Please note that the lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are no longer taking on new cases involving Oxycontin. The content on this page is provided for informational purposes only.

OxyContin is a powerful time-released pain killer that has been prescribed to millions of people.  The manufacturer failed to warn about the risk of Oxycontin addiction and actively made false promotional statements designed to mislead doctors about the risk of addiction.

OxyContin addiction poses a serious and substantial danger to users and could lead to withdrawal, financial ruin, overdose and even death.  Since 2002, the lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk have represented individuals pursuing Oxycontin lawsuits. New potential claims are no longer being reviewed.

OXYCONTIN ADDICTION PROBLEMS

OxyContin (a form of oxycodone) is an opiate-type painkiller used to combat substantial pain over a long period of time.  It is designed to break down over a 12 hour period, slowly being absorbed into the bloodstream.  The medication acts on certain areas of the brain, causing a temporary relief from pain.  OxyContin is also highly addictive and can lead to substantial problems for users.

Doctors and health officials have long known that there was a risk of Oxycontin addiction problems, but the 12 hour recommended dosage approved by the FDA was thought to be adequate to avoid the serious addictive tendencies of the drug.  However, the makers of this drug engaged in what federal regulators called a “long-term scheme” to maximize sales by making false representations that were intended to encourage overuse and prescription of the drug to people who may have been better suited for alternate pain medication.

The maker of OxyContin, Purdue Pharma LP, actively promoted the drug for use every 8 hours, instead of every 12 hours as approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  They also falsely advertised that the OxyContin addiction risk was less than what is associated with other available pain medications.  Doctors were led to believe that the slow release time would cause fewer changes in pain levels for users and that the medication could be stopped at any time without any repercussions such as withdrawl.

OXYCONTIN CLASS ACTION SUITS

As a result of their actions, Purdue Pharma, LP has faced thousands of lawsuits from individual users who were injured as well as Oxycontin class action suits from several groups.  The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. have been representing individuals who suffered addiction, withdrawal, overdose and death since 2002. Potential new claims are no longer being reviewed by our attorneys.

UPDATE: The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are no longer reviewing new OxyContin lawsuits for users of the medication.
