Chantix is a stop smoking drug which was heavily advertised by Pfizer in direct-to-consumer advertisements until earlier this year. Most of the branded ads were pulled after safety concerns emerged about psychiatric side effects of Chantix which could increase the risk of suicide. However, new ad campaigns are beginning to resurface, now with information about the suicide risks disclosed.

Search for information about Chantix and suicide yields no results from Pfizer site

In today’s information age, consumers turn to the internet to research important concerns in their life. Given the recent reports about an association between Chantix and suicides, many potential users of the anti-smoking drug have likely visited the official site for the medication to determine whether the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior may outweigh the potential benefits provided by the drug. Unfortunately, a search for “suicide” on Chantix.com, the site provided by Pfizer for information about the medication, delivers no results.

Chantix and Suicide

Recent reports suggest that there is an association between the use of the anti-smoking drug Chantix and suicide. Chantix side effects could lead to risk of suicide or serious injury

Since its approval in May 2006, many people have turned to Chantix to stop smoking. FDA warns of increased risk of committing suicide on Chantix

On Friday, the FDA issued an alert highlighting important changes made to the Warnings and Precautions section of the Chantix label. Psychiatric symptoms, such as severe changes in mood and behavior, have been associated with the antismoking drug. FDA warns of epilepsy drug suicide risk

The FDA has issued an alert to healthcare providers regarding an increased suicide risk associated with 11 different antiepileptic drugs, including Neurontin, Lamictal, Lyrica, Trileptal and Topamax. A review of prior clinical trials demonstrated that users of the drug were more likely to commit suicide, attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts. The FDA alert comes one week after the drug regulators announced a new policy which requires many drug makers to evaluate suicide risks during clinical trials.

FDA will require drug companies to look at risk of suicide side effects

Given concerns about medications with potential side effects that may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or suicidal behavior, the FDA has instituted a new policy which will require drug manufacturers to examine whether patients become suicidal during clinical studies. The new policy was developed following the discovery that several medications which were given FDA approval could carry an increased risk of suicide, which the manufacturers did not initially warn about on the label.
