Epilepsy drug could increase risk of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
The FDA announced this week that they are strengthening the warnings about certain epilepsy drug side effects which could lead to severe skin reactions, especially for those with Asian ancestry. Carbamazepin, which is sold as a generic and under the brand names Carbatrol, Tegretol and Equetro, has been associated with an increased risk of developing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), which are life-threatening conditions.

CDC warns that lead poisoning can occur even at lower levels
A report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that lead poisoning can occur a levels lower than 10 micrograms, which is the generally accepted standard. Even if there are no obvious signs of problems, lower lead blood levels could result in diminished IQ and intellectual development problems.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome could result from Provigil side effects
New warnings will be added to the label of Provigil (generic modafinil tablets), indicating that the “wakefulness promoting agent” could lead to the development of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and other serious side effects. The FDA announced this week the approval of a generic form of Trileptal, which will be distributed by pharmacists under the name oxcarbazephine. Trileptal side effects have previously been associated with an increased risk of developing the painful and possibly fatal skin disorders, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS).
Maryland lead poisoning lawsuit verdict $4 million
Last week, a Maryland lead poisoning lawsuit resulted in a jury verdict of $2.5 million for a 23 year old man and $1.5 million for his 21 year old sister. Baltimore Swann Park arsenic poisoning lawsuits
The lawyers at Saiontz, Kirk & Miles, P.A. are reviewing potential arsenic poisoning lawsuits for individuals who may have been injured at Swann Park in Baltimore City, Maryland. The park, which is directly next to the site of the old Allied Chemicals factory, was closed on April 19, 2007, due to high levels of arsenic found in the soil of the popular baseball and football fields. This week it was determined that the factory owner knew of the arsenic contamination for over 30 years, and never took any steps to warn of the problems or clean up the area.

“Essentials for Kids” Jewelry Recall: Risk of Lead Poisoning
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a kids jewelry recall last week, after high levels of lead were found in the metal jewelry sets marketed as “Essentials for Kids”. Approximately 20,000 packages containing the recalled jewelry were sold between August 2005 and April 2007 for approximately $1 at gift stores, dollar stores and small discount stores. The jewelry could potential cause lead poisoning for children.

Maryland lead poisoning cases are down
According to a report released by the Maryland Department of the Environment, more children in the state are being tested for lead poisoning, and fewer are being found to have elevated blood lead levels. Lead poisoning in Maryland is one of the most significant and widespread environmental hazards for children.

Maryland toxic mold lawsuit verdict $270,000
