Deep Vein Thrombosis (also known as DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis or arms.  This can result in blood cells blocking the vein entirely or breaking off and flowing to a vital artery.  This poses a serious danger since the blockage of vital arteries can restrict blood flow to the heart, lungs or brain.  As a result an individual could suffer a heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism or sudden death.

Deep vein thrombosis is the primary cause of pulmonary embolisms, which can be fatal.  Another serious long-term complication which could result from DVT is postthrombotic syndrome.  This condition causes pain, swelling, discoloration and leg sores.
