Humira (adalimumab) is a “biologic” drug manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, which is part of a class of medications known as tumor necrosis factor blockers, or TNF blocker. Although other similar medications in the class contain warnings about the risk of nerve damage side effects, Abbott may have failed to adequately provide the same warnings for users of their medication.

Reports suggest that Humira side effects may increase the risk of central nervous system (CNS) demyelination, which can injure the myelin sheath. This may inhibit the conduction of signals in nerves and impair functioning dependent on the nerve that is affected.

Some potential health problems from Humira could include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Transverse Myelitis
  • Optic Neuritis or Vision Problems
  • Seizure Disorders

Although the potential for lawsuits over Humira are still being reviewed and evaluated, it appears that the drug maker could have provided better warnings about the risk of nerve damage from Humira. During clinical trials, at least three cases of demylination on Humira were reported, including two of which involved optic nerve damage, compared with no reports among patients taking a placebo. In addition, since the medication was approved, several reports of Humira problems have been filed with the FDA adverse event database involving neurological symptoms with Humira use, including reports of optic neuritis, which can result in permanent vision impairment.

I’ve been on humira for at least 4 years and last April my right knee went numb. Thinking it was a disk pinching a nerve down my right leg, they have me 3 cortisone injections in my back and said it would fix all my problems. Trouble was after the 2nd injection, my left foot went numb. Since then the numbness has crawled up to my knee on the left and mid- thigh on the right leg. For the last two weeks my feet will go cold like they’re In blocks of ice. Then the left one goes on to burn like fire. I expect it to burst open and have icicles fall out I haven’t mentioned the tingling , oh my gosh it’s like an electrical storm all over my body. I feel like I could shoot lightening bolts out of my fingertips. I have severe muscle weakness, the back of my head tingles. I haven’t even mentioned my vision trouble. Can’t see very well with my brand new contacts I just got in August. I have a nerve test and MRI but the neurogist I went to with these symptoms said he didn’t know anything about humira, come back in a month.

My husband was on humira for 2 1/2 years for psoriasis. He went to the doctor for anal pain and the tumor was so small that she said not to worry it was only a hemmoroid. 2 months later it was stage 3b analysts cancer. The ER doctors asked if he had AIDS or hepatitis and we said , “no! ” Then they asked if he is on any medication and we said,”Humira ” they said, ” that’s it!” He did the maximum radiation and chemo treatments which shrank the tumor, the next scan showed the anal cancer spread to his lungs with numerous tumors and to lymph nodes. When my husband had a biopsy on lungs the doctor heard he was on humira and he said, ” another one!” So it spread fast inspite of all the treatment. He died within 7 months. I am devastated, my life is destroyed, he was only 64, our children just started their own lives and we didn’t get to fulfill any of our empty nest dreams. Our daughter who is not married yet feels cheated that her father won’t be there to walk her down the aisle. Her grades have suffered as she is a senior in college and she was daddy’s girl and misses him terribly and is suffering emotionally and physically. His parents lived 25 years longer than he did. There was no reason for our lives to suffer this tragedy other than humira took him away, the warnings are not enough to make patients aware of the very real risk. We only get one life, Dennis loved life and wanted to live and see grandchildren. He, our married daughter and our future grandchildren have been cheated. Dennis was a bright spot in everyone’s lives that he met. We had over300 people wait in a snowstorm for an hour outdoors at the wake and they all said what a joy he was. Dennis never wanted restitution from anyone who wronged him all through his life until humira took it away, he wanted me to hold humira accountable.

No one can say what attorney to use or where to turn for help. I’m 46 was in clean bill of health before use Humira last 10/11 mos. I had plaque psoriasis on elbows and started this right way w hopes and vision and of clearer skin and now I’m down w blurry vision just got out of hospital few days ago w Transverse Myelitis and maybe Neuromyelitis Optica. I have never heard of any of this and I’ve had a stroke. I’m close 1 eye now just to write this, it’s awful! One Dr says it take time but I’ll make a full recovery or partial. I don’t knw what my future holds but one thing is clear I know 100% HUMIRA has done me this and it isn’t fair I can’t even hold my 7 year old son and know in my heart I can say this is going away and where does my future for us lay? It’s hard to see hard to eat hard to move and write this is hard. Humira needs to warn more Doctors of the Neurological Disorders it may cause bec if I had been told this by any of my Drs. I would have chose a different route and no Humira! They need to be held accountable and I plan on getting advice and move Frwd w this. I need more people aware of how dangerous these drugs that are being put into our bodies. We need Humira attorneys all over who deal with this especially where I live, we have very few! I’m close to New Orleans and Baton Rouge Louisiana. Anyone have any advice please feel free to tell me:) I’m on metholprednisalone high doses didn’t spell it right but hopefully I want have to take this but a few more weeks. The inflammation on my spinal cord is/was massive the Dr said. So with a few prayers, faith and meds… I hope to getting on a road to recovery!

My doctor prescribed Humira for me in order to treat my arthritis. I started taking Humira about 8 months ago. However, I quit taking it four weeks ago because my vision started getting blurry and I need more light in a room to see properly. Since I quit taking Humira my vision has gotten better and I’m able to read and see a little better. I even went to see my eye doctor about my vision issues. At the eye clinic I couldn’t read the eye charts because my vision was blurred. My doctor felt that I had dry eyes and prescribed some eye drops and told me to use a warm rag on my eyes twice a day. That didn’t seem to help. I am going back to see my eye doctor and discuss my vision improve since I stopped taking Humira.

I sought this information out as I am on Humira for the 2nd time. I have also been on iv infliximab a few years ago. I was led to believe it can cause any infection to worsen, and was taken off it after a number of months of prior treatment, because of infection related to Crohns disease. Once again, I am ready to report my vision problems which are becoming horrendous! I won’t take these drugs again, ever!
