Osteopenia is a medical term used to describe a level of bone density which is below the normal level, but not yet at the low levels associated with osteoporosis. The symptoms of osteopenia are similar to those of osteoporosis.

The popular osteoporosis medication, Fosamax, has also been prescribed for treatment of osteopenia to prevent further bone density loss. Studies have shown that a side effect of Fosamax is a serious jaw injury, osteonecrosis of the jaw. After prolonged use of Fosamax, there is a greatly increased risk of jawbone death and permanent injury, so it is important to monitor for the signs and symptoms of jaw necrosis.
Other studies have suggested that Fosamax side effects may also increase the risk of decay in other bones, leading to hip necrosis, knee necrosis or shoulder necrosis.
