PEANUT BUTTER RECALL
On February 14, 2007, the FDA announced a recall of all jars of Peter Pan peanut butter and some jars of Walmart brand Great Value peanut butter purchased since May 2006. All of the jars included in the recall contain a product code beginning with "2111" printed on the lid. Tests results have confirmed that these jars may be be contaminated with the Salmonella Tennessee bacteria, which could lead to serious illness. The peanut butter recall followed a multi-state investigation into the cause of hundreds of reports of salmonella food poisoning. Symptoms of salmonella food poisoning include high fever, persistent diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Most adults recover from salmonella sickness within a few days or weeks. However, the elderly, young children and those with weak immune systems can be susceptible to serious injury. In severe cases, salmonella can invade the blood stream and cause life-threatening infections.
>>INFORMATION: Salmonella Food Poisoning
All jars of the recalled peanut butter were manufacturered by ConAgra Foods, Inc. at the same Georgia plant. It has been confirmed that a leaky roof and faulty sprinkler system at the plant allowed moisture to help the salmonella grow. The manufacturer of the peanut butter was negligent in failing to properly maintain their plant, test the final product and design the plant to prevent salmonella from contaminating the final product.
