Botulism poisoning risk continues following canned foods recall
Following the recall of tens of millions of cans of chili, hot dog sauce, beef stew, hash and other foods, some stores continue to carry the canned foods on their shelves. The recall was initiated due to a risk of botulism poisoning and federal health officials have expressed serious concern that store owners and consumers continue to not realize the danger associated with these recalled canned foods. Limited Zelnorm use to be allowed despite dangers
Despite substantial dangers associated with Zelnorm, the FDA announced Friday that they will allow limited sales for those who are in “critical” need of the IBS drug. Strict restrictions will be placed on who can receive Zelnorm, and it will remain unavailable for the general population due to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and other life-threatening injuries.

MRI complications lead to serious skin problems for some
Since magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was first introduced in the 1980s, it has become a widely used diagnostic tool. In many cases a contrast agent is administered before the test to allow the physicians to differentiate blood vessels from nearby tissue. However, for those with kidney problems, contrast enhanced MRI complications could result in a serious problem, known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

Avandia recall to be reviewed by FDA
The FDA will hold advisory panel meetings next week to review whether there should be an Avandia recall following reports which indicate users of the diabetes drug face a 43% increased risk of heart attacks. Although the FDA is not required to follow the advise of their advisory panels, they usually do.

Botulism risk leads to expanded canned food recall
The canned food recall issued last week for products containing hot dog chili sauce has been expanded to include more than 80 different types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products. The cans may be contaminated with the botulinum toxin, a bacteria which causes botulism.

Botulism Canned Food Recall List
Following an initial recall on July 18, 2007 which included only 10 different types of canned hot dog chili sauce, Castleberry Food Company and the FDA expanded the recall to include all canned foods made on one particular manufacturing line at an Augusta, Georgia Plant. Baxter Infusion Pump Recall
On July 20, 2007, the FDA announced a Baxter infusion pump recall as a result of software irregularities in upgraded Colleague Triple Channel Volumetric Infusion Pumps. The product defect could cause life-sustaining therapy to stop unexpectedly, which may result in serious injury or death. Hot dog chili sauce recall due to botulism outbreak
Canned food products containing hot dog chili sauce have been linked to the development of botulism, a rare but serious disease caused by contamination with Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Following an initial announcement on July 18, a nationwide hot dog chili sauce recall was expanded on July 21 to include all products manufactured by Castleberry Food Company at their Augusta, Georgia plant, including some dog foods.

Oxycontin settlement approved
Yesterday, a federal district court judge approved an OxyContin settlement, where the drug maker and three company executives will pay a $634.5 million fine, be placed on probation and perform community service for their actions in misleading the public about the powerful painkiller’s risk of addiction.

Heart CT Scan cancer risk
High-resolution heart CT scans used to diagnose blocked arteries and heart disease could increase the risk of cancer, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The 64-slice heart scans, known as a computer tomography (CT) coronary angiography, use high levels of radiation, which lead to an increased risk of cancer which is especially apparent in women and young adults.
