OSTEONECROSIS OF THE HIP FROM FOSAMAX

Fosamax is an oral bisphosphonate medication prescribed to treat osteoporosis. The drug inhibits bone turnover, which is designed to reduce the risk of fractures. However, long-term use could lead to a gradual decay of bone in the jaw, hip, knee or shoulder as a side effect of Fosamax.

Necrosis of the hip is caused by decreased blood flow to the bone, causing it to weaken and die. It is associated with extreme pain and a loss of mobility leaving the hip bone permanently damaged and irrepairable.

Symptoms of Fosamax hip necrosis could include:

  • Joint Pain in the hip
  • Limited Mobility
  • Gradual increase in pain levels
  • Loss of hip Function.

The hip problems experienced may vary in patients due to the progressive nature of the condition. For some, hip necrosis has a slow onset, beginning with mild joint pain, for others, the process is more rapid.
