A nationwide green bean recall has been issued due to a botulism risk, which could cause serious and potentially fatal injuries.  The recall comes less than two weeks after tens of millions of cans of chili, hot dog sauce, beef stew and other meat products were recalled following several reported cases of botulism.  Although the two recalls are from two different companies, both appear to have been caused by manufacturing failures during the processing of the canned foods.

>>INFORMATION:  Botulism Lawsuits

The FDA and Lakeside Foods, Inc. announced the recall of 15,000 cases of 14.5 ounce cans of French cut green beans.  It is possible that the cans are contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria of botulism.  As of August 1, no illness have been reported and none of the tested cans have contained the toxin.  However, given the deadly nature of the toxin, the green bean recall could pose a serious health risk.

Cans impacted by the green bean recall include those with any of the following codes in the top line: EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECAB5217, ECB5227 or ECB5307.

The French style green beans are sold nationwide under a variety of brand names.  The cans of green beans may not have been properly processed and heated to eliminate the potential botulinum toxin.

Botulism symptoms could begin anywhere from six hours to two weeks after exposure to the toxin.  Symptoms could include:

  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle weakness.

The condition is associated with paralysis, which progressively moves down the body.  It often starts in the shoulders, then moves to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs and calves.  In severe cases, botulism paralysis  may impact the breathing muslces, resulting in death.
