Doctors are taking Avandia recall into their own hands

Despite the fact that the FDA narrowly voted in October 2007 to not issue an Avandia recall, many doctors have taken the matter into their own hands and stopped prescribing the dangerous diabetes drug. Amid concerns that Avandia increases the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems, prescriptions for the medication have plummeted over the past year, and new research suggests that doctors intend to continue cutting back on prescriptions.

Glaxo failed to provide FDA with complete data on Avandia side effects

GlaxoSmithKline Plc, maker of the diabetes drug Avandia, received a harsh warning letter from the FDA this week as a result of their failure to report safety results as required by federal regulations. Over the past year, a lot of attention has been focused on Avandia side effects, since studies suggested that the medication increases the risk of heart attacks. Information outlined in a Senate Finance Committee report suggests that many of these Avandia heart attacks could have been avoided if the drug manufacturer had acted responsibly, instead of intimidating and silencing scientists who expressed concerns about the diabetes drug’s cardiovascular risks.

Avandia heart problems are preventing maker from seeking approval to treat Alzheimers

GlaxoSmithKline, Plc. has indicated that their attempts to obtain approval for their diabetes drug, Avandia, to be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease have been delayed. Concerns about Avandia heart attacks have caused many potential participants in their Alzheimer’s studies to drop out. The drug maker was hoping to gain approval to market the drug for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, which would help them replace some of the lost sales suffered recently by the former blockbuster and off-set some of the costs they will incur as a result of Avandia lawsuits which are being pursued by thousands of diabetics who suffered heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure or death while taking the drug.
