Avandia problems continue for GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline, PLC was dealt two new blows last week from the Department of Veteran Affairs and the European Medicines Agency, which will ad to their Avandia problems. The V.A. has indicated that they will be severely limiting the use of Avandia among U.S. veterans and Europe’s drug regulators announced that they will be adding tougher warnings to the drug’s label.

Viagra hearing loss warning
The FDA announced yesterday that they are updating the warning label for Viagra and other impotence drugs to warn about a possible hearing loss side effect. The federal regulators identified at at least 29 reports of sudden hearing loss which occurred within hours or a few days after individuals took one of the drugs.
Medtronic Sprint Fidelis recall: Defibrillator lead could fracture
Medtronic, a global manufacturer of heart devices, suspended sales of their Sprint Fidelis defibrillator lead wire this week. The leads could be a part of any defibrillator system implanted since 2004. Defects could cause the wire to fracture or break, resulting in a severe shock or preventing the device from working when it is needed.

Byetta side effects linked to risk of pancreatitis
The FDA issued an alert yesterday indicating that the diabetes injection Byetta has been associated with serious and potentially fatal side effects for some users. There have been at least 30 reports of acute pancreatitis associated with the injection, which is given to some individuals with type 2 diabetes. The manufacturer has agreed to update the warning label to provide additional information about this potential Byetta side effect.
UPDATE 8/21/2008: Byetta lawsuits are now being reviewed and evaluated for individuals diagnosed with pancreatitis after receiving the drug.
Trileptal Stevens Johnson Syndrome risk will now extend to generics
The FDA announced this week the approval of a generic form of Trileptal, which will be distributed by pharmacists under the name oxcarbazephine. Trileptal side effects have previously been associated with an increased risk of developing the painful and possibly fatal skin disorders, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS).
Frozen pot pie food poisoning reported throughout the country
A nationwide salmonella outbreak which has sickened 139 people in 30 states has been linked to frozen pot pies manufactured by ConAgra Foods, Inc. The large food manufacturer has halted production of frozen turkey and chicken pot pies, as they may be contaminated with salmonella which could cause severe food poisoning. Ultrasound contrast problems lead to new FDA warning
According to the Wall Street Journal, the FDA is planning to issue a warning this week about ultrasound contrast problems which could lead to serious and potentially fatal reactions. The contrast agents, which are used to enhance the diagnosis of heart problems, are expected to receive a “black box” warning, which is the most serious warning the federal regulators can place on a prescription product.
Frozen hamburger recall lawsuits pursued as manufacturer goes out of business
As food poisoning lawsuits are reviewed and filed throughout the United States as a result of a frozen hamburger recall issued late last week, the company which makes the ground beef patties announced Friday that they are closing their business.
