Fosamax Fracture Lawyers:
Reports of Unexplained Broken Bones from Fosamax
The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. represent individuals throughout the United States who have suffered a femur fracture from Fosamax. Recent media reports have drawn substantial attention to this potential Fosamax side effect, which Merck & Co. has failed to adequately warn users about.

Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is an osteoporosis drug prescribed millions of people to reduce the risk of fractures, primarily involving the hip. About 1,000 Fosamax lawsuits have already been filed by users of this drug who experienced a rare decay of the jawbone after taking the medication, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw or ONJ. However, more and more doctors and medical experts are now noticing a possible connection between non-impact femur fractures and broken bones from Fosamax.
An ABC News and World Report aired last night discussing the stories of several women who have experienced these spontaneous broken bones and fractures after using the Fosamax for several years. Research into the Fosamax femur fracture side effects suggest that prolonged use of the osteoporosis drug may overly suppress bone metabolism, impacting the ability of the bone to repair microdamage to the femur (thigh bone), which is one of the strongest in the body.
The ABC report highlights how users and the medical community have not been adequately warned about the risk of femur fracture from Fosamax. The FDA told ABC that they are looking into the reports of bone breaks with Fosamax, and Merck issued a statement for the report denying that any causal connection has been established.

Similar stories continue to turn up about these unexplained Fosamax thigh bone fractures, which can occur after no obvious trauma. The following news report by WCBD-TV, a local NBC Affiliate in Charleston, South Carolina, aired last month:

Fosamax Trial in New York Results in Hung Jury
The first of about 900 Fosamax lawsuits to be presented to a jury has ended in a mistrial after the jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict over whether the drug caused the plaintiff’s painful jaw injury, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Fosamax Jaw Damage Trial Starts Today
Among Fosamax lawyers, all eyes are on the federal court in Manhattan, where the first jaw necrosis trial is underway. The case is the first of three cases scheduled for trial out of about 900 Fosamax lawsuits that are pending throughout the United States. While the outcome of this case will not have a binding effect on any of the other cases, the way the jury responds to the facts could be representative of how they will decide issues in other cases and could ultimately facilitate an eventual Fosamax settlement.

Fosamax ONJ Problems Could Occur in 4% of Users After Dental Procedures
Although Merck & Co. has suggested that Fosamax side effects do not increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or only present a negligible risk, recent research has found that about 4% of users developed Fosamax ONJ problems, and the risk was seen even with short-term use after certain dental procedures were performed.

Fosamax Esophageal Cancer Side Effects
Last week we wrote about a study published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association which confirms the link between Fosamax and jaw necrosis. Now an FDA official from the agency’s division of drug risk assessment indicates that Fosamax side effects may possibly be linked to esophageal cancer.

Fosamax Jaw Side Effects Confirmed
The Fosamax lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. have been representing clients since 2006 who developed osteonecrosis of the jaw after taking the oral osteoporosis drug. Although Merck has denied that their drug causes osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), new research confirms that Fosamax jaw side effects can occur even with short-term use of the drug.
Fosamax Jaw Lawsuit Trials Set for August 2009
The first Fosamax jaw damage lawsuit is scheduled for trial in the federal MDL in August 2009, and it will be followed by additional trials in October 2009 and January 2010. The Fosamax lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are continuing to review potential cases for individuals who have been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw or other injuries caused by side effects of Fosamax.
Fosamax Warnings of Jaw Necrosis
The osteoporosis drug Fosamax has been associated with the development of a serious and disfiguring jawbone condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw. Although Merck has been aware of the painful and life-changing side effect for some time, they continue to provide inadequate Fosamax warnings to users and the medical community.

Fosamax Lawsuits Continue to Pile Up Against Merck

The lawsuits were filed on behalf of users who have suffered a disfiguring jaw condition, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, and other side effects related to the oosteoporosis drug.

Fosamax femur fracture risk outlined in new study
New research suggests that use of Fosamax may increase the risk of a rare type of low-energy femur fracture. Prolonged use of the osteoporosis drug may overly suppress bone metabolism, impacting the ability of the bone to repair microdamage to the femur.
