Individuals who received a Smith & Nephew Journey knee replacement and experienced problems with their device or required additional surgery may be able to pursue compensation through a product liability lawsuits.

The Smith & Nephew knee replacement lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are investigating potential claims nationwide and provide a free consultation and claim evaluation to help determine if complications may be related to a defective or recalled artificial knee.

According to recent reports, thousands of people who received a Smith & Nephew Journey knee replacement may be at risk for early failure or other complications.

In 2010, a Smith & Nephew knee replacement recall was issued for nearly 40,000 Journey Uni Tibial Baseplates after several reports were received where the base plate broke, which could result in the need for the base plate to be revised or changed. If a broken base is left unrevised, it could lead to instability and premature wear.

Earlier this year, a study found that problems with the Smith & Nephew Journey-Deuce knee had caused that device to fail in 16% of individuals within 21 months and 39% of those who received the implant experienced bad results.

The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential claims for individuals who have been impacted by the Smith & Nephew Journey knee replacement recall and for individuals who have experienced other problems that may have been caused by defective artificial knee components.

    I had a knee replaced on 8/1/2011.
Rehab is done – yet still having issues.
It was a Smith & Nephew.
Since that time – I have terrible knee pain.
At times its a shooting type pain.
I need meds, brace and ice —at times to cope.

I had a Journey knee in 2007, and a revision in 2008. I still have pain and take daily pain drugs just to deal with the terrible knee pain. It even wakes me up at night as I move in bed with sharp pain. The Doctors have said its nerve damage, and nothing can be done about it?

OMG!!! I had my right knee replaced in 2008. Some pain started about 6 months ago, but the past 2 months it suddenly has become 100% worse, sometimes to the point of nearly taking me down. I am so afraid to see another knee surgeon because my left knee is now in serious trouble. I am really caught between a rock and a hard place. I’ve read about the revisions and I cannot say that I have much faith in thinking that all will be well afterward.

I had a knee replacement in November 2009. It was never right, pain at night, stiffness, swelling. Finally I agreed to a revision done in August of 2011. It is not any better and I feel like this Smith and Nephew Journey Knee has taken me on a backwards journey.
I will never have my other knee replaced no matter how bad it is. It is still better than the rep, aced knee any day.

I had knee replacement 9-13-2011 at the VA Durham Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. I have pain, limited motion, my knee crackles when I walk, I need to use ice and pain medicine, my physician tried to put me back in rehab, rehab told me I could not do rehab because of the present condition of the knee. he gave me a crutch and told me not to use the cane at present. My doctor says it’s only fluid and want to stick a large needle in it to draw fluid which will add to the pain.

This knee came lose in 2006, and had to be replaced with johnson and johnson dupree. Today because of all the problems I have constant pain. I limp bad, and the flex in my knee is less the 70 degrees. The moral of this storey is try any thing but smith and nephew knee. If I could go back to Feb.20 2003 at 6:55 AM I would got up from the operating table, and just walkes out of the operating room. This has beennothing but a night mare.

I had a partial knee replacement on my left knee jan 31, 2012. I’ve had pain since then. My knee is worse than before surgery. It was a Smith and Nephew deuce and I am needing a new replacement. It’s only been 13 months and the things is failing. I may have a infection so I have to get a leukocyte scan and schedule another surgery for a total knee replacement. The manufacturers are at fault I believe and I plan to sue their ass because my pain and suffering has been and continue to be excruciating. I don’t want a couple grand to shut up either. My wife and kids have suffered too. Loss of money while out of work for a year, just got back to work and now this again. Tell me, what’s the limited amount in Ohio?

Had a minicus tear in 2009.Had surgery to fix it.Didnt do much good. The doc did another clean up and told me there was Arthritis in there now.Gave me two years. Was right ,went from a shot every two months to like every 3 weeks.Talked me into a TKRep.My pain would be gone.Had surgery on Hollween Oct.31,2011.I worked hard in rehab. It would bend ,but not open fully. Was a torture chamber in rehab.Im a X anything sports guy ,I can take pain and do most anything.I never slept more than 2 hrs for the first 3 months. It swelled all the time..Ice ,heat massage it .Raise it up…for months.I made him give me a Shot at 3 months and 6 months .Norcos and Ibphropen. When it was not swellen ,it would be like ok,but it was swellen 95 % of the time..Quote.. Everbodys different and theirs no reason why it swells…unquote.3 months was pure heLL and the next 3 to the 6 month mark wasn’t much better.Im retired state Corrections ,but cant make it on my retirement.I work on cars and construction on the side.Tried to work and on my feet it would swell in less than a hour.I got another shot at 6 months just to help with the pain and inflammation.I was better off with my old knee,at least I would have a ok knee for two weeks and then the pain would come.My life with this knee was like Ground Hog day, everyday was the same ,get up to a swellen knee, ice ,heat PAIN .He hads no answers,it takes sometimes a year for it to stop they told me.I started looking at the computer and seeing all about these knees.I found out its a Smith and Nephew ,1or 2 .Still trying to find out.Oh im 62 ,but most people think im like late 40s or 50.Have my 93 year old Sicilian moms young genes.Sports all my life.Got to one year, same thing. It did do better on a bike.It liked the bike with no weight on it.Actuall sometimes the swelling came down a bit ridint it.Forget walking for any distance. The Pain and couldn’t work now was coming on a year and a Half.Hard to get into seeing him every time.read of the recalls on the knee.I got another ok to see another surgeon and hes suppose to be the best.He took X rays and told me after twisting and turning it ,it was ustable and he would put another kind in .I asked whtas wrong with it.He just said it shouldn’t swell this long and he replaces it with another kind.I wanted answers and got a app. with the original Surgeon.I went 51-50 on him,I told him what I had learned and another sergeon wants to do another Knee replacement with some othe brand. He took X-rays.It looks in place ,don’t think its a base plate issue. He said I may have infection .I asked him about that at 3,6,and 1 year marks. It was really bad last month .A huge mass on the side and it was LARGE.You could near it moving and working inside. He said theres Fluid in there.WHY at 1 1/2 year mark its the worst now and has Fluid. He took this cattle surenge looking thing with a needle I could see the hole and was 2 inches long.He shoved it into the side .Its like 8 inches long and like a half dollar wide.It shot Bloody ugly fluid from the back and filled it to the front…Yes it did feel much less pressure.I couldn’t believe this was happening. He told me he would send it to the lab to find out if I had infection, then gave me my third cortazone shot for pain.Knee was better for the next two weeks, not good but better.I went back yesterday.THEY LOST my Test fluid ,there or at the Lab ,don’t know.I was ,WHAT….You have to do it again,he looked at it and said keep a pressure sleeve on it and he didn’t think it was infected .That’s it ,was gone. Now I don’t know .Quess I could demand another huge needle and take another sample…I am telling you my story.Knee does feel better than two weekd ago,but I was dieing with it then.Dont know if I should let the other surgeon do another ,or see if this one stops swelling and becomes somewhat exceptable…Another surgery would be another 6 months and More Pain and no guaretees..Havew any sugestions .Im going to the hospital and demand to see the bill and get the correct knee name 1or 2,but do know its a Smith and Nephew Journey..Thanks for reading my sad tale of wooe….

My father had a knee replacement I believe 2010. Since then he has had to get his knee scoped, and had a neurostimulator placed in his back due to the significant pain in his knee. He is still taking pain meds every day, his knee is significantly swollen, and he has popping noises every time he walks. The pain in the right knee has put a lot of pressure on his left knee and is starting to lose the left knee. His range of motion is very very limited. My father served this country for 24 years, all I want is for him to be happy again, and be active the way he was before. I hate that anyone has to go through this. I remember what it was like being by his side when he had the surgery and even aiding him at home. It was not fun at all. But we thought this was going to do the trick. Instead It’s been hell that’s for sure. I would be crushed to know that my father would need to get this knee removed and replaced with another one… but by the looks of everyone’s testimony, he may have to. I’m working diligently to research options for my father…

TROY!!!! I too had a partial knee replacement. I called this in law firm. I was told because its a partial we cannot sue. I have had 5 SYNSVIC injections in the past 2.5 yrs. I take morphine, meloxicam, norco daily. I ice and elevate ALL the time. Sleeping is ridiculous. I saw ortho Dr 3xs in 10 days. On one of these visits I was hysterical , Dr asked whats going on? REALLY?? I told him I was in excruciatiing pain. Dr says piece in replacement has slipped and I will need a complete replacement. I am scared to do this again. I think these attorneys NEED to look at this partial and realize it has affected us too..My surgery was 2/26/08. I have been having these problems for at least 3 yrs with it being the worst in the past 2 months.

  • Jeff says:

In 2006 my knee replacement with a Genesis II was done. It is now 2014, knee is swollen, flex movement low end of 90%. I stopped pain medication as I don’t like to take pills, on bad days with is approximately 3 out of 7 days a week, I am totally without use of my leg. The new doctors had scheduled approximately 5 more surgeries as an abscess became apparent. The specialist surgeon opened my knee up with all tissue down to prosthetic debrided and removed infected and damaged tissue. Back to the walking aids. The next three surgeries, one doctor stated it was not his hospital day, a doctor well known for his skills and not his bedside manner, walked in the operating room 2-1/2 hours late, Jeff was all hooked up for IV and surgery and this doctor cancelled. The next surgery he was in the surgery room, Versed already in his body to put him out, and both doctors could not believe how he has healed superficial. The knee still has no movement, to say, pain is constant and as he has a high pain tolerance he complains very little and just goes on the couch, with his ugly, infected knee, and the problem we have is a surgeon is very possessive with their surgery and do not like to work on surgery from another doctor. I, his wife, which they would fix him. I moved back to help him with the surgeries. Now I am very ill and neither one of us could do what we need for each other. Both our children are helping with monetary, physical and mental issues.

I had a left Knee replacement on Oct.20,2013 the first visit to the Dr. after the Surgery I had a small infection on top of the stitches ,he gave me Antibiotic and it went away however the Knee never felt the same. I had my right Knee replaced and both of my hips and does surgery’s went fine. I was however ok that I sort of walked a little better then before. A year went by and I felt more sicker all over my Body and by that time I could hardly walk any distance. November 18,2014 I was rushed to the Hospital as my left Knee was Red from my Toes to my Groin area. The Doctor who took the knee part out told my Daughter that he was able after he opened the Knee up to pull the part out without loosening the Hardware. The surgeon told my Daughter that the infection which was in the leg was pretty severe and he put a Antibiotic spacer in my Knee. I had the infection for 5 months was on a lot of antibiotic and had infectious wounds , 3 times I had to go back to the Hospital from the Rehab and I was in 3 different Rehab, I just now don’t have to put any longer a Dressing on . I did not know what kind of Replacement it was till I called the Orthopedic who put the Knee replacement in. Then I was told I could get the Records from the Hospital which I now have. I also have Pictures infectious wounds. I found out that I have a Smith and Nephew Replacement The Surgeon told me several times that there may be a chance that I could loose my Leg but he would do any thing to prevent this from happening. I still have my leg and the Spacer is still in place however, we talked , but the surgeon does not recommend to put a second Knee replacement in as I could get this infection again and it may would spread to other part of my Body. So here I am, have to be in a wheelchair with the left leg sticking out and have a Brace on 24/7 I hope I can find an Attorney who can handle my case, I sincerely think that it has something to do with the Product.

Had my first total knee replacement August of 2010. Recovery was a nightmare. Having my other total knee replacement this coming April and I am terrified. Sometimes my replaced knee hurts worse than the knee awaiting surgery. I’ve got the Genesis II Knee for Active Women. Absolutely horrible. Pain, swelling, aching, nerve damage. Panic and stress is sure to grow the closer to my surgery date I get. Really worried about this next surgery because of all the issues with my first one.

I had a knee replacement in 2013. I lost my job in 2014 a few months after. It was very painful when I worked. I couldn’t stand for long as well. My knee would also pop and have a nagging rubbing fill to it. I’m still having these problem.

I had a left knee replacement surgery on April 18, 2023. The medical device was manufactured by Smith & Nephew, using their Genesis ll model, I believe. Due to a defective polyurethane liner, a second surgery was performed on June 6,2023 to replace the liner. I have the defective polyurethane liner. I needed a third surgical procedure on August 31,2023 since I developed an abscess & painful skin infections. The infections were caused by several dissolvable sutures did not dissolve causing my body to try to reject them. I have just restarted physical therapy for the fourth time.

Had total knee replacement with UB orthopedics in Buffalo NY in Sept. 2021. I was 69 at the time. Many months later, still had a lot of stabbing pain. Went back to the doctor a few times and was told 1) my soft tissue did not like the implant, 2) the base may be chipped 3) 20% of people do not do well with knee replacement. I went 3 times a week for 5 months to PT. No relief, I still cannot walk far, get stabbing pain in it, sometimes it feels like something is leaking inside my knee. I have a lot of pain during the night & can’t get my knee comfortable. Sometimes using a pillow to prop it up, sometimes taking a sleep aid, and sometimes nothing works and I am up in pain all night. It is a Smith & nephew replacement. I have a lot of stiffness. I also told them I was allergic to metal & I don’t know if I have a metal replacement. Its been two years, I am a little better but not totally. Is this normal? The surgery was so painful that I will not do another one. Ever!

Tkr with FOUR revisions. Each and every pathology report after each revise state a problem with the prosthesis. Femur had black metal pieces shearing off. Another states “allergic reaction to components which was the same manufacturer each time. So, why didn’t anyone tell me ANYTHING about this component failure? Still, after all of the trauma they have left the tibial component in the knee. Now, there is severe worsening bone marrow edema with high and low signal around entire baseplate. Feels like it is only a matter of a wrong step and somethings gonna break off, explode or implode. I have an extensive education forced upon me due to massive negligence as far as ass covering rather than patient priority. Self advocating and being relentless in our pursuit for justice is the only way to make a difference. Class Action NOW. I had first tkr at 45! Something must change. What happened to that Oathe? “To Do No Harm?”
