Comparing Byetta and Januvia: But does Byetta pen cause four times more cases of pancreatitis?
Amylin Pharmaceuticals released a study Tuesday which claims that their diabetes injection Byetta is better than the Merck’s diabetes pill Januvia at controlling blood sugar levels. However, last Friday an analyst published a report comparing the two drugs, which found that the Byetta pen could cause four times more cases of pancreatitis than Januvia.

FDA publishes list of drugs that may pose serious health risks
The FDA has begun publishing a quarterly list of prescription drugs they are investigating for potential safety problems that could cause serious health risks. The information is being released as part of the agencies desire to be more transparent about the reviews they are conducting and to help inform doctors and patients about potential risks associated with the drugs.

Pfizer Advertises Chantix without Disclosing Suicide Side Effects
Exploiting a loophole in FDA drug advertising rules, Pfizer has been running millions of dollars in television ads designed to increase sales of their anti-smoking drug Chantix without warning about side effects which could increase the risk of suicide and other life-threatening injuries.

Avandia Recall: Researchers question continued use
The diabetes drug Avandia has been associated with a 40% increase in the risk of heart attacks, as well as an increased risk of congestive heart failure, bone fractures and in some cases vision loss. A recent editorial in a medical journal questions the FDA’s decision not to issue an Avandia recall.

Byetta Black Box Warning May Be Added
According to several reports, there are rumblings that the FDA may force Amylin and Eli Lilly to add a Byetta black box warning about the potential risk of pancreatitis. At least six Byetta users have died as a result of necrotizing pancreatitis or hemorrhagic pancreatitis, and there have been over 30 other reports of acute pancreatitis associated with side effects of Byetta.

Dangers of Chantix for Truckers
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) continues to advise physicians that truck drivers who are taking the stop-smoking drug Chantix, should not be considered medically fit for a commercial drivers license. However, it does not appear that anything is being done to prevent truck drivers who are currently licensed from using this dangerous drug.
