Another Yamaha Rhino Death for a Young Child
For the second weekend in a row, a Yamaha Rhino accident has resulted in the death of a young boy. Last week we wrote about the death of an 8 year old from Texas who was ejected from the passenger seat of a Rhino side by side when it rolled over. This past weekend, another Yamaha Rhino death occurred in Wisconsin, this time involving a 3 year old boy.

Yamaha Rhino Accident Results in Another Tragedy
Last weekend, another Yamaha Rhino Accident resulted in a tragedy, killing a young boy from Texas. The design of the Yamaha side-by-side ATV has resulted in hundreds of rollovers and accidents throughout the United States, often causing severe fractures when riders arms or legs are trapped under the vehicle. In this case, an 8 year old passenger lost his life when he was ejected and crushed by the weight of the vehicle.

Pennsylvania motorcycle accident injuries and deaths soared after repeal of helmet law
New research demonstrates the importance of helmet laws in reducing the risk of injury and death in a motorcycle accident. In 2003, the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Helmet law was repealed, allowing motorcyclists to ride with no protective headgear. However, a study published in the current issue of the American Journal of Public Health documents the immediate increase in Pennsylvania motorcycle injuries following the repeal.

Dangers of bus and truck drivers who have suffered seizures, heart attacks or other medical problems
The Associated Press published a summary of a federal study from the Government Accountability Office, which was obtained in advance of its release later this week. The report highlights a major threat on our nations highways, were hundreds of deaths and serious injuries could have been caused by bus or truck crashes where the driver should not have had a commercial drivers license due to prior seizures, heart attacks, unconscious spells or other serious health problems.
Reducing the Risk of a July 4th Fireworks Injury
Tonight thousands of Americans could suffer Fourth of July fireworks injuries caused by mishandling of fireworks or the use of illegal or unsafe fireworks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a series of safety tips to help avoid a fireworks injury and reduce the number of emergency room visits required this year as a result of fireworks accidents.
July Fourth Holiday Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), July 4th is the most dangerous time to drive all year. In 2007, there were 659 fatal auto accidents over the Fourth of July holiday, which is the most of any time for the entire year. A number of accidents are caused by alcohol, but drowsy driving over the holiday weekend could also make this a dangerous time on the roads
An 11 year-old saved his father’s life after a Yamaha Rhino rolled over on his leg
Last week, the Keeseville, New York Volunteer Fire Department honored an 11 year old boy for saving his father’s life after he was trapped under a Yamaha Rhino ATV that rolled over. Ryan Mills and his father, Albert Mills, were riding the side-by-side utility vehicle in the woods near their home when it tipped over while they were going around a turn The father’s leg became pinned under the 2,000 pound vehicle, causing severe and life-threatening injuries.

New 2009 Yamaha Rhino still does not address risk of rollover accidents
The 2009 Yamaha Rhino side by side ATV will be released this month, but it does not appear that any substantial redesign was made for the new model year, to make the vehicle safer or less prone to rollover. Since it was first introduced in 2003, the Yamaha Rhino has been plagued by stability problems, and hundreds of riders have suffered severe and disabling injuries when the vehicle tipped over.

Work Injury Death Rates Higher for Hispanics
According to a report released earlier this month by the CDC, Hispanic workers are more likely to suffer a work injury death than other racial groups in the United States. The health officials indicate that reducing the number of on-the-job deaths among Hispanics will require safer work environments, better safety information and the development of additional materials that are effective for workers who speak different languages and have different levels of literacy.
Serious injuries in non-fatal accidents are on the decline
According to a May 2008 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of serious injuries in accidents that did not result in death has declined over the past decade. Despite an increase in the number of cars on the road and miles traveled, the number of non-fatal injuries decreased by over 20%.
