Zithromax Heart Problems: FDA Updates Warnings for Z-Pak, ZMax

Nearly a year after a study found that side effects of Zithromax may increase the risk of heart problems, the FDA has concluded a review of the popular antibiotic, which is commonly known as Z-Pak or Zmax. Warnings will be added to the drug’s label about the risk of irregular heart rhythm problems from Zithromax, which could result in death.

On March 12, the FDA issued a safety communication about the potential risk of Zithromax heart problems, indicating that the agency has strengthened the warning label for Z-Pak, ZMax and other azithromycin-based antibiotics to indicate that users may face an increased risk of QT interval prolongation and torsades de pointes, a serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm abnormality.

The agency launched an investigation last year into Zithromax effects on the heart after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that those who took Zithromax were 2.5 times more likely to die from heart problems than those who took other antibiotics or none at all.

The FDA indicates that its own investigation confirmed the findings that Zithromax appears to cause irregular heart rhythms. The agency also found that certain patients may be more at risk than others, including those who already suffer from heart problems like QT interval prolongation and who use drugs to treat abnormal heart rhythms. The FDA also included those with low blood levels of potassium and magnesium and with naturally slow heart rates on the list of those who should steer clear of Zithromax, Z-Pak and Zmax.
