Trasylol recall issued

Although Bayer AG agreed to stop marketing their heart surgery injection Trasylol in November 2007, they are now removing any remaining stock of the drug from the U.S. market following a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The Trasylol recall was issued after data from a Canadian study confirmed that those treated with the injection faced a substantial increased risk of death.

Studies show additional evidence of Trasylol heart surgery injection problems

Evidence continues to confirm that the heart surgery injection Trasylol greatly increases the risk of kidney complications and death. A Trasylol recall was issued last November following nearly two years of concerns about the drug’s link with reports of kidney damage and death. A recent report on CBS’s 60 Minutes indicated that as many as 22,000 deaths could have been caused by the injection.

CBS 60 Minutes Report: Trasylol Injection linked to 22,000 Deaths

According to a report which will be broadcast Sunday on CBS Television’s 60 Minutes, 22,000 deaths could have been prevented if Bayer and the FDA had issued a Trasylol recall earlier. Although a study was presented in January 2006 which demonstrated a link between Trasylol and serious side effects, the heart surgery injection was not removed from the market until November 2007. The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential Trasylol lawsuits on behalf of individuals who suffered kidney failure, a heart attack, stroke or death after receiving an injection before open heart surgery.

FDA requested Bayer stop sales of Trasylol injection

The FDA announced today that they requested Bayer Pharmaceuticals halt further sales of Trasylol pending their review of data from a Canadian study which suggests that the heart surgery injection significantly increases the risk of death.  The injection has been under scrutiny from regulators for nearly two years as a result of findings that it increases the risk of serious and potentially fatal injuries.  The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. have been investigating potential Trasylol lawsuits since February 2006, and are continuing to review new claims.

FDA to review increased Trasylol death risk after study halted

FDA panel does not recommend Trasylol recall

An FDA advisory panel met last week and found that a Trasylol recall is not warranted at this time, despite evidence that suggests the drug may increase the risk of kidney failure, heart failure, stroke and death.  The recommendation was made after the panel of experts had an opportunity to review additional data which the manufacturer, Bayer AG, failed to provide to the FDA before a prior hearing in September 2006.

FDA to review safety of Trasylol for a second time

The FDA will hold a second advisory panel meeting on September 12, 2007 to review the safety of Bayer AG’s heart surgery aprotonin injection, marketed as Trasylol.  Following a prior meeting of experts in September 2006, regulators decided against a Trasylol recall and instead decided to require stronger warnings for the injection and limit its use to certain situations.  However, it was discovered after these hearings that Bayer employees withheld information about studies which demonstrated the deadly side effects of the injection. Trasylol heart surgery injection problems

Trasylol (also known as aprotinin) is a heart bypass surgery injection which is given to reduce blood loss during the procedure.  Last year the aprotinin injection was linked to an increased risk of kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes.  A recent study adds to the concerns surrounding the injection, finding that it may increase the risk of death by 50% over the five years after the heart bypass surgery.
