The association between AMO Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution and Acanthamoeba keratitis is very strong according to investigators who are continuing to review reports.  The recalled contact lens solution appears to be the direct cause of injury for hundreds of people nationwide.

Xolair side effects: Risk of anaphylaxis highlighted in new black box warning

Yesterday the FDA released a new black box warning for the asthma drug Xolair (omalizumab), which will provide a stronger label regarding the risk of anaphylaxis, a serious and potentially fatal allergic reaction.  They also announced that  a new Medication Guide will be provided to those receiving the drug to provide information regarding the risk which could occur up to 24 hours or more after the medication is given.  Read the rest of this entry »

Snack food recall expanded to Super Veggie Tings

Following the Veggie Booty snack recall on June 28, 2007, the manufacturer announced yesterday that they are also recalling Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks Snack Food.  The crunchy corn sticks use the same seasoning as Veggie Bootie, leading to fears that the snack food may also be contaminated with salmonella, which has sickened people throughout the United States.

Risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw with Fosamax

A study published last week provides further evidence directly linking bisphosphonates to an increased risk of jaw bone decay, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw.  The study involved intravenous bisphosphonates which are used to treat bone cancer, osteoporosis and other conditions.  Although the study did not address the risks associated with oral bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, the popular osteoporosis drug has been associated with an increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw after long term use.

Emergency room waiting times increase nationwide

In hospitals throughout the United States, those in need of emergency room treatment are forced to wait an average of four hours, according to a report released last week.  Researchers found that overall wait times are longer than last year, and this raises serious concerns about the quality of emergency care which can be obtained.  Longer wait times can increase the risk of medical mistakes or misdiagnosis, which can have serious consequences for the patient. Veggie Booty recall due to salmonella food poisoning

The FDA announced a nationwide Veggie Booty recall as a result of salmonella food poisoning reported in at least 17 states.  The green-colored snack food marketed by Robert’s American Gourmet has been associated with at least 52 cases of illness, most of them occurring in young children.

Coly-Mycin M use via nebulizer associated with a death

Yesterday the FDA issued a public health advisory regarding a risk of death associated with the use of Coly-Mycin M and generic forms of colistimethate when used in a premixed form for inhalation with a nebulizer.  Although colistimethate is only approved by the FDA for intravenous or intramuscular injection, it is often prescribed to treat cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas infections by mixing it with sterile water to form a solution for inhalation via a nebulizer.  Use of premixed, ready-to-use solutions could lead to lung injury or death. Prozac side effects could increase risk of fractures for seniors

According to studies released earlier this week, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and other antidepressants in the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), appear to weaken bones in elderly people, and could lead to disabling fractures.  Together, these drugs account for over 60% of all antidepressant prescriptions in the United States.

Paxil birth defect risk evaluated by New England Journal of Medicine

The increased risk of birth defects associated with Paxil and other SSRI antidepressants was evaluated in two new studies published yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Researchers found an association between antidepressants taken early in the pregnancy and three specific birth defects: abnormal skull development, gastrointestinal abnormality and a defect of the brain.  However, the overall risk was small.
