A Rhode Island zeppoles pastry recall was issued this week by the Rhode Island Department of Health after a number of people have suffered food poisoning illness after eating pastries that may be contaminated with salmonella. The pastry shells used in the zeppoles, which were made at DeFusco’s Bakery in Johnston, Rhode Island, were stored in egg crates and they may have come in contact with raw eggs.

The pastry shells were used in zeppoles sold at DeFusco’s Bakery locations in Rhode Island as well as at other area bakeries, such as Crugnale Bakery, Colvitto’s Bistro, Sal’s Bakery and Focaccia World. The contaminated zeppoles may have also been sold to a distributor, where they may have been sold to Roch’s Market in West Warwick, Meal Works in Coventry and Touch of Class Catering in West Warwick.

State health officials are also investigating the death of a many who tested positive for the same strain of salmonella linked to the pastry recall.
