Veggie Booty lawsuit filed as source of salmonella found
The recent recalls of Veggie Booty and Super Veggie Tings have been linked to the seasoning used on both snack foods. The manufacturer, Roberts American Gourmet, Inc., confirmed this week that the spray-on seasoning, which is made with imported Chinese ingredients, was contaminated with the salmonella bacteria which has sickened children and adults in at least 17 states. Veggie Booty lawsuits are being pursued by consumers of the snack foods who suffered serious food poisoning injury and feel that they were let down by the company.

VEGGIE SNACK FOODS RECALLED
On Tuesday, it was announced that a Veggie Booty sample tested by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture confirmed that salmonella Wandsworth, the same strain of the bacteria seen in the recent outbreak, was present in the snack food. This appears to be the latest in a growing serious of recalls involving products made in Chine which are tainted, defective or otherwise dangerous. According to the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, nearly 20% of all products made in China for domestic consumption were found to be substandard in the first half of 2007.
The president and chief executive of Robert’s American Gourmet, Inc., Robert Ehrlich, claimed that he had been unaware that the ingredients used in the seasoning were imported from China. Veggie Booty and Super Veggie Tings are made under contracts with another manufacturer, but that will not absolve the company for breaching their duty to make sure that their snack food is safe and free of contamination.
A press release this week from Robert’s American Gourmet, Inc. indicates that the company now intends to work with their suppliers and distributors to establish protocols and quality controls for all of their snack food products in the future. Many parents who regularly gave their children Veggie Booty and Super Veggie Tings, question why the safety measures were not already in place.
VEGGIE BOOTY LAWSUITS
The first known Veggie Booty lawsuit was filed this week in federal court in New York by the parents of a toddler injured by the snack food. The 18-month old was diagnosed with salmonella food poisoning after he was given a bag of Veggie Booty by his parents on May 20. Salmonella infection can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. While most healthy adults recover in a few days, children, elderly and those with weakened immune systems are at risk of more serious food poisoning, which could even be fatal in some cases.
The food poisoning lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential Veggie Booty lawsuits on behalf of individuals who were sickened after eating Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks or Veggie Booty snacks, and required medical treatment for their illness. The manufacturer failed to live up to their obligation to ensure that the snack foods they sold were fit for human consumption, and they should be held responsible for the damages they caused.
