recall was officially announced on August 26, 2010 involving about 93,000 of the metal hip implants sold.

DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, has removed the DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip implant from the market. While the manufacturer initially maintained that the relatively new device was being discontinued due to slowing sales, they acknowledged last week that a number of patients have experienced higher-than-expected hip failure with the artificial implant.

>>INFORMATION: DePuy ASR Hip Lawsuits

The DePuy ASR hip replacement lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential lawsuits for individuals who received this defectively designed device and experienced hip pain, loosening of the hip implant or other hip problems that may have been caused by the metal-on-metal hip implant.

According to a recent report in the New York Times, a number of orthopedic experts believe that a DePuy ASR hip recall should have been issued earlier, as it appears to have a design flaw that makes it difficult to properly position in traditional hip replacement surgery. The device has been found to fail in some patients within only a few years of surgery, leading to excruciating pain and the need for complex hip replacement surgery.

Hundreds of individuals have reported DePuy ASR hip problems since 2007, with most of the reports involving complications that required replacement of the DePuy hip implant. Symptoms of a DePuy ASR hip failure could include:

  • Unexplained Hip Pain
  • Thigh Pain or Groin Pain
  • Pain with Walking
  • Pain Rising from a Seated Position
  • Pain with Weight Bearing

Had a complete right hip replacement in Oct. 2008 and was happy with the operation until about 6 months later when I again felt the same sensations of excruciating pain in the same area as pre-op. Enquired to my surgeon the same, where he saw me pronto, exclaiming that he was worried about the situation, BUT not telling me YET of the problem and recall of the prosthetic. It was not until further tests (4 in total, that all proved negative) that the go-ahead of re-surgery of the defective cup that proved something amiss. A week and a half later and in pain not only from my hip but my lower right back, my right knee and my neck (from not findind a comfortable position to sleep or lay on) that I am writing this. Are there any more who have gone through this and if so write a small column so this can come to light. I am in the process of legal matters to the manufacturer of this product only !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had 2 total hip replacementsone in Sept. 2006 and one in May 2008, the first one I know was a DePuy hip. Within the last week I have been experiencing thigh pain in the hip that was replaced in Sept 2006 which has prompted me to contact my Orthopedic surgeon for a follow up visit. Guess time will tell if one or both are part of the recall

Had a total hip replacement in Oct. 09. I have had some issues with feeling like something is moving in the area of the replacement but have had xrays and everything looks normal. As I am a letter carrier and have only just returned to my route, which includes alot of stairs, I am now wondering if this defective implant will last long?? I am not ready or can afford to have another surgery so soon!!

I had a DuPuy knee replacement 10/09. Immediate pain in back, hip and knee when I regained consciousness. Cannot fully extend leg; cannot walk down steps properly. Cannot stand or walk any length of time. Lidoderm pain patches have been my best friend. No other prescriptions have worked. I had a manipulation performed to straighten leg; didn’t help at all. Dr. had me stop therapy because it was doing more harm than good. Walk like Chester on Gunsmoke most of the time. Who is responsible for our pain and restrictions, Doctors, hospitals, manufacture? I am ready to sue how about you?

3 years ago, I had a total knee replacement (DePuy18886272677) about a year ago, I started falling. No tripping hazards required, I would be walking across an open floor and fall down. The 1st of July, I fell (3rd time in a week), while walking my dog… the dog had nothing to do with the fall. I was walking on level asphalt at the time. Anyway, either that time or a previous fall I broke my ankle. I finally saw a replacement revision specialist, and he said my falls are most likely caused by the knee failing and causing balance instability.

Now not only have I had to endure this broken ankle for 6 months, I had to have surgery on it and have a screw put in to pull things together… I also have to have my knee revised and get to wait until the ankle heals before I can do that.

Is anyone else have similar problems with this knee component?

Ihad a knee replacement in April 20089. After 6 mo. therapy monthly vivits etc. I could not get an answer from my doc. Saw another doc. he said the top of the knee looked too large for hte bottom of the knee. The device loosened in the top and bottom. He said the only recourse was to remove the device. The knee is doing much better have some pain related to weather as well as activity. How does one know the problem of the mismatched top and bottom components.

I just had another knee replacement…can’t walk….I have now a drop foot…….What do I do? I am so depressed…I can’t believe a doctor would advise you on medical issues, operate and leave you alone with pain pills..
.I had a Depuy… now a Zimmerman……I have had a many falls…I suffered a broken knee cap on my other leg after the first surgery… and I guess I will be confined to a wheel chair…I have suffered too long…

I had a right knee replacement – Duprey – in April of 2010. It got better for awhile, but now almost a year later, the pain is worse than before the surgery, causing discomfort in other areas. My Dr.said there is no infection and that the x-rays look good. I’m miserable and don’t know where to go from here.

I had a double hip remcnlepeat when I was 24 due to a rare bone deformity condition. Having the metal on metal implants was the best decision i could have made- and I should have had it done 5 years before I did. My life has changed considerably due to the implants and I can walk without pain. I knew the potential risks but took my chances as my alternative was a wheelchair. Its scary to think of consequences of taking that risk (like metal debris and possible recall) but even a few years of being pain free and active was worth it!
