Studies about Avandia bone fracture side effects and connection between Fosamax and atrial fibrillation
Two new studies in the Archives of Internal Medicine provide new evidence about side effects of Avandia, Actos and Fosamax. One study established a heightened risk of bone fractures among Avandia and Actos users. The other study found a connection between women who used the osteoporosis drug Fosamax and atrial fibrillation.
Fosamax osteonecrosis risk could also impact bone in shoulders, knees and hips
The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. currently represent individuals who are pursuing lawsuits after developing osteonecrosis of the jaw as a side effect of Fosamax. A new study indicates that the popular osteoporosis drug could also increase the risk of developing osteonecrosis of the knee, hip or shoulders, which leads to painful and debilitating deterioration of the bone.

Risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw with Fosamax
A study published last week provides further evidence directly linking bisphosphonates to an increased risk of jaw bone decay, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw. The study involved intravenous bisphosphonates which are used to treat bone cancer, osteoporosis and other conditions. Although the study did not address the risks associated with oral bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, the popular osteoporosis drug has been associated with an increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw after long term use.

Prozac side effects could increase risk of fractures for seniors
According to studies released earlier this week, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and other antidepressants in the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), appear to weaken bones in elderly people, and could lead to disabling fractures. Together, these drugs account for over 60% of all antidepressant prescriptions in the United States.

Fosamax class action lawsuit filed in Canada
A Canadian law firm has filed a Fosamax class action lawsuit against Merck Frosst Canada, the manufacturer of the popular osteoporosis drug in Canada. The suit was filed because the drug maker failed to adequately warn patients and doctors about the risks of developing decay of the jaw bone. In the United States, individual Fosamax lawsuits are being pursued by hundreds of users who have been diagnosed with the painful condition, known as Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

Fosamax side effects linked to atrial fibrillation
According to reports published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine, Fosamax side effects could increase the risk of a serious heart problem, known as an atrial fibrillation. The overall risk is small, but experts have indicated that caution should be used by those at risk for an atrial fibrillation and additional research is needed to evaluate the danger. Fosamax dental problems
Fosamax side effects increase the risk of a serious dental problem, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw. Lawsuits are pending across the country against the manufacturer, with the first trials scheduled to begin next year. Merck has failed to properly warn about these side effects, which has significantly increased the problem for users. While taking Fosamax, avoiding simple dental procedures, such as tooth extractions, could greatly reduce the risk of jaw problems. However, users were not provided with sufficient information to understand and appreciate the risks.

Fosamax effects continue even after drug is stopped
As a result of the long-term effects of Fosamax, women with osteoporosis may not need to continue taking the drug to avoid the risk of fractures. A recent study indicates that after taking Fosamax for five years, the risk of most fractures is no greater if the medication is stopped. This new research raises questions about Fosamax jaw side effects, and whether thousands of users diagnosed with serious jaw problems could have avoided their permanent disability by stopping the drug after five years. Why Fosamax side effects result in jaw decay
While Fosamax is designed to strengthen bones, it actually has the opposite effect on the jaw. Many have questioned why a medication designed to improve bone density and reduce fractures would lead to jaw decay. Read the rest of this entry »
