Contact lens wearers remain unaware of Complete MoisturePlus Recall
Over two months ago, Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. issued a nationwide recall of their multi-purpose contact lens solution, Complete MoisturePlus. Serious and potentially blinding eye infections, known as Acanthamoeba keratitis, have been linked to the solution, yet many contact lens wearers remain unaware of the Complete MoisturePlus recall and continue to use the solution.

FDA Video: MRI contrast dye warnings due to risk of NSF
The latest edition of the FDA Patient Safety News webcast features a segment about the dangers of MRI contrast agents containing gadolinium. For individuals with kidney failure, the MRI contrast dyes could lead to a serious condition called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) or nephrogenic fibrosing demopathy (NFD).

Hospital malnutrition in elderly patients
According to new research, elderly hospital patients may not be receiving sufficient food and caloric intake. This could increase the risk of hospital malnutrition and dehydration, which could lead to additional medication complications, including death.

Green bean recall due to botulism risk
A nationwide green bean recall has been issued due to a botulism risk, which could cause serious and potentially fatal injuries. The recall comes less than two weeks after tens of millions of cans of chili, hot dog sauce, beef stew and other meat products were recalled following several reported cases of botulism. Although the two recalls are from two different companies, both appear to have been caused by manufacturing failures during the processing of the canned foods.

Zicam lawyers are reviewing lawsuits for loss of smell and taste
According to an article in the Arizona Republic, the manufacturer of Zicam currently faces over 400 lawsuits from users who lost their sense of smell or taste after using the popular cold relief nasal gel. Botulism poisoning strikes New Mexico man
The nationwide recall of canned chili and other meat products appears to have caused another potentially fatal case of botulism. A New Mexico man remains hospitalized in serious condition due to botulism poisoning as health officials attempt to confirm if he ate any of the canned foods which were recalled by Castleberry Foods, Co.

FDA Panel does not recommend Avandia recall
Monday an FDA advisory panel reviewed whether there should be an Avandia recall, but recommended that the type 2 diabetes drug remain on the market with stronger warnings regarding the heart risks. Although the panel voted 20 to 3 that Avandia does increase the risk of heart attacks, they did not believe that sufficient evidence exists at this time to recommend a recall.

Duragesic Patch settlement reached following $5.5 mil verdict
Last month a federal jury in Florida awarded $5.5 million to the family of a 28 year old man who was found dead of fentanyl overdose after putting on the Duragesic Patch. Late last week it was reported by Bloomberg that the family and Johnson & Johnson have reached a Duragesic Patch settlement for $2.5 million to avoid a lengthy appeals process.

Nursing home neglect leads to criminal charge against Life Care Centers of America
Life Care Centers of America, was indicted last week on charges of manslaughter, abuse and neglect in connection with the death of a 74 year old resident at their Massachusetts nursing home. While civil lawsuits are often pursued by family members as a result of nursing home abuse and neglect it is rare to see companies facing criminal charges.

Baxter Pump Recall Update
Following a Baxter Pump Recall on July 20, 2007 involving approximately 4500 triple channel infusion pumps, the company announced last week that they are recalling 534 additional infusion pumps due to a discovery that devices sent in for service and repair may not have been properly worked on.
