Earlier this month, Smith & Nephew recalled the optional metal liner used with their R3 Acetaburlar hip replacement system, which can make it a metal-on-metal design. A number of different metal-on-metal hip replacement systems sold by several manufacturers have been linked to problems, and the Smith & Nephew indicates that the R3 metal hip liner has a revision rate that is higher than acceptable.

The hip replacement lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential claims for individuals who have experienced complications after receiving a recalled Smith & Nephew hip, or any other metal-on-metal hip replacement, including systems sold by DePuy, Wright Medical, Biomet and other manufacturers.

Metal-on-metal hip replacements have been found to release microscopic shavings of metal into the body as the metal parts rub against each other. This can damage soft tissue, cause inflammatory reactions, lead to bone loss or a loosening of the implant.

The Smith & Nephew hip recall was issued on June 1, for a metal liner that may be used with the R3 hip replacement system. Since the product was introduced in 2007, and launched globally in 2009, approximately 7,700 of the recalled metal hip liners have been implanted, with most used in total hip replacements.

REVIEW A CASE

Symptoms of problems from a Smith & Nephew metal-on-metal hip replacement may include:

  • Hip or Groin Pain
  • Difficulty Walking or Standing
  • Inflammation or Swelling
  • Loosening or Failure of the Implant
  • Development of Tumors
  • Revision Surgery to Replace the Artificial Hip

Although many consumers were told that metal-on-metal hip replacements would be more durable and last longer, individuals often require revision surgery within a few years after experiencing problems.

I had both hips resufaced over a period of 5 months in 2008. The last two years have been getting worse. I now have twice the limit of Cobalt and Chromium in my blood as reccomended. I am awaiting a consultants confirmation that I need both hips replaced where upon I have advised solicitors on a no win no fee basis to commence action for compensation.

had replacement hip r3 in august 2009. a few weeks later a fist size swelling occurred on the rear of my hip.surgeons said there was nothing wrong with implant.
after seeing md, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist, no one could help me, and no one could explain problem.7 months laying on my stomach with waist down hanging off the bed just to get 2 or 3 hours sleep every night before the swelling disappeared.
now December 2013, same thing has happened again, started out with a popping that could be heard from several feet away, then another swelling, had to purchase an adjustable air bed and prop several pillows under stomach for months to sleep, now other problems.

WISH YOU WERE IN BZ IN 2003–NEEDED 2ND HIP REPLACEMENT BECAUSE METALLIC DEBRIS FROM THE ORIGINAL HIP DEVICE DRIFTED DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SPIKE AND DECAYED THE BONE. THE RESULT WAS THE DEVICE SLIPPED INTO THE DECAYED AREA SO I WAS UNKNOWINGLY TILTED OVER FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. BACK PROBLEMS, PAIN AND EARLY REPLACEMENT. GLAD YOU ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE SOME FOLKS WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.
