Roundup Cancer Side Effects

Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer has been on the market since the 1970s, and it is one of the most widely recognized brand-name herbicides used throughout the United States.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared that Roundup and other glyphosate weedkillers are a “probable carcinogen” after an examination of studies on humans and mice.

Roundup is commonly sold at garden and home improvement stores nationwide, and is heavily used on farms, golf courses, forests and residential gardens by farmers, migrant agricultural workers, turf managers, groundskeepers, landscapers and home gardeners.

Monsanto has encouraged widespread use by specifically engineering some crops to be Roundup resistant. However, weeds tend to become resistant to the chemical, resulting in the need for heavier use over time to maintain its effectiveness.

The IARC found that studies in the U.S., Canada and Sweden suggest that glyphosate exposure may increase the risk of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of cancer. The group also found that mouse studies linked glyphosate to an increased risk of renal tubule carcinoma, pancreatic islet-cell adenoma and skin tumors. Other studies have found an association between Roundup exposure and Parkinson’s disease.

How can you put a price on a man’s life? A farmer’s life? A father’s life? My father, the man who lived and died for his farm, suffered skin cancer (melanoma), and mantle cell lymphoma. He farmed since he was a boy in the 1930’s, with time off in the early 1950’s to attend Michigan State College agricultural school. He used Round Up on his farm, which he farmed using open topped tractors (no cabs) in direct contact with spray drift. He suffered with pain physically after his diagnosis and treatments, but the pain of not being able to work his land hurt him more deeply. The day before he died, he wanted to take a ride out to check the fields. The pain of losing this man, this farmer of God’s earth, this loving, devoted father has no words. We spread his ashes on the field behind his house.
