This archived post is for informational purposes.[/alert]

One of the less common, but certainly very serious, Plavix side effects is the increased risk of TTP (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura).  TTP is a rare blood condition which can be fatal.  The manufacturers of Plavix did not adequately and fully warn of this potential side effect which could occur after taking the blood thinner.

>>MORE INFORMATION:  TTP Caused by Plavix (clopidogrel)

Over the past few months, Saiontz & Kirk has been investigating Plavix lawsuits for users who have suffered internal bleeding, ulcers, TTP, heart attacks, strokes or death.  Although the number of people diagnosed with TTP after taking Plavix is small, there has been an established increased risk associated with the medication, even if it is only taken for a few weeks.

>>INFORMATION:  Plavix Safety Information and Resources

Any individual who has taken Plavix (clopidogrel) and been diagnosed with TTP may be entitled to compensation.  If you, a friend or family member may have a case, request a free Plavix TTP claim evaluation.

I have been on Plavix 75 mgs. since August 2006 when I had a mild heart attach. I have just not felt well since taking it. I would like to just take an aspirin daily instead of the Plavix. I do have stomach problems most of the time but nothing that has been diagnosed by a Dr. for that spacific purpose. I am wondering if it would be safe to stop taking it?

  • Austin Kirk says:

    Ms. Loop,

You should not stop taking Plavix (or any blood thinner) without speaking with your doctor and obtaining appropriate direction. Stopping Plavix without a doctor’s knowledge could result in serious harm.

If you have any further questions regarding the potential Plavix lawsuit claims, please do not hesitate to call our office toll free at (800) 522-0102 or request a free claim evaluation to speak with an attorney.

I started taking Plavix in 2002. I stopped taking it in Nov. 2006 because I have had huge bruises all over my body with hard lumps that appear to be blood clots. I had blood tests done on December 1st and haven’t got the results yet. I have severe ulcers on my gums and cannot wear my dentures. I am having a dental consult on Dec. 6

I saw my doctor last week and he had me immediately stop taking plavix for a 7 day period after which I will have some blood lab work done. But he also did not renew the Rx. When I asked about that, he said “Let’s wait and see what the blood work shows.” He did not explain it any further and I am not sure if he is planning to keep me off Plavix or not. We will see in a few days.

I say my doctor just last week and these visits are always with current law results. Everything was normal and I am still on Plavix and Platell. Should I be worried? There is a history of heart attacks in my family.

I have been on plavix and asprin for over a year now due to a blocked artery that was implanted with a drug coated stent, I was recently diagnosed with anemia. Could this be from plavix?

Posted on December 28, 2006 at 6:02 pm

  • Austin Kirk, Esq. says:

    Katie,

Saiontz, Kirk & Miles is currently investigating potential Plavix side effects lawsuits for individuals who have been diagnosed with gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, heart attacks, strokes or TTP blood disorder. Fortunately it does not appear that you have been diagnosed with any of those conditions.

Showing signs of anemia, such as tiring, turning pale, increased pulse rate, low blood pressure, etc. could be symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding, and you may want to review that with your doctor. Other symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding may include vomiting blood, black stools, passing blood or shock. Certainly if you experience any of those problems, immediate medical attention should be sought.

If you have been diagnosed with gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers in addition to the anemia diagnosis, feel free to request a free claim evaluation to determine if the condition may be from Plavix side effects.

My dad has been on Plavix for 3 years now. And he is just not been feeling right since. He get dizzy all the time. His doctor also told him to take asprin daily. Isn’t that just too much thinning of the blood? and his family doctor told him he didn’t need to be on plavix. He had a triple by pass and that is why an when they put him on it. He can’t afford it at all. but I don’t know what to tell him to do.

My mothers had a Cypher Stent inserted December 15, 2006 and was placed on Plavix the morning of December 16, 2006. Since December 16 she has complained of feeling dizzy and very nauseated. She has no appetite because of the nausea. I have tried to explain to her cardiologist that she is very sensitive to so many medications but he just orders tests which fortunately at this time are WNL. She looks to me for answers and at this point I don’t have any. Is nausea a side effect of Plavix? She does have a history of a stomach ulcer in the late 1950’s. Could the Plavix be irritating this old ulcer site? It is a rare occassion that she feels like doing anything but that feeling doesn’t last for very long. I am totally at a loss as to how to help her. Please give me some direction.

Hi—I read the post from Jeanne Henckle regarding ulcers in her mouth and wondered if Plavix is causing the ulcers I have. I’ve boon on Plavix since Oct.1,
2006 and did also have a medicated stent put in my right main artery. Beginning in late Dec. I began to have pain in my mouth. From January to today, May 6, 2007, I’ve had constant mouth ulcers. I’ve been to my pcp twice and have had “magic swizzle” to gargle on 3 occasions. I also was told it was a virus. Then I had a prednisone pack. They went away temporarily. Now they’re back. My mouth hurts a lot and I can’t eat a lot of food or drink hot drinks.

I’m going to a dermatologist–that’s what my pcp suggested. I even have been
told that my GERD may be acting up. NEVER have I had ulcers like this–maybe 1 a yr. if I eat too many tomatoes.

My cardiologist said my meds are NOT the cause. I’m not sure what to do.

    Can you advise? Anybody???

Plavix is a very dangerous medication , I developed TTP one of the rarest side effects of the drug after taking plavix for a couple of weeks due to stents placed in my legs from P.A.D. , my symptons were confusion , invouluntary jerking of my hands , head and body, weakness , my speech became slurred , headaches and dizziness, I was rushed to the hospital , upon arrival to the hospital I began to convulse in the operating room , the medical team in my local hospital examined me and did a barrage of test on me. They found my platelet levels had completely dropped and my white cells were starting to deplete,as well as numerous antibodies built up im my body, I was dying !!! I was placed in a medically indueced coma The doctors preformed a plasma exchange on me about 20 bags worth , needless to say I recoverd in seven days thanks to the medical team, the doctors informed me that a recurrence can happen within 10 years , and there is no way they can tell if or when.

I have an aunt who has been in the ill since December. Two weeks ago she was admitted to the hospital after falling and breaking her wrist. She has no energy or much of an appetite. Test results found an enlarged spleen and bone marrow scan results were negative. Here white cell count was deleted. She moved from the hospital and is in hospice. They thought she would not live two more days but she has lived two weeks and is not taking any medication. I found out today that she had been taking Plavix medication. Here family has given up hope. Can anything be done?

Just read the entries on this blog and you can draw your own conclusion. T.T.P. and Plavix are much more common than the drug company would like to admit. My husband had a drug-eluding stent placed by balloon angioplasty and was put on Plavix, Coumadin & aspirin. Two months later, he developed T.T.P., as a result, a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The Neurologist stated “cause of death, subarachnoid hemorrhage, contributing factor(s) were use of coumadin & plavix. He was 54 years old and had just begun his “early retirement”.

has there been any recent updates about the plavix lawsuit ?

Posted on October 2, 2007 at 7:32 am

  • Sara Stone says:

First of all by pass surgery arteries frequently clog back up within 3 years – then you need another surgery and a by pass is not easy.
2nd – the reason drug eludiating stents were developed in the first place was because bare metal stents were clogging up!!
Plus you probably have many, many reduced flow spots all over your body – particularly if you SMOKE and eat HYDROGINATED OIL (barbeque anyone?)!!

So, the best thing you can do is take your blood thinners, reduce your blood pressure, and get your cholesterol levels down, exercise to build your heart muscle and CHANGE YOUR DIET!
DEAN ORNISH’s work clearly showed that you can REVERSE plaque buildup within 3-6 months, improving each and every month, by changing just life style habits. A hard one I know. We really need the restaurant industry to HELP US OUT! AND PLEASE TAKE OUT THE SALT AND HYDROGINATED OIL!!

Why didn’t Larry King or David Letterman choose life style choice instead of by-pass?? I’ll never understand that one – they can afford private chefs!! And apparently it was elective surgery.
I’ll bet Woody Harrelson doesn’t end up with a by pass or a stent.

You know what? I hate conspiracy theories! So maybe I’m just naive. I realize we have pollution being dumped into rivers, land and air by corporations who know better. We have greedy loggers and builders taking our agricultural land and the last two remaining lungs of the planet (the Pacific Northwest and the Amazon) apparently just because if they don’t someone else will anyway?? Our own blood bank sat on aids tainted blood for literally weeks or months after they knew – for what reason?? I don’t know, but they caused thousand of hemeophliacs to contract aids.
Meanwhile our good Christians were thumping their bibles and blasting the homosexual community!

Tonsillectomies were all the rage apparently at one point and it looks as though gastric stomach binding is the next fad.
So maybe Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson were/are selling stents in spite of their knowledge that they increased blood clots – but why?? Unless, our laws and the penalties inflicted on companies that DELIBERATELY sell a faulty product are not extreme enough, or it’s so difficult to PROVE that they engaged in deceptive practices – that it’s still to their benefit to keep selling.
The tobacco industry was and still is marketing to 3rd world nations to feebly try to extend their life – instead of looking for ways to change to another product. And for god’s sake why is our government allowing it?? My question is, how do they live with themselves?? How do they face their children in the morning?? Isn’t that the question? Shouldn’t we be figuring out what it is that causes a logger, doctor, Pharmaceutical Company, manufacturer to keep doing something they know is hurting us All??
So no, I don’t want to automatically assume Boston Scientific knew this new stent would cause MORE blood clots than bare metal sents. Wouldn’t you assume they were hoping for less?? When they first put these out in the market, they were lucky if they had 6 months of study. So what happens if you keep taking Plavix and aspirin?? Does that reduce the risk? And what difference does it make if you have to keep taking the drugs for the rest of your life?? You’re going to have to keep taking the 3 blood pressure, 2 cholesterol lowering, and 1 aspirin anyway – what’s one more Plavix?? I know the cost is exorbitant, hopefully will come down, but Patient Assistant Programs are available for those that can’t afford them – AND you could always opt for the VERY CHEAP life style changes if you have the motivation, right?

Plus what are a few lives lost here and there in the interest of science anyway? We don’t mind throwing away our young – naive, brother’s son’s and husband’s lives – not to mention the completely innocent civilians in countries we attack for what purpose?? To churn the economy??
Plus, you were going to die anyway! Right?? You either had a heart attack or you had arteries that were so blocked you couldn’t walk across the room and were doomed anyway.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing but admiration for Ralph Nadar and the thousands, no millions of people around the world working tirelessly as watch dogs to protect us from thief’s in the night, but this is America, no the world and everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Let us put our energy into changing our laws so we hold the individual corporate heads accountable for deception. Let Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson TELL US as soon as they know/suspect that bare metal stents may be better.

In the meantime, let us be extremely grateful that we have the choice of stents at all. I am so glad I didn’t have to do a by-pass.

I have two stents and one is medicated. I have been taking plavix and asprin for over a year. My blood pressure goes up when I sleep and I have some confusion and fatigue. My energy level is very low and the Drs. give me stress test, etc. and say I have a strong heart. Twice I have had a heart cath and afterwards my blood pressure goes down and I take half the Coreg prescribed and about one-third of the bloodpressure prescribed and feel much better but as time goes on my blood pressure starts rising at night when I sleep and I have to take the full dose of Coreg 25 mg at night and increase my blood pressure medicine- lisenpril. I believe the Dr. opens up something when he does the heart cath which I believe is small blood clots which tests and machines do not show. I’m wondering if I should get off the plavix and just take two asprins a day, or if he should take me off plavix and put me on cumidan or if he should just have me to take another asprin a day along with the plavix of if he should give me a small dose of cumidan with the plavix and asprin. Let me know if you have any answers.

    Polly,

You should speak with your doctors about any concerns you have about your medications, and no prescription medications should be stopped, especially a blood thinner, without your doctor being involved in that decision.

In dec 07, my sister had an MI, had stent placed and then went into afib, she has hx of diabetes, high bp, high cholesterol. she was placed on plaxix and continued to have on and off chest pressure and pain. March 08, chest pain was worse and as a nurse and sister told her to go to emergency room, they did emergency cath and told her she needed open heart. very dramatic change in cath in dec and cath in march. she was taken off plavix and placed on heparin. her surgery was postponed twice per surgeon. post op first day she was fine, but next day she had blood hanging , placed on baloon pump and cardiac surgeon states he was optimistic and she would be fine. by that night she had infarcted in kidneys, colon, bilateral lower limbs. they had taken her back to surgery and removed part of her colon and abd. she was on life support and induced coma and they wanted to amputate both legs. We had to stop at this point. She was a very energetic 60 yr old whom worked her whole life and none us expected this. Her body swelled so large that there was closed casket. they were unable to embalm her. her surgeon believed it was from plaque from aorta. But i have a feeling it was from plavix and heparin, which cause HITT. We are currently waiting for hospital records to look at the labs. This story is very important for people to read. So make sure when your doctor gives you new meds, do the research first. Even in the hospital have nurses print out side effects and dangers before taking any new medication. Make your doctor explain, it is really his job, not his nurse.

I am not sure how to begin with this except that my family and I are still numb and in shock. My Mom went in yet again for another Heart Cath after a EKG showed some abnormal rhythms. She was very apprehensive about this heart cath which I believe was her 12th! She did not survive and passed away 2 days after a second heart cath. During the second Heart Cath she had a heart attack during the procedure and was never the same. My biggest concern and frustration is reading about the same symptoms my Mom was having while taking the Plavix and especially in the last few months. I believe she may have stopped taking the Plavix for a few weeks (none of us were fully aware of this situation). I also don’t know if she was fully informed of the extreme dangers of not taking the Plavix and if the situation could be corrected. If this medication is so dangerous, patients should be fully informed of what can happen if they don’t take it, what can happen if they DO take it and what would be a better alternative. I know my Mom was not given another option. She had two drug coated stents and had been on Plavix since they were inserted over 3 years ago. If there is another medication that would be safer and yet just as effective, why are the physicians not letting the patients and family know this? My Mom was also having kidney pain and was anemic enough to need intravenous iron supplements. My family and I are still trying to make sense of all this and don’t know what we could have done to better educate ourselves and our Mom from harm. My worry is that other’s will go through the unbearable pain and guilt we are because of not knowing all we could know about this drug. If you have a family member or if you are taking this medication, PLEASE talk frankly with your physician about this medication and ask any and all questions and concerns you have so that you can do what you know is best for you or you family. <3

I was admitted to the emergency room in November and diagnosed with a blood clot in my lower leg. The doctors gave me Plavix. I took it for about 3 weeks and on December 19th was admitted to the hospital with extreme fatigue and malaise. I was diagnosed with internal bleeding and required 4 blood transfusions over the next 2 days. The doctors told me to continue taking Plavix but I stopped. Now I am wondering if Plavix caused the internal bleeding. My doctor wants me to take Plavix, but I am afraid to. My blood results are still not normal.

In October of 2008, I was diagnosed with TTP. I spent two weeks in the hospital, several days of which I was in and out of conciousness and having convulsions. My life has been torment since then. Thankfully, I am recovering and after weeks of Plasma Pheresis treatments and multiple transfusions of whole blood I am now on a medication regimine that seems to be doing the job. I am 38 years old and have taken Plavix since 2000 due to a heart attack. Had I known the risk involved I would have never done so. The TTP stole precious months from my life and I am still dealing with some of the residual effects of this serious diagnosis. Take it to heart and always reserve the right to make your own medical decisions. If your doctor prescribes this dangerous drug, get your facts before you agree.

My husband was placed on Plavix 11 days ago to help with poor circulation in his legs. Almost the next day after starting on it his appetite diminished and his stomach has been terribly upset and he now has diarrhea .He has dropped about 10 pounds in 9 days! I got on the computer to research this drug and now I am wondering if these could be symtoms of this TTp side effect or if these are symtoms that others have had from taking Plavix. He contacted doctor about these symtoms and the doctor scheduled him for a CAT scan next week to see what’s going on. He didn’t seem to think the Plavix has anything to do with it.

I have read the myriad of comments regardiing Plavix, Aspirin, etc, etc.
I had a severe MI 2 years ago, so bad that I was put on Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, and Heparin all at the same time. At that time they inserted two stents. They told me my heart was functioning at only 30% and they were very concerned that I would have another MI. When I returned after three months, I believe the Dr. was more excited than I was about the improvements. My ejection fraction was already up to 55% which is considered normal, my EKG (exercise) was done, and nearly impossible to find the damaged heart. Also, my cholesterol had dropped from around 200 to 140.
He said that was unusual to see such a change that rapidly. The secret. I did every damned thing they told me to do. Eat chicken, fish, and no beef or pork. I walked (almost ran) 30 minutes a day, five days a week, come hell or high water, used only olive oil (and very little at that), dropped about 20 pounds, and feel better than I had for many years. My conclusion: He was so surprised, because most people, post MI, only pretend or give lip service to what they are told to do. I did exactly what I was told, am now only on a baby aspirin and plavix, with no serious side effects, except easy bruising from ‘roughhousing’ with my dog. My opinion: Very few people do what they are told to do, can’t get motivated, or just don’t care.
I cared, I walked, I took my meds, and I carefully watch my diet. Sure, it’s a pain in the derriere some of the time, but I am having a great time at 77, and I will continue my program religiously so long as I can get out of bed and be mobile. So–I challenge all of you to do the same–don’t just think about it–DO IT.

I was put on Plavix and one adult aspirin daily after having two stents put in my arteries three months ago. I am on dialysis three days a week and in the last month I have had three episodes where I have become so cold while undergoing dialysis (in the third and fourth hours) that I cannot stop shivering and shuddering. I stop shivering but still remian cold when I am unhooked. On those same three occasions I have had a thirty minute period where I lose myself. I don’t know what I do????

My kidneys failed 3 1/2 months ago so this is all new to me. The need for the stents came after a physical to see if I am healthy for a transplant and learned I had two serious artery blockages.

When this has happened I cannot account for where I am for 30 minutes. I just drive off from the dialysis center thinkiing I am okay but I do not show up at my wife’s place of business to pick her up until at least an hour later and it is only a 20 ,minute ride. The period is very hazy. She has called me during this period and I don’t remember it and give her answers that make no sense. I can vaguely remember driving in neighborhoods I don’t know?

It has never happened on days that I have not had the extreme cold shivers although I am not as clear headed as I would like on many occasions.

I begin tomorrow riding the Metro bus because I no longer trust myself to drive a car after undergoing dilaysis. I was told of TTP today and looked it up on the Web. I am scared.

Please pay attention to the potential signs of TTP: Bruising, muscle pain, and confusion. If caught early it IS treatable.

Last year, around March I was put on Tricor, a similiar med to Plavix, and seemed to have some strange side-effects. I could not think straight and had confusion, slured speech, and shaking hands. I stopped the Tricor and talked to my Doctor. She insisted that it could not cause these side-effects, so I started the meds again. Within four days the same symptoms returned, and I again stopped Tricor. A week later I was fully recovered and informed my Doctor that I was not going to take any cholesterol meds ever again! Since then, I have changed my diet and my overall cholesterol level has gone from 445 to 230. My Doctor is still insisting that I take a Statin for it but I refuse every time. She doesn’t accept that these meds are very dangerious and cause TTP. Hopefully with this Website info, she will now believe me. Thank you, Bill.

Also getting hand and arm jerking when in bed, numbness in my hands, and muscle cramps are unending. I am tired all the time, and dizzy when just sitting. Sounds like I need to go back to my doctor and have some tests run. Thanks for this website, you may have saved my life!

my sister was diagnosed with ttp in 1991, she was in intensive care for 1 month . three times we were told she would not live. she suffered so bad, we rubbed her back for 30 days, trying to help with the pain. thank god she survived. the doctors told us it might come bak in 1 year , 10 years,or never. as aresult of this she ened up with fibermagia. two years ago she developed a brain anurisoum, she had two coils placed in the brain.. she was given plavix. one month ago she got ttp again , we got her to the hospital and she passed the next day.the systems were not the same as before. my sister was 48 years old.

I am a 55 yr old male who has had 2 heart attacks due to artery clogging. Been taking Plavix since my last one 8 months ago. Have had rectal bleeding ever since. Now I may have anemia since what used to be an easy walk feels like I’m gonna have another attack. My hemoglobin is under 12 and I can’t even make the bed without getting tired. I was concerned about being on a statin but I think I missed the actual culpret. I think it was actually Plavix.

I was treated for unruptured brain aneurysm feb 2011.I was on plavix for 7 months after surgery. I started to have super menstrual periods. I was losing 3 times the amount of blood i normally shed.I developed anemia.its been 2 years since brain surgery and i have had anemia 3 separate times. I have overwhelming fatigue and its taking forever for my blood to become normal again. Plavix is dangerous but i may not be alive today only for it..Fish oils have excellent thinning properties and no side effects which i am taking regularly.

I was accidently given samples of plavix instead of antibiotics. After the mistake was caught I was told to stop taking them. Then my spleen infarcted then my lung. I spent 28 days in a hospital recovering.

Elderly 88 yr old father put on 75mg plavix and to continue 15mg xarelto after DES stent in middle of March. April 28th he was hospitalized due to extreme lethargy and appearing jaundiced (skin). Hemoglobin was 5.1. Critical! GI, Hematology and Cardiology all assigned. Hematology found normal iron, white blood cell and platelets. Kidneys normal, slight dehydration. Became anemic due to excessive blood draws. Two blood transfusions later and injection of procrit. Home after 5 days in hospital, hemoglobin back up to 7.8. Cardiologist does not want to make ANY changes to medications. Outrageous! Three days back homel, first checkup after continuing Plavix and Hemoglobin dropped to 7.4. Now doctors have said likely upper GI bleed due to meds or just med problem of two powerful blood thinners at same time. How many actually have upper GI bleeds on Plavix? No one has said anything about TTP. Near ready to call a lawyer to save my dad’s life!!!!!!! But what is alternative to Plavix? Is he a ticking timebomb with nothing?
