Chrysler Jeep Liberty Recall: Defective Steering Part

8/1/2006 - Chrysler issued a Jeep Liberty Recall of their sport utility vehicle for a defective steering part, which could cause drivers to lose control of their vehicle and crash.

Over 800,000 Jeep Liberty vehicles have been recalled due to a defective steering part which could cause drivers to lose control of their vehicle and suffer serious injuries in automobile accidents.  DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group announced the recall citing a front suspension lower ball joint that could become easily worn and loosen.  As a result, the Jeep Liberty may fall onto the front end tires, causing drivers to lose control of their vehicle.

The recall affects all Jeep Liberty vehicles in the 2002 through 2006 year models.  Multiple accidents have been reported after the steering ball joint failed, but it is unclear at this time exactly how many accidents or serious injuries may have been caused by this defect nationwide. Reports indicate that as of January 2006, the National Highway Safety Administration had received nearly 500 complaints regarding this or similar problems with the Jeep Liberty.

This recall follows a prior Jeep Liberty recall in November 2003, regarding the same steering problem.  At that time Chrysler recalled nearly 300,000 vehicles from 2002 and 2003 and replaced the ball joint.  However, some of the parts may have been damaged during shipment or during installation.

Manufacturers of automobiles have a duty to their customers to make sure that the products are safe.  They must use care to make certain that the products are properly designed, manufactured, tested and inspected.  The repeated problems with the steering ball joint in the Jeep Liberty sports utility vehicle could be the cause of serious and catastrophic injuries which could have been prevented.
