Comparing Avandia, Actos and older diabetes drugs
Concerned about the possible increased risk of heart attacks and death recently associated with Avandia, users may find useful information in two reports which compare Avandia with Actos and other diabetes medications. One report indicates that Actos may not carry the same heart attack risk as Avandia, and the other indicates that cheaper, older diabetes drugs may be safer and just as effective.

Reports of Avandia heart attacks increase sharply
According to the Associated Press, the number of reported heart problems associated with Avandia has jumped significantly since a study published May 21 in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated an increased risk of heart attacks and death associated with the diabetes drug. With knowledge of the increased risk, doctors are more aware of the cause of their patient’s heart problems and those who suffered an injury are now turning to Avandia lawsuits to pursue compensation .

Debate about Avandia heart risks continues
Yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in Chicago, the debate about heart risks associated with Avandia was a main topic. Concerns have been widespread among diabetes patients and doctors about an increased risk of heart attacks and heart related death since a study was published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Avandia dangers disclosed because of prior problems with drug maker
Last month, a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine after independent researchers reviewed data from clinical trials which showed that Avandia side effects could increase the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular death. The only reason those independent researchers had access to that data was because the drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline, agreed to publicly disclose the results of all of their clinical trials as part of a settlement with the State of New York following problems with their antidepressant Paxil.

Glaxo faces Avandia class action suit as well as individual user lawsuits
An Avandia class action suit has been filed against GlaxoSmithKline, PLC, the maker of the Type 2 diabetes medication. The lawsuit was filed by shareholders who claim that they were misled by the company about the increased risk of heart attacks and heart related death, which has recently been linked to the drug. The company also faces thousands of potential individual Avandia lawsuits from users who took the drug and suffered an injury.

Avandia heart failure black box warning
During congressional hearings on Wednesday, FDA officials indicated that they intend to ask drug makers to add a new ‘black box’ warning to Avandia and Actos. The warning will highlight the increased risk of heart failure associated with the two drugs which are used to treat Type 2 diabetes. The congressional hearings were held to review recent reports of Avandia heart problems, which could increase the risk of heart attacks and death.

FDA review confirms Avandia heart attack risk
Earlier this week a study was released which concluded that the Avandia heart attack risk is 43% greater when compared to people taking no drug or other diabetes medications. It has now been confirmed that the FDA reached a similar conclusion from the data several months ago, but failed to warn consumers.

Avandia side effects increase the risk of heart problems
According to an article in next months issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Avandia side effects significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and heart related death. While many are drawing comparisons to Vioxx, which was removed from the market nearly three years ago after the same researcher reported an increased risk of heart problems, there is no indication at this time that there will be an Avandia recall.
