Since December 2005, approximately 100,000 hernia repair patches have been recalled as a result of a defect which could cause the plastic ring inside of the surgical mesh to break.  This could result in serious internal injuries and possibly even death.  Many individuals who experienced problems after a hernia repair surgery may not be aware that their complications were caused by defective mesh.  The recall lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are providing free consultations to help determine whether hernia repair problems were caused by the defective mesh.

>>INFORMATION: Hernia surgical mesh recall lawsuits

In December 2005, March 2006 and January 2007, C.R. Bard, Inc., and their subsidiary, Davol, Inc., issued recalls for certain models and lots of their Composix Kugel Hernia Patch.  The surgical mesh contains a plastic memory recoil ring which could break under the stress of surgery, leading to bowel perforation, chronic intestinal fistula or death.  The hernia mesh recall applies to the Oval, Large Oval, Extra Large Oval and Large Circle models.

>>INFORMATION: Composix Kugel Hernia Mesh Recall

At the time of hernia surgery, most individuals are unaware of the brand name or type of mesh which is used, much less the exact model or lot number necessary to determine if their mesh has been recalled.  In addition, when hernia repair problems are encountered after surgery, many individuals do not fully understand what caused the complications, but rather simply know that they required another hernia surgery.

SURGICAL MESH RECALL LAWYERS

While some patients have received recall notices, many individuals are unaware that they have the defective and recalled hernia mesh.  The hernia mesh lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are investigating lawsuits against the manufacturer for failing to properly test their product before placing it on the market.

Symptoms or signs of problems with the surgical mesh could include:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal tenderness or pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abnormal bowel movements
  • Distended abdomen

If any hernia patients experience unusual or unexplained symptoms after repair surgery, they should immediately consult with their physician.  Possible tests which could be done to determine if problems after hernia repair surgery are caused by failure of the Kugel hernia mesh include:

  • Lower plate xray
  • Barium swallow or enema
  • Reverse imaging CT scan

If hernia repair problems have been experienced, our legal team can review the circumstances surrounding the injury and evaluate whether a recalled surgical mesh could have caused the complications .  If you, a friend or family member have experienced complications after a hernia repair surgery, you can speak with one of our attorneys to explore your legal rights and determine if you may be entitled to compensation.  Request a free consultation.

I got operated in 2004 for several ventral hernias in my abdoman area. After the surgeries, I had complications that eventially ended up in the removal of the mesh patch my doctor put in. I don’t know what kind of mesh patch it was for sure. Should I contact my doctor to find out what kind it was?

I had a hernia repair in 1996-97 its in my records, they installed a mesh, I later had to have another hernia repair in 2006 on the same side the mesh had failed, and due to all the scar tissue from the previous surgery this last one has left more after affects. Whereby if the surgery was done with a correct mesh in 97, I would not have a need to under go a second surgery. Is there a way I can find out what was used, it was done a military hospital, and I know the Gov. contracts specific materials, did Kugel have the contract at the time for the mesh??

I had a hernia repair in March 2003. Three weeks I had to have another operation because of an infection. As a result, I was treated with an antibodies from April until August. I am having to live with pain everyday day.

Could this be a result of defective mesh? I would appreciate any reply.

I would like to find out more information regarding the failure of surgical mesh. My entire thorasic and abdominal wall was replaced by mesh. I have had vast medical problems since these procedures were done. I suffer from many seroma’s that have had to be removed since I have had the mesh in my body. My abdominal area is extended and I have had many infections. I have constant pain and many health related issues. The hernia problems are still present as the mesh has failed. What can I do and how do I find out what type of mesh was used?

KC, your doctor should be able to tell you what type of mesh was used, or you could order the surgical reports. If you wish to contact our office, we would be happy to review this with you further.

They cant find the reason for my pain,Ive been to their pain clinic & they tried to help with radio waves also steroids& it didnt help. They cant find the right nerves since Ive been repaired so many times. They want to keep trying but I have enough pain allready. I work with this pain ,I have to work! They used the PROLENE HERNIA SYSTEM on me four years ago.[ so far no recall on the one I have yet] I cant keep hurting this way!

My son had his right side hernia repaired in 2004 and has had no significant problems. But in 2005 he had to have the other side done and his Doctor had moved away. So another doctor did this side. It has been a complete disaster from the start. He is in constant pain and if he trys to work or do anything physical it gets much much worse. At times he can’t even hardly walk. He went to one specialist and said the mesh was too large to take out and it was rubbing or irritating a nerve. Can anything be done to help him. A young man of 23 shouldn’t be doomed to this pain and agony. Lloyd R. Howard

my dad had hernia surgery on June 3rd, 2003 in which they put these mesh patches in him. The night he got out of surgery he got a temperature of 106 degrees. 2 weeks later he had another hernia surgery to remove the mesh but he still didn’t get better because of all the infection. On July 7th, 2003 my dad died when I was only 16 years old because of these patches. Do you think I have a good case?

    Rusty,

It is necessary that we speak with you to obtain some additional information if you wish to to review this situation involving your father. Since your father passed away over four years ago, the statute of limitations may bar your ability to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit. With additional information, we may be able to help you determine whether a claim can still be pursued. Please contact our office toll free at (800) 522-0102 or request a free consultation if you wish for us to evaluate your potential claim.

  • Rusty Smith says:

yes it has been 4 years since my dad died but since these patches were not found to be defective and recalled until december of 2005 wouldn’t that negate the statute of limitations because no one knew these patches were any problem back then?

  • Rusty Smith says:

I have the doctor and nurse’s notes and he had 3 of the large oval kugel mesh patches inserted in him and he developed intestinal fistulae because the ring broke in the mesh and stabbed his intestines and an abcess formed inside his stomach. The doctors told us my dad was the sickest man in the hospital and they had no idea what was wrong with him.

I had repair done in Aug. 2002. I had some kind of mesh with some sort of metal.I’ve had nothing but problems. Swelling, fevers, stomach pain, a discharge from my right side of my lower stomach, right back pain. The discharge is my concern. It has a very unpleasant smell. I have no clue where this is coming from. It leaks out of an old scar on the right lower part of my stomach. Then I get a hot spot that bleeds and is sore for quite some time. My doctor won’t even see me when I call for an appointment.I did not know what he put in me until I got sick and had to go to our local hospital. Do you think this is worth worrying about?

My wife had open hernia surgery 3 months ago. She is now experiencing abdominal pain, sometimes severe. The Surgeon totally brushed it off, saying that it is “impossible” that this is related to the surgery. Reluctantly he’d be willing to see her in a week, though the issue seems to require a more urgent response. Is there any point of seeing this Dr. again, or do we find another Dr. to diagnose the problem?

I had hernia surgery in April 2007. The mesh was in about 6 weeks in that time I had a seroma which was drained once or twice a week, I then
got and abcess and had to have the mesh removed and had another material put to replace the mesh, had to have that material removed also. I now have and open wound on my stomach that will not heal.

I had hernia surgery in August, 2007. I ended up with a fistula which caused a puncture in my bowel. After another 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital with nothing to eat or drink and strong doses of antibiotics, I had to have another surgery to remove the mesh patch which caused the problem. My surgeon used Proceed Mesh (Ethicon) I am still having problems with pain, bloating, nauseau, etc. nearly 6 months later. The surgeon has been nothing but helpful, but cannot figure out what is causing my problems. Has this type mesh had any recalls? Thank you.

  • M. Medina says:

Had a Ventral Hernia Supraumbilical incision repair (not lapraoscopic)done in Sept. 2007. Ventralex Mesh was implanted. Less than two months later severe abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements, several trips to doctors’ offices (including emergency room visits), xrays, lab tests, etc… before getting an appointment to see the surgeon who performed the repair. Had CT SCANS done then told it was a recurrent hernia (within 2 months!?). Post surgery, I was told by surgeon the mesh was very strong and recurrent hernia unlikely. ‘I only want to do this one time’, is what he said.
Now he says, I’ll have to undergo a second surgery to repair to the same exact area and he may need to use a larger mesh.
Not satisfied with this response. Went to a second surgeon, very detailed and thoroughly went over my records and CT SCANS (something the original surgeon did not do). Second surgeon suspects technical failure but won’t know for sure until he performs Lapraoscopic on me. He said if the mesh needs to come out he will do so. I’m scheduled in two weeks. Do I have a potential claim against first surgeon for loss of wages, pain and suffering, not being able to operate my part-time carpet/tile cleaning business, or enjoy family activities, the list goes on… Your advise is appreciated.

This is what has happened to me. I was a very athletic, healthy, energetic woman with no history of medical problems whatsoever ok? Then in 2002 I was rushed to emergency and admitted to hospital for two days, hooked up with morphine and the works because of Right side pain. They did every test imagninable to rule out appendicitis, hernia, and anything else. Never came back and told me they found a hernia on the tests taken, but I guess hmm, That could happen. AFter I stayed there for two days I was sent to a surgeon (Dr. Bruce Masselink)who saw me for two seconds, told me to cough and said oh, you have a femoral hernia. I had no idea what that was, but he said I need to have surgery. After I went home I kept feeling to see if I had a lump, and nothing, but I”m not a doctor yet stil a little skeptical. Went ahead and scheduled the surgery, had right side now (ingunial) hernia repair. A month out (waited to see if the pain would subside) I became more uncomfortable on my right side pelvic area and had excruciating pain. Wen to my normal visits and was told it was normal. Time went on and I got worse, At the time I had a great job and great insurance. Continued to go back and he finally decided to do an exploratory surgery to remove the mesh. Flat mesh (3×6) Prolene. Before I had the exploratory surgery I went in for right side complications still, and he noticed that I had a hernia now on the left side. Now you can just imagine what is going on in my mind. We did the left surgery before the right exploratory and everything went fine. Now back to the right side. He went in did an exploratory, I went home and about passed out because of how swollen I was. I figured it was just from the surgery, but still said omg, this doesn’t look normal. Guess what?? 5 years later that swelling is still there, and hurts to touch it even lightly. Now, after the 2nd exploratory I’m consistently going to doctors about my problems, rectal bleeding, when I had a bowel movement it felt like my insides were ripping out, and the list goes on. I had embarrassing tests (rectal) only for them to say oh, it’s nothing. So I continued suffering, and now I am becoming more depressed because no one seems to understand what is going on with my body, and not listening to the one person who knows her body more than anyone, and knows that it is normally healthy and strong, and that is me. Anyway, this went on now for a couple of years, tests, doctors appointments, now I have lost my great job of 7 years because of this. Finally in 2005 I go in and have another surgeon do another surgery on the right side. He said it was all messed up in there and did what he could to loosen entrapped nerves and the rest. Now it is 2008, I still have the mesh in the left side (bard mesh flat) and supposably the mesh was removed from the right side. When my original surgeon did the 2nd exploratory surgery he told me that he had to go around to my back to untrap nerves and remove mesh that had traveled back there, but when another doctor came in he changed his story. He told me this after I was in his office consistently complaining of back pain right after the 2nd surgery. I said this is weird, why does my back (lower right) hurt so bad. Then, a couple weeks later a test revealed that I had some fluid in my back. Primary physicians nurse told me it was an infection in my back, and my surgeon was ignoring it, and she went on to tell me that I should sue. I still ignored it hoping it would all go away. Now this is the 2nd mysterious infection I had because after the first hernia repair on the right side, I got an infection in one of my feet, on the toes which left me missing my big toenail. That was embarrassing because nothing like that has ever happened to me. Again, it was blown off as nothing. Now, when I am told I can go have a neurolgogist look at my back and drain whatever is in there, my surgeon says no. He denied me being able to go there and have them do that and I never understood why. Now I do. So that is my story and it goes on and on. Now I am jobless, have no insurance, in constant pain, on pain meds and can’t function without them, try to but feel like I am literally dying I’m in so much pain, and nothing is being done about it. Where is the justice and when is someone going to listen to us suffering that didn’t specifically have the kugel that was re-called, but other mesh used? We need compensation so we can get our family life back in order, and we need someone to listen to us now.

In 1993 I had a ventricul hernia surgery where mesh was put in. My stomach from that time on had a knot that stuck out like a sore thumb. In October 2005 I had a CTScan and it showed I had a ventricul hernia which was extremely large my hernia stuck out like a basketball from the rest of my stomach.I had this surgery May 2006 My doctor had to piece pieces of mesh together to cover the hernia. He said he had used over 300 stitches on the inside and I had 80 staples on the outside. Within a week of being released from the hospital I had several knots raised up in my stomach. I ended up in the hospital on June 14 where I was admitted for 7 days and had to have a drain put in because I had a huge abcess. June 28 I was again admitted to the hospital because of another abcess and was also hooked up to a pain machine for 14 straight days with it pumping Dilauda into me 24/7 as well as a drain and loads of IV antibotics I was in the hospital for 16 days this time. I again got another abcess which the doctor drained in his office to only have it filled back up within an hour or so.I was admitted to the hospital on July 28 for 14 more days again with lots of pain medications, drains, and loads of IV antibotics. I was again admitted to the hospital August 18 for another week with more drains, pain medication, and IV antibotics. I was admitted to the hospital again the middle of October for another abcess and again there were lots of IV antibotics and pain medication. I was there for a week. I was again admitted with two abcesses the first part of December where I was given IV antibotics and pain shots around the clock. I was again admitted in January 2007 for another abcess and then again in February, 2007 I was in the hospital again in July, 2007 with severe stomach pain which the doctors could not explain yet they said the CT scan showed signs of where an abcess had been shortly before. I had numerous emergency room visits but the doctors could not tell me what is causing my pain. I was admitted to the hospital this February 2008 and the CT Scan showed 2 more abcesses again I was treated with antibotics. I was given several medications that is suppose to help the pain the only problem is if I take the medication it helps but it knocks me out for days on end and this is no joke I will take the medication and then go to sleep for days on end.

I have had pain, iritation, obstruction and swelling since a hernia repair with PROLENE mesh in 1997. It doesn’t go away and I live with it.

I had a conventional surgery done on the other side and no problem whatsoever. I don’t believe the mesh patch is the best way to go for inguinal hernia repair.

No surgeon is perfect and no medical device is perfect. You people should quit your whining, stop trying to get money from these medical companies, and continue to live your life. There are risks associated with each and every surgery and your doctor should have explained those risks before you had surgery.
If you went to a bad doctor, thats your problem. If you were non-compliant after surgery, thats your problem. If most of you folks were not so obese, these hernias would not be an issue in the first place.

I had a small hernia repair in Nov of 06. Prolene mesh was used. Had increasing pain through out 07 until in Oct. 07 surgery was performed to cut the right inguinal nerve to eliviate the pain I was having. It did not work and by Jan of 08 I was so sick I could barely walk. Finally met a surgeon was that was aware of the problems associated with Prolene mesh and 3 days later the mesh was removed. In April I had another surgery and lost my right testicle because of all the damage done by the mesh. (loss of a testicle is described in the product warnings. Anybody’s Dr. tell them that? Me neither. )The Dr. also found more mesh and had to remove quite a bit of scar tissue. Now…as to the comments made by “Rick”…Ethicon has known about the problems with Prolene mesh for ten years. They have remanufactured it, repackaged it and promoted it to surgeons world wide. I know of guys in my little town that are having major problems with their mesh. Two of them have had removals of mesh and a testicle. Buddy…I’m not obiese…I used to ride road bike over 80 miles a week. Worked hard, made a good living….ALL OF THAT IS GONE NOW! Damn right I am mad AND I want compensation. I’m in 24 hour pain and can’t work in my profession. So have a little sensitivity and learn about what this mesh is doing to people before you spout off about things you have no knowledge of.

I had exploratory surgury that caused 5 hernias. Had to have biggest piece of mesh they could get to repair these. Home 1 day and knew the main one was missed. Toughed it out for 3 year and had it repaired 2 weeks ago. The surgeon started lapascopic, but had to open me up. He said the mesh has grown into my organs. Even my liver, which they were not suppose to go near because of a blood vessel mass there that could cause major bleeding. He said I had major scar tissue, but repaired the one hernia and left the scar tissue and the other mesh. He was very hard to get answers from when asked about the long term problems with this. Should he have tried to remove that mesh? He said he don’t remove scar tissue because it will all return the next day.

For your info it is more common for athletic and healthy people to get hernias. I had mine while working in an ER after taking care of patients just like you. Since, my pain is constant and I have had several very serious infections, my lower extemity on that side is always edematous, and my labs are coming back with an autoimmune response. Note no dicernable disease process. I am on my way back to the ER now. My kidey is infected ( Pyelonephritis ) and guess what side it is on ! Doctors are the #1 cause of death in our country for the average aged person. But when you are sick you have to seek treatment and pray you get someone who knows what they are doing. I have just been checking out this recall for the hernia mesh. I had a hernia operated on in august 07 and now have the same hernia that came back in march08. I do not know how to find out about what kind of mesh was used. The hernia is now 5.5 centimeters and I am still awaiting surgery in Victoria BC with the same surgeon. The original hernia was 3.5 centimeters.

In 2003, I had the Prolene mesh put in, and since then have had more hernias, an abcess, infections, mercsa infection, a hole/abcess 10 inches deep. I have been vomiting bile numerous times and go to ER alot for this as well as low blood pressure & high white blood count. I dont know if this mesh is a recalled 1 or not. I was told the mesh couldnt be removed, as the skin grew over it. I am very sick.

I had an emergency ventral hernia repair done in December 2002. After two days at home I was in tremendous pain, called the surgeon who treated me with antibiotics, stating that it was not uncommon for this to occur. I was told ity was probably a parasitic inffection. I have been in chronic pain in the surgical area since 2002, have been taken to the ER where the surgeon did not respond the last visit to the ER. I have now been three months in severe pain growing worse by the day. I made an appointment a few weeks ago to see the surgeon again explainging it was an emergency. I was told I would have to wait until the 4th of December. Tonight I placed a call to the doctor, explaing the problem and the severityof pain, the huge distention of my abdomen, and fever and also told him I would have to drive myself the fourty milres to the ER if he would meet me, as the ambulance here does not cover that territory. He siad they would “probably” have him come into the ER in the morning, I should wait until then, unless, I felt the need to do so tonight, in which case he still would not be called untuil morning!
I am beside myself and am at a loss as to which way to go. I have lost my faith in this doctor at this point, but I need something doen with my stomach so I can try to resume a normal life again/

I had a inguinal hernia found in 2005… I had the surgery done in Dec. 2005 and now for the past year or so I have been getting pains where the mesh was put in. It sometimes feels like a wire screen scraping the bone on the inside of my leg right by my private area, Its’ very uncomfortable and also wakes me up threw out the night in pain. I am wondering if this could be caused by the mesh that was recalled.

Hi I am 20 years old, 5’7, and 125l/bs. I had a hernia removed at 8 months old..at the age of 16, the hernia returned and my Doc said that he needed to remove it. During surgery, he “discovered” scar tissue and decided to put mesh inside of my tiny body. While healing, It felt like the mesh was sort of balled up inside of me, and it felt like something was sticking me, but I didn’t ask any questions at the time because I thought it was supposed to feel like that. Now I am in constant pain, and my stomach looks like I was attacked by a blind ax murderer..to the DR, this was certainly not a repair and you should at least apologize for doing this to me..

Hello, I had a surgey for a hernia done 2 years ago,At the time i worked for some real cheap skate employers,I was a repair man for this co, i worked on their many 100 apartment buildings in L.A. They are rich, but did not supply their employes any insurance,So i was left to go to county try for the free surgery,(could not afford to pay cash)..Boy was that a mistake,,They have students there either watching or performing the surgery,,In this day and age you try to trust these kind of people, I guess i was stupid?
either way, i was back 3 or 4 times in the following months,
Told the pain in my side, the pulling on my nut and the smaller size of my nut was all normal. 2 years on, I still have pain in my nut and stomach, alot more when i have sex, Now im haveing alot of trouble with my haveing a normal crap… I really feel i have been butchered,,
I am in good shape always have been,, Put i feel like crap since my surgery,,
To any one in need of surgery look around get references.. my dad had the same surgey, Had a small hole made, was out the same day, and back to work a few days later,,He does construction, and is 65,
Please people get insurance, and always get a second opinion.
To all of you with very serious problems, Im sorry i am complaing.
guess i should feel lucky, some of your stories scare me,,
Good luck to all and hope you all get better soon

My name is Helena I live outside Liveerpool in England. I had to have an opration in 1996-1997 at Arrowpark Hospital Wirral Merseyside to have a repair of an incisional Hernia. Since the operation i suffered from severe pain, vomiting, diarrhea abnormal bowel movements and distended abdomen. Each time I was taken into hospital They put an nasle gastric tube up my nose and into my tummy. I had a drip put in in theatre as I had to have cental lines due to my viens being very bad. I also had a hickman line inserted into my chest to feed me food called T.P.N and all the Morphine for pain and Cyclizine to stop me being sick and a catheter as I was incontinent. This went on for years.

I was in and out of Hospital for 10 years with all the above symptoms I was went to sign up with a new doctor as my old G.P retired. My new doctor gave me a medical and checked out my Hernia which had grown and I told him about all he prolems I had suffered over the years as the Hernia grew bigger and bigger. iI was unsure what the doctor meant when he said I had no cough pulse in my hernia. I told him I felt like I was dying from the inside out, and confused by different doctors all saying I had different things wrong with me.

I was given permission to go on holiday with my husband and we went to Egypt. I was ok for the first 6 days then felt sick, I knew it was not anything that I had eaten and my tummy distended. When I started vomiting faeces my husband called a doctor who got me to hospital in Luxor I was rushed into surgery the surgeon came out to talk to my husband and said my Hernia had burst the mesh and all my bowel and stomache was gangrenous and that I was extremely ill. I was airlifted to Cairo. I was in I.C.U. and when I was strong enough and after being on the drip and antibiotics I was rushed to theatre for a second operation in two weeks. When I woke up I felt like I must be in hell I was on fire and screeming to my husband to help me. In Egypt they only give you Morphine on the amount of pain they think you are in.

I was air lifted back to England and landed at London and driven to my local hospital at Southport in Merseyside. My consultant Mr Anderson sent me for C.T scans and every test under the sun, thank God he did. I was rushed to the operating theatre were I had an 18 hour operation and put on life support machine before taken to I.C.U. My consultant saved my life and all the staff in I.C.U. and eventualy on the ward took good care of me. I lost all my bowel except for one metre. The scar tissue and adheshions were so bad combined with the gangrene inside me was the reason my operation took so long. I developed a blood clot on my lung and my tummy burst open again in two places I was told they are called Fistulas.

I will be on anti-coagulants for the rest of my life and the fistulas may never heal. I am stil in pain and unable to have a normal life ever again I am 48 years old and I now live everyday as if its my last. My food has changed for life and each morning I can not stop myself from worrying is today the day when the gangrene returns and the thought of it returning makes some days unbearable. This all happened because of a Hernia repair and what the mesh used to repair the Hernia had caused the symptoms to be hidden until my abdomen burst. I now live on disability and every penny counts I can never work again and have the treats that I once was able to afford.
Thank you for taking the time to read this I hope it helps people in the future.
    Helena.

Thanks Rose for your comments and the other participants who have experienced the pain my wife has and is going through. As far as Rick’s comments are concerned, don’t pay any attention to him (why is he even on this site any way). He sounds like a very unhappy, miserable person who ENJOYS belittling others. She is experiencing the same types of symptoms that many have described. Will take a copy of this to her new surgeon so he can evaluate – many thanks for the posts. He is suggesting going in laprascopically (sp?) instead of the C-section site that the previous surgeon went through and repairing another hernia that has occurred on her right side. Can anyone post on how their seromas and fistulas were determined (what test was run, i.e. CT scan, etc.) She also has knots and tenderness from her waist down, besides nerve pain from hernia site down to her knees.

My husband had Hiatal hernia repair Nov 1991. He has had two esophogeal tears in the last two years. The most recent caused horrific bleeding! The nurse told me about many types of mesh that have been causing these tears. The current DR said his mesh has twisted and shifted and not sufficient anymore. I understand this is probably not the Bard Kugel mesh, but we have the surgical report and do not know what to look for to find out if his mesh is recalled as well.

He has NEVER FULLY RECOVERED FROM THIS SURGERY.

The bruising was very bad and lasted for almost 3 months. The doctor told me that everything was normal.Since that operation,I have been experiencing severe numbness in my leg (from the hip to my foot) for several years.I had several large bone spurs removed from my L2,L3,L4,and L5 vertibrae in ’08.The Dr. said that was what was causing my numbness.Six months after that surgery, the numbness has returned.I was wondering if this condition could be caused by the mylar mesh patch I had implanted in ’93.I am also experiencing pain and tenderness around the surgery site now.If anyone has had any of the same symptoms Please reply….P.S.Mr.32 (Rick), I have to agree with Amanda (#39) ,what you said just sounds ignorant,Are you a doctor???If you are I feel sorry for your patients (if you have any).I’m 48 now and I am definately not obese. If you have never had any of these symptoms you need to send your comments to a website where there may be others like you,and leave the people that have delt with the pain and fear of not knowing what is going on in our own bodies to discuss this together.Thank You all for taking the time to read my comment…Jeff from HazelGreen,Alabama…

However weeeks after the surgery I noticed the bulge and experienced the pain. The surgern said I developed another hernia. (This was the original hernia.) I had another surgery three weeks after the first and at present I’m still experiencing pain.

I had reconstruction surgery and a tram flap was used the doctor had placed a prolene mesh in my abdomen. I have had a wound that opens and closes periodicaly since that time till a few weeks ago when it abcessed. I went to the doctors and he sent me to a surgeon that said the mesh was the source of the problem and that it may have adhered to my bowel or intestines. Thank God that instead of being adhered to anything the mesh was balled up and laying loose in my abdomen. I have seen reference on the internet that this prolene mesh comes with an insert that warns doctors of possible infection related to the mesh. I have suffered for 3 years because of this and now owe medical bills because of this. If the doctors are warned of this why is this mesh being used? I was never told of this warning did not I have any rights to know this before the orginal reconstruction surgery to make my own decision on this?

On 9-20-09 I took him to the local hospital after doing a Ct scan they found bleeding at one of the repair sites and several pulmonary embolisms(blood clots). He was admitted into the hospital the doctors placed a brace around his waist i guess to stop the bleeding. He had a hard time breathing through the night he was in consist pain no painkillers were given to him. The next morning the nurse sat my father up in the chair for an hour and father was crying and said he wanted to go home. upon getting my father up out of the chair he had a focal seizure and died. I never realized that a hernia repair would take my father from me. if only things were explained better, Doctors are not god. My father died in the hospital where i work as a nurse.

IN May12, 2000, I was operated for inguinal hernia in which I implanted a mesh (Prolene Mesh). After a while i was taking a series of health problems, chest pain, headache and migraine with sinocitis, hipertention and testicular pain. Because of these pains since 2004 have not been able to work. In March 2008 I went to the doctor again and this recurent and found to have had more surgery and I put another mesh than the one I had was worn out. Today I am still with the same symptoms which prevents me from returning to work.

I have a friend that had 2 hernia repairs performed at one time. Since the surgery, he has had many health problems some of which include problems eating, severe pain in side, back pain. He recently was treated for kidney stones. Could the pain be the hernia repairs? Also, he has lost a tremendous amount of weight (40 pounds and continues to lose). He is not a person that pursues issues, however; after reading the comments and the defects with this product coupled with knowing a few of his health problems, I as concerned that he needs to check more throughly on this problem. Would you advise if he should see another doctor and do the doctors cover for each other even when they know there is a protential health risk?

I had a hernia repair with scar tissue removal and abdominoplasty in 2002. Pus still rupturing from naval and pain in abodomen and side. Continual infections all over. Could this be staff? Have reported to the doctor numerous times but they have done nothing. Now they want to do exploratory surgery to ‘clean it up.”

I had a left hernia repair in about 1999. Don’t know if I had mesh. I had another in about 2003 with mesh. I have had some pain on and off since that time in lower left groin, usually when my colon is seems to be full. I got the shock of my life when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer this last July. Caught it in the early stages. Decided to have radical prostatecomy in late Sept 2009 to totally remove the prostate. Open Surgery had to be aborted after surgeon opened me up from belly button down to pelvic bone because the previous hernia mesh had become attached to the bladder and surgeon could not move bladder out of the way to remove my prostate. Last week I had to have a seed implant brachtherapy radiation procedure done to try to eliminate the prostate cancer. Who knows, this mesh could also be attached to my descending colon or even the rectum. So this mesh can cause other problems down the road for people who have had it implanted. Beware if you have open surgery on lower abdomen for prostate, bladder or even colon issues!!

I was wondering if anyone had a umbilical hernia and then had a epigastric hernia ? I had my gallbladder done and then about 6 weeks later or less I had the umbilical hernia. Then In March of the this year the epigastric hernia came out!! I could feel it although I was on Lortab 10/500 for a broken foot. I just hope that I can figure out what is causing my trouble. I feel like my gut is hard as a rock. I have what I call the screaming pupes most of the time and diahrhea the other. I hope to talk to the Dr tomorrow.

I also have had sever stomach pain, and iritation on the left side on my genital, penis area since the surgery. I think that I may have an infection of some sort, because these symtmes did not come about until after my surgery. I’ve been suffering for a while. Has any one else had these symptoms?

I have had these surgeries cause the pain has not gone away since i recieved my hernia in April. My pain has continued and gotten worse in the last 8 months. I am scheduled to have the mesh removed on Febuary 5, 2010. I have had to be on pain pills continuely since before my first operation. I can hardly fuction as a human being. There are times that i have to have my wife help me up off the couch or out of bed cause of the pain, even to get out of the vehicle. I am personally getting really tired of the pain. Thank you, same thing, at least very close and I have had this stuff in me for over 10 years and I dont even know what kind or any related problems like the loss of a testicle and I have been having problems for years. No Dr. wants to take on the responsibility of a screw up on a double hernia along the intestine that should have had the part with the two hernia bulges cut at both ends and sealed it up. No problem I have researched it. I’m no Dr. of coarse but I know when something is really wrong and I don’t care what did it and assign no blame to anyone but at least fix it.

My name is Heather, my mom had several surgeries done at once. One of them being a hernia surgery. This was about ten years ago. In the past month she has had to have 4 blood transfusions. The Doctors at the hospital have told her that they don’t know what is wrong with her. The first time she was admitted, her eyes had no color and her tongue was white from all the blood loss. The second time, She passed out in the bathroom after loosing over half of her blood through her bowels. I am desperate to know if anyone else has had any similar problems. The hospital releases her after they give her the transfussions and tell her to come back if it happens again……. This has become extremely difficult to grasp.

I CANT HOLD MY BABY SOMETIMES BECAUSE THE PAIN IS SO BAD AND WHEN IT COMES TO ANY RUNNING YEAH I PAY THE PRICE LATER THAT DAY IF I TRY TO PUSH MY SELF AND SUCK UP THE PAIN. I AM 30 YEARS OLD AND CAN NOT EVEN GO TO THE BATHROOM BECAUSE IT HURTS SO BAD AND IT TAKES TWO WEEKS BEFORE I CAN EVEN TRY TO GO. I have had incisional hernia repair in April 2008. the surgeon put in a mesh, hernia, prolene according to the hospital papers. In nov of that same year I had surgery for the same thing, except this time the mesh was wrapped arround my intestines. So the surgeon unwrapped it and put in another mesh, hernia, prolene. All was going well, until April 2010 I was at work in excruciating pain. I went to the hospital and the next morning the surgeon did surgery and the same thing. It was wrapped around my intestines. This time he did not put in a mesh. Oh, and this time I had a double hernia.

Please … I am worried about my sister. she had hernia surgery 3 weeks ago,. she has a hard area around her surg. site and has been in excruciating pain since. Her surgeon told her to not come back to him, to go and see her family Dr. and vice versa, her family Dr. tells her to go back to her surgeon. I have been a nurse for 36 years, and I know there is something very wrong with her surgical site. It. is hard as a rock all around it, and she is in constant pain. Our so called doctors here are just very unconcerned, as they don’t know she has someone on her side who will make sure they don’t just keep giving her the run around and so forth. She has even been to our only ER here where we live, and the ER Doc refused to as much as even look under her bandage and look at her incision. It is really disturbing to think we are living in an area where so called doctors could be butchers and just dont care and get away with it with legalities !

I had a hernia surgery in september 2003, 4 months after my fifth baby was born. I had gone through my whole pregnancy with a huge bulg where I had a previous c-section. The doctor used a mesh not sure what kind I was in and out in one day. Went to the doctors a week later because it was leaking yellow fluid. needless to say I was put in the hospital operated on spent 10 days on intravenus antibiotic. the wound was left open to heal from the inside out and I had to use a vacume pump for a good month to suck the infection out. I was really sick and I had a newborn to take care of. It bothers me from time to time and its a ugly scar.

I had hernia surgery 5 months ago. Before the syrgery, my bowel movements were normal but now have chronic constipation. MY MD sent me for a colonoscopy which did show diverticulosis, so every doctor I see blames it on that condition, but I probably had it previous to my lingual surgery, but bowel movements were normal for a few months before, as I would actually feel the intestines as the bowel traveled through it.
Anyone else have this problem?… and was it solved and how?

After having 2 hernia repair surgeries, one in 1996, and the other in 2003, I started to have symptoms again for the past 2 years. I was told that what was bothering me was an accumulation of scar tissue possibly bending and twisting my intestines, or even causing temporary incarcerations. Well, on May 13, 2010, I was admitted to the hospital as an emergency surgery patient, and when I woke up in intensive care I was told that I had turned septic, my white blood count was over 10,000 and a large portion of my intestines were gangrenous, along with my appendix, a portion of my stomach lining and some surrounding muscle tissue. While in surgery my kidneys began to fail and the doctors didn’t have much hope for me. But here I am almost 4 months later here to tell the tale, although it’s not over yet. Even after 3 surgeries so far, I’m not done with restoration and complete repair yet. The surgeon told me that the type of mesh used is not longer available, I would like to see if this was caused by the above mentioned defective mesh.

My daughter in 2008 had an inguinial hernia sugery laproscopic dont
know what kind of mesh was used. In march 2010 she was having pains after going to ER they did some tests and came back saying they didnt know what it was but she needed emergency surgery and we are admitting her to the hospital the next morning at 5am was her surgery when the performing doctor came out he told us the metal recoils that were used to hold up the mesh had collapsed and embedded into her stomach lining, causing it to close off her bowel, they removed two metal clamps and the part of the stomach ling the cllamps were embedded in,and oh by the way we took out her appendix while we were in there. she spent 6 days in the hospital recovering its been 8 months and shes having problems again, the same kind of pains she was having before the 2nd surgery. We have taken her to her family doctor no one knows what is going on we have had x rays, CT scans, gynocologists blood work, I requested a copy of the x-rays because my daughter said the x-ray tech was asking her weird questions about having metal
in her underwear. when i took the disk home and put it into my computer I found a big shock 20 metal coils eveywhere in her groin
and abdominal area also six staples. I dont know what they have done to her and Im very frustrated about the findings. The performing
Dr. did not tell us he was putting any more coils back into her he said it was a absorbing mesh that would absorb into her abdominal wall. Ive been reading about all of the mesh recalls and wondered if it was possible if this was that one, or if it could be another one that should be recalled? My daughter has ultrasound and also GI tests in
the next week, and an appointment to speak with the performing surgeon of her 2nd sugery her 2nd sugery was not laproscopic and the 1st surgeon was a partner in the same office as the 2nd? what should we do? My husband and I ,Where should we go from here?
We feel that are hands are almost tied!

First of all the surgeon said that my nerves are trapped by the mesh and scar tissue be on the right side there is swelling like a hump and on the left side it is flat. He also said there is another hernia on my abdominal wall. I go back on thursday to find out what the scans show and my blood work because he was needing me to come in right away so I know it isnt good news and I am hoping he has found the problems that I am having and I pray he will be able to fix them. I will update ya’ll further once I find out exactly what he has found from the scans and blood work. I also was wondering if anyone else is having pain in the right pelvic and vaginal area from a previous surg for an inguinal hernia repair and if they have pain under the right rib and any lumps in those areas like I have becuz so far no answer on the lumps yet. Good luck to everyone and please keep me posted if you find out anything that could be useful. I think people would be better off not going to their doctor. !993, I went the doctor as I was extremly stopped up. He talked me into a colostomy. After I got home my left testical swelled to the size of A goose egg. this condition persisted for a year or more ( I thought I had cancer). The doctor said I probably got hit there and it wasn`t afault of the colostomy op. anyway, he operated and sort of fixed the nut problem. Later–2-3 years the incision for the colostomy was pushing out, so Iwent back to the doctor , A different one this time. He put one of those meshes that fold out inside. later my stomach was destended somewhat so I was aways tighening my belt to try to hold it. This went on for year, give or take. One night at work I got very sick to my stomach and was throwing up, was very sick and went to emergency. they said I probably had stomach flu.next day–went to the hospital. the surgeon doctor determined I was stopped up permantly and I would have to be operated on. He installed another mesh after getting me unplugged. It covers most of my abdomen, now I don`t have the use of my stomach muscles(six pack) and my stomach looks like I have 1/2 A basketball inside. The last operation was in 2002. I am living with everything as it is now, afraid to have anything more done by A doctor. December 2010. Iowa

I have been inn pain since the first one. The doc didnt know why I was in pain. Two months, lots of pain meds, and doctor visits every week the doc said I had developed a hydracele and would have to have surgery to fix it. So I did. But didnt change a damn thing. Still severe pain in the same spot. Lots of nerve blocks and steroid shots later, that did NO good he said that i had a entrapped nerve and would have to go again under the knife. Fine whatever, just get me out of pain. So he cut the nerve so that I would not feel the pain anymore. Guess what, Did NOTHING I still feel the pain in the same exact spot. More nerve blocks and steroid shots later again, he said that the nerve that he just cut was entrapped down farther and he would have to go in and take out the mesh, free the nerve, and put mesh back in. So my dumb ass let him. STILL HAVE PAIN TO THIS VERY DAY!!!!!! Some days are better than others, but i have lots of days that i feel like i got kicked by a horse, literally. Does anyone have any advise that could help me get fixed finally. I got 4 kids that i cant go out and run around with cause it would cripple me in pain

Hi! I knew there was a problems with surgical mesh shortly after surgery when I was in pain with movement that felt like tearing of my abdominal area. I was told by the surgeon whne I said I could feel sharp edges in my abdomen tht he had to insert 06 large patches to try to prevent reocurring hernias and adhesions from forming. I didn’t know in advance nor was I given any warning of what he might be doing or putting in side of me. He said the patches would melt into my body and not be any probllem. I was cut from my groin to my sternum for that surgery. Conviently, when I asked for my medical records from both the hospital & the surgeon, they couldnot seem to find anything pertaining to the surgery done in the previous 02 months.

I also had an allergic reaction with hives all over my body that lasted 06 months. The doctor I saw for that couldn’t find anything to get ride of those, just time.

I had two other hernia repairs following that major surgery. I still have pain if I move or twist wrong. Alos, when I drink something cold or eat strong flavored foods, I will sometimes get an intense pain in my abdomen. Their was intense soreness from a feeling like I was tearing inside that could last for days.

I met someone with similiar problems that her new docotor said was due to the mesh used in abdominal surgery. The surgeon had to scrape the mesh out of her abdomen because of its adhesion. She felt better after it was removed.

I had a bad attack of pain at work & extreme weakness and nausea. All I had done is tried to do some light exercising that morning. I wound up lying on the floor at work & being taken to the hospital by ambulance. They didnot know what caused the problem, but thought that maybe my intestines had twisted & became blocked.

When I told the doctor/surgeon what had happened. He just shook his head like he didn’t have any idea of what was going on or the cause. That was two years after the surgery and I was still having a lot of pain. He did not seem to care & brushed me off.

I never know when I will be hit with this again. It has been 7-8 years since the surgery. I am self-employed and do not have any medical insurance. It would be great if I could get some help to do something about this.

Since then I have experienced tearing pain when I go from sitting to standing, cannot do any shopping for over 30 mins without being doubled in pain. I am on heavy narcotics for the pain I am in daily and dr.s don’t want to believe it could be from mesh and adhesions since they don’t show on any test. I an so frustrated over this. When will they wake up that this mess is real and we deserve help and compensation for all the years of pain and misery?

I WAS ONLY AWARE OF THE MESH LAWSUIT BECAUSE A FRIEND TOLD ME THEY SAW THE COMMERICAL AND RECOMMENDED ME TO LOOK INTO IT. I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT I AM SUFFERING THIS MUCH WHEN MY OPERATION SHOULD HAVE FIXED THIS AND I NEVER THOUGHT THAT AFTER I TOOK A CRAP THAT I WOULD FEEL LIKE CRAP BECAUSE OF A FAULTY PRODUCT. I HOPE I GET THE RIGHT INFORMATION ON WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO FIX MY STOMACH PAIN AND HAVE NO MORE PAIN AFTER I CRAP AGAIN………..

They now have to go in and and fix another hernia an umbilical one where they will have to cut me in 3 places. I am so tired of this and I don’t know if the mesh was the one that was recalled the first Surgeon I had there office said they did not know so how would I find out. I just can’t keep going through all these surgeries…

I had surgery for my pancreatic duct in ’98. Mistakes were made & after a week recovering in the hospital, I began severly hemorraging. They operated on me 4 more times (abdominally) trying to find the source of the bleed. They placed me in a medical coma for 7 weeks while they searched. When I woke up I was on life support. I had rec’vd 100 pints of blood and 500 units of plasma related products. I am a medical miracle, of sorts. I spent 7 months in 2 rehabs unable to walk, where they tortured me by strapping me to a machine and cranking it up until I was standing. Next, my legs were pushed backwards until they were straight (while I screamed, sobbed & begged for them to stop). I was made to stand like that for several minutes. The Drs. convinced my family I did not want to recover while they came to me at night & said I was upsetting the other patients. I told them I had severe pain in my knees and hips but they did not believe me. I complained daily about the pain and was finally granted X-rays, twice. They said the results were negative. I was transferred out of the acute re-hab to sub acute and when I could pick my self up out of my wheelchair, I was able to go home. I had home physical therapy and my therapist kept telling me he didn’t understand why I couldn’t do what he wanted me to do . He knew I was trying, He asked me to go to a physiotherapist who sent me to someone else and so on & so on until an orthopedist took one look at me & knew why I couldn’t walk. He sent me to B’more to an traumatic bone surgeon. It seems bone had fused my knees and hips together while I was in that coma. The excess bone was chiseled away from both knees & both hips. Shortly therafter I was walking & driving my car again. I was disabled, I had neuropathy in both feet and legs (non diabetic) I lived in constant pain but I was on my feet and happy to be so. Then one day I woke up and I looked like I was 8 months pregnant. A hernia developed because A: I was operated 5 times in a row and B: I was told to use my recovered upper body strength to pick myself up out of the wheelchair so I could go home. In 2003 I had a 15 hour surgery at a very famous B’more hospital to put my organs back where they belong (and also remove an ovary, not related). I had a plastic surgeon and a surgeon insert a mesh “screen” because there was no muscle left to hold things in place. Fast forward to 2009 and oops, here we go again. A lump develops on my left side, GP blows it off and says it’s fat. *NOTE TO #32 RICK : ARE YOU A DOCTOR?JUST WONDERING WHY IT IS NECESSARY FOR YOU TO COME TO A WEBSITE LIKE THIS TO DEMEAN PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING. p.s. I am obese, not grotesquely, but 40# overweight is obese. I am facing another surgery and I have suffered with diaherria and pain. I can feel internal tearing and every time I eat even a small meal I am in pain. I had a colonoscopy last year that was clear but I wear a binder daily. I had the surgery scheduled last summer but my Mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she passed in Feb. I have spent months grieving in a way I never expected but now I just want it over with. This will be 30 something surgery (lost count). God bless all who suffer for they shall see the kingdom of God. I am grateful for my life and that my children nor my grandchildren did not follow in my path. I have paid a huge price for errors that were not of my making. I will find joy in my family and pray there is an end to this.

I am just checking to see if these patches or any of the recalled patches were used in late 2001. I had a inguinal hernia repair in which a patch was used. For the past 4 years I have had recurring diarrehea which sucks! I can’t think of any reason for this to start other than a possibilty of this patch issue – which has been all over tv and I just decided to look at symptoms. If there is an answer can someone please let me know. My life with three small children and a farm is impacted by the constant need to run to the restroom. It sucks!

I had my first hernia surgery in Sept 2009. In April of 2010 my dr had to go in and place a mesh screen in my stomach since my hernia had erupted again. I have had problems every since. In August of 2011 my Dr had to go in and reposition the hernia and the mesh screen since it had moved. 6 weeks later I had to go in and have the mesh screen removed since it is badly infected. The infection is so bad that my dr had to leave the incision open to let it drain. I now have to have my stomach packed once or twice daily. I am now waiting on a wound vac to be put in where the incision is to hopefully speed the healing process.

I had an apendectomy in oct of 2005, and the surgeon that done the surgery cut an artery. I was opened up from my breast bone to my pelvic the same afternoon, after laying in the hospital so long that they had to give me a blood transfusion before and then intubate me during so they could do the surgery to fix the bleeder. following these two surgeries I had to go back in Feb of 06 because the incision where the other two surgeries were done herniated. Again I was opened up from breast bone to pelvis and There was a mesh patch inserted 7″x 7″ , I’m not sure which one, but have had tenderness and pain, if I lift or try to use my stomach muscles very much, ever since. for the last two weeks it has really gotten bad and now my stomach looks like I am nine months pregnant and the tenderness which was only on one side covers my whole abdomen. When I originally went back for my followup after the hernia surgery the surgeon told me the tenderness was normal and would go away, but it has only gotten worse. I don’t know if there is anything I can do about any of this, but one thing I do know is that I want the mesh patch taken out.

Here’s my horror story. In 2005, I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. For the repair of this, a colostomy operation was done, and reversed 6 months later. I thought all was well. About a year later, incisional hernia develops on one of the incisions. Repaired with mesh. To make a long story short, I am lying in a hospital bed after my 5th hernia repair. This particular repair was done using a different method than in the past. Using laproscopy, All of the old mesh remnants were removed, and a different (and hopefully stronger) type of mesh was used to seal from inside the abdominal cavity. I went into the surgery thinking, along with the doctor, that the procedure would take just under three hours. Over 8 hours later, I was admitted into ICU, where I began an over week long stay in the hospital. The amount of pain that I have suffered during this procedure has been more intense that all of the others combined. So, here’s hoping for a fifth and final repair. I hope this one works, ’cause my resources have long ago been exhausted due to not only the medical expenses that I incurred during all of these procedures, but the financial losses due to not being able to work because of missed work were devastating. Something has to be done for those who need to have more than one repair to the same site.

I am 40 years old. In 2002 I was found to have Diverticulitis and hademergency surgery because of postules found and had to have 18 inches of my colon removed because of this. Then, in 2004 I then had bilateral hernia surgery in which I believe this mesh was put in. (I am currently applying for my medical records to be sure). Then in 2010 I had Gall Bladder surgery for the removal of my Gall Bladder. Ever since the Hernia Surgery (and especially the Gall Bladder surgery) I have had problems with abdominal pain, constipation, I had one partcular bought of extreme pain which lasted for days which was debilitating, feelings of the same pain and distension associated with my hernia as before. I was wondering if the complications fro the MESH (if it turns out it is the same MESH as described) can manifest this amount of time after the surgery?

I had herina repair surgery in 2008. Shortly after i started to feel a tearing, stabbing sensation when i go from standing to sitting. I now have to (or was to have) surgery for a separate problem but since the specialist found out that i had Prolene mesh used to repair ventral and umbilical hernias he refuses to touch me. He informed me that it would be extremley risky. So now what, am I supposed to live in pain for the rest of my life? Or keep trying drugs that cause me to have intoleralbe migraines, numb legs, hot flashes, mood swings..and the list goes on. I am still young..38..and planned on having children..will the mesh create more pain than I already experience. If i feel like im ripping now when I stand what will happen with a growing uterus/belly??

Hello all, I had my hernia repair surgery 12/6/11. I was told that I was having laparoscopy but once they inserted the scope they found that I had 3 hernias stacked one on top of the other. Because of their findings they had to open me up to do the repair. They used ETHICON – ULTRAPRO MESH. About a 1 1/2 week after surgery I started having the worse pain ever and it only got worse. It has gone from a tearing/stabbing pain now to include abdominal tenderness, nausea, and abdominal distention. Most foods make me nauseous except for cereal or peanut butter and cheese crackers; so that what my meals consist of.

When the pain started I went back to the e.r. and was admitted but they said that nothing was wrong. That they only found fluid around my liver on the ct scan. After my release I went to see the surgeon that perform the surgery and I told her about the pain. She looked at my abdomen and told me that I was fine and sent me on my way. Since then I’ve been admitted to another hospital. I was told by the surgeons that I should go back to the surgeon who performed the surgery so that person can scope my stomach. He said that I needed the scope but they wouldn’t do it because they don’t want to be held accountable if something is wrong, for something that someone else did. He said that with my history that scoping/reopening me up would be too risky.

I now am trying to find some one to help me. I spend most of my time balled up in pain. The pain medications that they have me on has NO effect on me at all and they are really strong medications (Oxycontin 80mg and Oxycodone 30mg).

It feels like something is grinding into my pelvic bone. I had a CT done. They said mesh does not look like it moved. I feel like no one will take me seriously and the pain is not getting any better instead it is making it really hard to function. Could this be the mesh that was put on the hernia? I know that is where the mesh is attached.

I had an umbilical hernia repair with laproscopic surgery and a mesh implant in August of 2011. Following the surgery I felt a constant tightness and pulling sensations in my abdomen, surrounding the site of the hernia. The tightness gradually evolved into discomfort, and I am now experiencing mild to moderate pain and tenderness in the area. The results of a recent CT scan were inclusive. My gastroenterologist has scheduled a colonoscopy to check for problems, but he is fairly certain that the mesh is the culprit. I also have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon who did the repair in another week or so. Are there any specific questions that I should be asking these doctors?

Like most people I turned to the internet for answers. I am day 9 from have a umbilical hernia repaired using a mesh implant. I left the hospital in with a level 10 pain, thinking that the next day would
be better. The pain is still as bad as it was when I came home from the hospital. The pain is unbelievable. The burning sharp pain in tummy especially when I stand from a sitting position or lay down. I feel like my insides or being torn apart. I go back to my doctor on June 13th for my 2 week visit. I called for more pain meds and told them that I was having a lot of pain but, there seemed to be no concern. I am trying so hard to try to figure out is this normal and will it go away. After having read so many of the comments listed here, I am now more concerned than ever. God help me if this pain stays. I can’t imagine going through another surgery, I just don’t know how I could manage to survive yet more pain than I am already in. I don’t know anything about my mesh, I don’t know if this pain is due to the mesh. I am not making any claims that my physician didn’t have my best interest at heart. I actually feel that I have a wonderful doctor. I am just concerned that something outside of me or my doctors control has happened. I may have not done anything here for anyone else but, I somehow gained comfort in knowing that all this pain is NOT just in my head, I am not alone. I pray for all of you, I pray that God will heal your body and bring you comfort. Thank You~

So when I found out I had another one on the other side in January 2007 I was’nt worried at all. To my surprise this was the worst experience ever first of all it looks as though I still have the hernia because there is a huge lump in my pelvic area, and the whole area around the lump including my upper thigh is numb all the time I cannot touch this area at all. The pain is still there. I’m not sure where to turn for help. My quality of life suffers because of this, I have to watch closely how I move around and playing with my daughter does not come easy. I would love to feel normal again.

I had a left inguinal hernia repaired in June 2011 by laproscopic surgery and mesh was used in the repair. After the surgery I experienced fevers and pain all the time. I returned to the doctor, Clark Gerhart, and he said another surgery was necessary to remove the mesh–this time an open reduction surgery. After the second surgery in OCTober 2011, I had severe pain almost all the time. I have had physical therapy, pain management and all sorts of tests and trials. The doctor finally told me he “may have cut the ilio-inguinal nerve”. What a mess—I have pain all the time. The only relief I get from the pain is when I lie down on the couch or in bed.I now have an appointment with a doctor at North Penn Hernia Institute i Lansdale, Pa on July 25th. Wish me luck!!!This has ruined my life for the past year!

Had inguinal hernia surgery in 1983 where Dr. said she had a problem during surgery and had to install mesh and transfuse 2 units of blood (I assumed she cut an artery). Had great pain for several weeks after surgery and chronic pain and discomfort for at least 2 years after the surgery. By 1985 or ’86 I was experiencing terrible allergies and muscle, joint and fascia pain and discomfort that was later diagnosed as fibromyalgia – which continues to this day. I always felt a connection between the chronic pain and the surgery but assumed it was from the transfused blood. Now I am connecting the dots and think it might be due to the mesh. I wonder if I can find out what kind of mesh was used then? and whether others might suffer fibromyalgia from surgeries where mesh was used?

A couple of years ago I went to a surgeon who ordered a CT and said there was “no problem” with the mesh and even showed me the pics of where it was.

Does anyone know if there has been any issue with Ventralex Mesh? I had an umbilical hernial repaired in 2010. After 2 births 11 months apart. Since then I have been diagnosed with a BUNCH of auto-immune issues including a pre-diabetic state. I am very athletic, 5’3″ and 105lbs. Diabetes (or any auto-immune issue) does not run in my family. I am horrified that this might all be related to the mesh. And I am terrified that no one will remove the mesh as there is no “more obvious issue” going on.

I had a bilateral hernia repair about 5 weeks ago and the past 2 weeks have been bad. I had about 1-1.5 weeks of feeling no pain; then two weeks ago I was having a lot of testicular pain with a bit of pain in my lower right abdomen; the testicular pain is gone but the abdominal pain has at times become very intense; and the last 3 days I have been having a gut wrenching pain throughout my stomach (all lower abdominal) on top of the lower right abdominal pain that’s quite intense; and as of this morning I have passed bowel about 10x in a few hours and in one case there was about a teaspoon of blood. Contacted surgeon and I’m seeing him tomorrow- I’m missing work without pay and I’m in a lot of pain and obviously this isn’t good….

It seems that most of the people that have experienced problems due to the mesh have been closer to their hernia repair dates than me. I had a small hernia in 2005 which I was told they had to insert mesh since I had a hysterectomy and gastric bypass in 2002 and 2003. Just recently I have started experiencing a ripping/tearing feeling in my abdomen. I was just found to have squamous cell carcinoma on my abdomen around my navel. The tearing feeling was slightly below that area so I thought it may have been due to the squamous cell carcinoma. I just had that excised last week and now I am experiencing more ripping/tearing (like being pulled over barbwire) above my navel. Could this be due to the mesh this far post hernia repair?

Since the surgery I feel my stomach has shrunk and don’t have normal bowl movements. My surgeon days it’s probably an intestinal issue, but I was fine before Surgery I could eat as much as I wanted or drink. I am 37 127 lbs now before surgery I was 135lbs. I believe most of the weight was muscle. I Feel weak at the core just depressing to know I felt better before surgery.

Now August and pain is back in 2 spots now. I have a feeling I am rejecting the mesh. Thing is, during this time I have developed severe arthritis like pain in knees wrists and hands, now back and neck to the point it hurts to climb stairs and hurts to go to work all day. I read a correlation between mesh rejection and autoimmune diseases like RA. would this be on my bodies reaction or mesh company related?

Scared of being cut again I get a new surgeon to look at me but appearntly from the same building and being at the same collages didn’t help he sent me for an ultra sound ended up getting side tracked by a cyst on my liver which lead to more test for something I could care less about, I’m in pain want answers and getting the run round, go to a diff hospital to be told I have chronic nerve damage and will forever be in pain and nothing they can do….. Is there any suggestions to get answers why so many years later my children can’t hug mommy cause her stomach hurts to much

I am wondering why Paretex mesh is not considered by a lot of law firms as a mesh that they do not deal with. My symptoms are no different then that of any other patient with any other kind of mesh. Prior to having ventral hernia repair I was a person who worked out 3 times a week, and now I am lucky to be able to sleep. I do not take pain meds, and cannot now because these types of meds cause the same issues I am trying to find relief from can be caused by these meds. I think if you google, or even go on to the FDA website you will see the warnings that Paretex mesh have. I have had to look high and low for a doc that could help me and you would not believe the doctor I found. First I had the repair done in 2010, at Emory, and 3 months after having the mesh put in I began to feel a lot of pain. During that time I had changed my insurance, and had to see another surgeon, and after doing a CT scan which is not really a scan that tells you any thing about the issues, I now this from being a Health Care Admin. From that point on things got bad for me health wise. No longer able to workout, and now I have serious injuries that I need to take care of asap. So the doc I found is in Daytona now, but he was a former Emory Head of General Surgery, but in 2009 when the powers to be changed at Emory and wanted to go back to the old ways of doing hernia repairs, that caused the doctor in Daytona to resign because they went back to the old way of doing hernia repairs. So I know that the old way was not the way for me, and now I am not able nor allowed to do normal things I use to do. So he resigned in 2009 because he did not feel it was ethical to continue doing hernia repairs the way they use to…So I hate calling attorneys when they announce that they handle hernia repairs, but only a certain, and you have to call over and over again, because I have a hernia mesh that they don’t handle but should reconsider, mesh is mesh, and mesh related problems are not just one type of mesh. I have done a lot of research on my mesh, and I know enough that the mesh I have is no different then other, it is just that there is no attorneys with the fortitude to take a chance. I am watching and at some point there will be a recall, which according to the FDA the Paretex mesh I have already has a warning, and one is death…not something I am willing to let go…..

For the last 3 months i’ve had a constant, sharp, stabbing pain. I see my doctor tomorrow, when i followed up with the surgeon (who retired a week after my surgery) he said it was good and the pain will pass. Day by day, the pain gets worse. The scars do not look good, they are almost dead looking. This is impacting my life horribly and sometimes it makes me think extremely irrationally. I need help.

I pray to God you’re not married! God help the poor soul who has to live with a selfish ass like you! In this world there are always people like you who can tell everybody what they need to do. Wake up fool! One day you will have your own pain! While you’re writhing in it, I hope the doctor walks in and says, “quit your whining!” You callous piece of humanity! I had hernia repair surgery in 2010, and have a Parietex Mesh. I also have the same symptoms as any other person, with hernia mesh complication, and the same mesh used in trans vaginal, or bladder sling mesh, which some are made of the same mesh I have inside of me. I have had problems for a while, and never knew until a colonoscopy done in November 2015. I have questions since I have not seen any legal information on this type of mesh, only in the trans vaginal, and bladder sling mesh. In my mind if the mesh is faulty in one type of use, then it is faulty in any other use. I know the FDA has made a warning about the mesh being defective, causing complication, and some cases serious death. I have adhesion that are wrapping around my colon, my belly is distended, I am always sick to my stomach, and my Gastroenterologist reluctantly admitted that I need to have the mesh removed. I found a doctor in Daytona that removes mesh, and will fix them without putting mesh in. I even got a good review from a patient in waiting room of his office. He is having to do a major surgery to remove scar tissue, repair colon at the twist. I am glad to know what is going on with me, but I am paying a high price on my life with having the mesh in me.

For starters I don’t see anyone on here asking how much money they can get or if they can get any at all. I do see people concerned if the mesh that was recalled could be The mesh that is in them and the cause of the pain and problems they are experiencing. What you said was not only out of line but rude and totally uncalled for. You have no idea if any of these people are obese and for you to state that was just down right rude and hurtful. I have had the hernia repair surgery ans my hurnias were not caused by my weight I weigh 110 pounds soaking wet. My hurnias were caused by laparoscopic surgery. I was told after the hurnias were found that they were the downside of that type of surgery. I had a Haital hernia repair on the 24th of August of 2016. I’m now going back in to surgery again do to bleeding inside. I don’t know what to do or say. I’m constantly in pain, I take percaset 10mg every 4/6hours. I’ve had 3 surgeries this year now this will be my fourth one. All this started after having a gastric bypass in 2014. I’m now severe anemic and had hypoglycemia that now turned into diabetes. Had 12 blood transfusions since October 2015. Weekly iron infusions. Any advice on what should I do. Please help.

I had three hernias repaired after a rotor tiller accident at a horse ranch. They put in both a plug and mesh over each breach. I was told this is a major surgery any hernia surgery is and that you will feel things from time to time its par for the course. So I don’t go in after any flair ups. I do have on both groin areas where it meets my legs a soft red area from time to time that emit fluid that smells strong. but I live with cause i know they did the best they could. When I do an exercise regiment it seems to not happens as often.

What did the attorney say about your case, I had the same thing happen to me, but blood is in my urine, they say from a kidney stone. I think it’s from the drainage bag incision from a year ago.

I also would like to know how far the lawsuit will go back. In 2011 my mom had a hernia repaired during her gastric bypass surgery. The surgery went well but she ended up with a fever and not feeling so good about a week later. After her Dr. informed me to take her straight to the ER we’re told she had to have emergency surgery due to a reaction to the mesh that was used. My mom ended up in ICU she had gangrene in her stomach from the mesh and they had to cut it out. My mom went through a lot from this, depression, kidney failure and bed sores from not being able to move around, I took a leave of absence from work when they sent her to a woumd care center in Fort Worth,TX. The look on the nurses & Dr.’s faces at the wound care in Waco,Tx & Forth Worth expresses that they didn’t expect her to live through it. Nurses would come when we were there to see the wound just because they had never saw a wound so large. They used the wound vac which is amazing once you get past the large hole in the stomach area. We spent lot of time praying to help with the depression and keep her spirit up so she would be motivated to do her physical therapy. My mom is an amazing woman, she ended up with dementia which I’m sure has something to do with all of which happened due to her taking a test a few montha before and scoring a 100 which I thought was a simple test but scored a 30 after going through all that happened. Happily to say my is still alive she doesn’t remember what day it is or who’s she talk to bit ahe can still cook for herself and remember our names… The ER told us if we had waited another day to bring her in she would’ve died.

Wow lil Ricky..such a big boy trying to hurt others feelings. Hope that made you feel better. You do realize something called mal practice? It’s there for a reason. Kinda like insurance..when you get in a car accident and it’s the other persons fault. But I’m sure you would probably just tell that person no,don’t worry bout it everything is ok…I got the bill for all my surgeries and new car and on and on. Yep you sound just like that person…yeah RIGHT!! You are probably first in line at the lawyers office ready to sue. So get off your high horse and realize that a lot of these ppl have suffered enormous pain, lost jobs and maybe worse yet…just want some answers!!

Hello Eulisica, my Mom had the hernia mesh, which was removed November 2016. From 2015-2016, my mom lost 100 lbs. The doctors couldn’t find anything wrong. She finally went to a doctor out of town (San Antonio) who did surgery to find the mesh had cause gangrene on her stomach. Half of her stomach was removed and the doctor said she wouldn’t have lived through Christmas if they didn’t find it. Now, I’m seeing all these lawsuits about Hernia Mesh.

My husband his first hernia repair and patch implanted in 2010, Strangulated and bowl resection hernia repaired with mesh in 2013, and another strangulated hernia and resection in 2017. The mesh that was used is FlexHD made by Ethicon. All were done in Arkansas at the Surgical Clinic of Central Arkansas.
Do you think my husband is a candidate for a law suit?

I had mesh put in me without my consent. I went in for a hysterectomy back 2000. I had a tumor on my left ovary bigger than a grapefruit, when I get out of surgery I find out about the mesh. No I didn’t have any hernia then. But I wound up having to have reconstruction bowel surgery thanks to the scare tissue. My bowels was blocked unknown to me, all at once I was throwing up my bowels, stomach being pumped. What’s worse is not knowing what caused it,is I missed my Daughter Graduating in 09. I know what Doctor preformed it,but how to make sure it was on recall. I moved outta the state it was put in me, about 8 months later. I still have different medical issues that seems to be linked to the mesh.

I had an hernia repair in 2007 and now I have another one in the same place, lower right side of groin. This one seems lower and I will eventually need surgery. Any chance the first surgery was done with a recalled mesh.

I had a hernia repair in 2007, I was only 7 years old then. But now 2019 and I am 19. I have been having a lot of medical issues, with kidneys and a lot of other organs, I had intisseption (IDK how to spell that) A few months ago. But it fixed itself I guess, then today at a doctors appointment I was told that it is a possibility that having the mesh put in in 07 could be why I am having all of these ailments. I just want to know what’s going on…I start college in a few months, and I need to be focused on school, and not feeling in pain all the time

in 2009 I had surgery for a large hiatal hernia mesh was used, now for the past 2 years I have been in and out of the emergency room, because my stomach is bulging i look like i am 9 month pregnant, its hard, i feel like a balloon that is going to pop, i have so much pain, i can’t bend over cause of the pain and i cant breath, my back hurts real bad, i regurgitate my food and drinks, i have chest pains, i can’t sleep more than 30 min at a time, its hard for me to take deep breath, some time i can have a little bowl movement sometimes i get diarrhea, most of the time i cant have a bowl movement for 3 & 4 days, sometimes i have a lot of blood that comes out after bowl movement, i am always real tired, i have gerd disease, i am having so many problems, the newest one is with no warning i have to pee so bad that i cant even make it to the rest room, i wont even go out in public cause i am so embarrassed with how big my stomach is, the worst part of all this is none of the doctors in the er room will even take the time to listen to me or run tests, so far 8 out of 10 of them told me to loose weight that the problems were due to being obese, which is the same thing i went through for 4 years prior to surgery,
