Mirena IUD Complications Can Be Painful and Debilitating

As the use of Mirena IUD birth control continues to increase, providing women with a “hassel-free” and long-acting form of reversible contraception, a growing number of women are suffering horrific and painful internal injuries when the implanted device perforates the uterus or migrates to other parts of the body.

These Mirena complications can have a devastating impact on a woman’s quality of life, causing pelvic pain, lower back pain, bleeding, infections and other problems caused if the IUD slices through internal organs.

Injury Lawyers

Have You Suffered a Mirena IUD Injury?

REVIEW A CASE

The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. have been reviewing potential Mirena injury lawsuits for women throughout the United States, as the manufacturer appears to have failed to adequately warn about the risk of migration and perforation.

In many cases, women do not discover that there is a problem until long after the Mirena IUD was implanted, with complications often starting with abdominal pain or bleeding.

Visual imaging following these symptoms may reveal that the Mirena IUD has moved, and is not where it should be in the uterus. In some cases, women have not discovered the Mirena injury until they become pregnant because the device moved out of place in the uterus.

Women have reported that their doctors found the Mirena IUD on the wrong side of the uterus wall, even as far away as the liver. In some cases, women have discovered that their body expelled the Mirena on its own.

In addition to the pain and complications associated with perforation or migration, woman may suffer further injury during attempts to remove Mirena IUD. In some cases, it has been necessary for women to undergo a hysterectomy, potentially leading to unwanted infertility and hormal changes.

These Mirena injuries have also been linked to severe psychological effects, such as depression, anxiety and mood changes.

MIRENA INJURY LAWSUITS

It appears that Bayer knew or should have known about the risk of spontaneous migration, uterine perforation and other Mirena IUD complications, yet failed to provide adequate warnings or information for women or the medical community. As a result, financial compensation may be available for those that have experienced these problems.

I had the mirena placed three days ago. My doctor told me i would have slight cramping. The day of the insertion I couldnt drive home. All the pain is located on the left side of my body. Now on the third day the pain is getting worse. The pain is shooting down my leg and is in my lower back. Plus my abdominal area. I cant stand up without nearly fainting. I had no idea that it would give me this much pain. I just really want it taken out.

I had the Mirena placed in 2010 and removed in 2011. A few months after being placed, I ended up having surgery to remove two cysts, which caused me to lose 1/3 of my left ovary. In the process of this surgery, my doctor found Endometriosis. About 3 to 4 months after I had it removed, I had a tubal pregnancy in my left tube which resulting in me losing my left tube.

I had a Mirena placed about 4 1/2 years ago. I just found out on Tuesday that the device moved and dropped from its position and now I’m PREGNANT. I went to the ER because I was bleeding for 18 days without stopping. I was devastated while leaving the ER. Dr gave me some information on “possible miscarriage.” The bleeding continues. This is my 22nd day of bleeding. My obgyn is taking additional test on me to determine what he will do or if I lost the baby. So sad………. I will find out on monday =( So nervous

I got mine about 2 weeks ago. They said it would hurt a little during and after. I still cringe thinking of the pain when they inserted it and after was horrible. Wish they would have told me I’d have horrible cramps that would keep me in bed until the next day. Now I have to go in and get it checked and I’m so so so scared because I remember the pain of them putting it in. I have to go because it’s coming out and I’m bleeding. I don’t want to go but I have to. I’ve already put it off for two days.

I didn’t have any warning from, my doctor about the side effects and it still is uncomfortable. When i walk or if me and my husband have intercourse, it stabs me and i occasionally bleed from it. I’ve had my Mirena Iud for almost a year now with no complications at all everything has been fine. Here I am about 10 months later nothing has changed.this morning after sex with my husband things felt different so I checked my Mirena as I always did ,things felt ok. I called my doc she said to come in Monday just to be sure..after a few hours I started having a lot of pain almost like contractions..I checked again and my Mirena is out of place! Now it is coming out by itself! I called my doc now she says go to emergency room..so here we are at the emergency room still very painfully, they will most likely remove it(which I will not be against) after all this time my body is rejecting and I asked every question imaginable when the iud was inserted including if it can move or knocked out of place on it own or by intercourse and of course the answer was no..I was also provided with a pamphlet which I still have and no where in there does it have the Information above

I got the IUD put in jan. 2011 & removed aug. 2012. The first time i got an infection from it, i went to the doctor and was treated, but it was not removed. I then contracted the same infection a second time, and again was treated but it was not removed. I started having cramping before my first infection, but after the second infection i went to get it removed. The doctor who took it out then told me it should have been removed the first time because the infection would never go completely away while i had it.

I had mirena put in several years ago…very painful and long procedure. Bled like crazy..soaked several pads and could not go to work! Six weeks later I went for an ultrasound to check the placement…they could not find it..even did an internal. The dr said it must have fallen out…give me a break! This is big enough to notice. So over the past several years I have had irreagular periods. sometimes twice a month..painful intercourse..a bowel infection..random cramping and pain in lower abd. migraines..extreme fatigue..these are some of the changes in my health status. Im not sure if its related to mirena..I figured I was just getting older…But now I am wondering. I never went back to the dr to have her find the iud bc she insisted it had fallen out…here we are a few years later and I finally made an appt with a gyn and I am going to request an abdominal scan or xray.

I got my IUD placed about 5 to 6 years ago and lost my insurance last year so I have not had it removed however for the last year I have had severe abdominal pain and I am currently running a fever and I have an appointment tomorrow but I am sure that I’ll have to go in for surgery because of the severe pain I am absolutely certain that the tissue is growing around the IUD. I had a cyst on the same side that ruptured 6 months ago and fluid leaked down my leg in the store then became lightheadedness and dizzy but that was 4 days after my reconnection healing practitioner worked on me causing the cyst to exfoliate itself by using light and information from hIgh frequencies but now it’s back and it’s horrible pain!

I had the Mirena put in 2009 was always getting sick, abdominal pain and severe back pains where I could not even get out of bed. After some testing (which also came back abnormal in the liver), CAT scan & X-rays they found the IUD embedded in my uterus. I ended up having a complete hysterectomy & IUD surgically removed. I had it removed last Aug. and still starting to feel the bad symptoms again with back pain

I had the IUD put in about 6 months ago and my doc told me that there were no side effects. About a month or so after getting it I started getting sharp abdominal pains that felt like the mirena pinching me so I went to the doc and she did an ultrasound and found a cyst on my ovary (which I had never had any before) I told her I wanted to take the IUD out but she convinced me that they were unrelated, now I have these lumps on my buttocks I’m having trouble getting an appointment with my doc but I did some research and I think they are Pilonidal Cysts. They are extremely painful, and I have never had any cysts before I had the Mirena inserted. I was just wondering if anyone else has had these same symptoms? (I am convinced it is the mirena and as soon as I can am getting it out)

I agree with you Angela. I had the IUD inserted in 2008 (it is due to be removed June 2013). I’ve had bleedings, pelvic pains and cysts. I told my doctor that all these things happening could be because of Mirena and she insisted that it is not. Also everytime my period is just about due I could feel a lump in my lower ab and breast.

I got the Mirena March 19th 2012 its been a lil over a yr now. When I had it put in I was on a Prenatal Insurance plan. That would expire after my 6wk check up. My doctor never informed me that it should be checked atleast twice a year. Didn’t give me no kinda advice, just a pamphlet. Sexual intercourse is very painful, my periods last for 6-10 days now. Heavy flow. Extreme weight gain. Constant stomache cramps. Somtimes it hurts so bad I cant stand up,walk or anything. There is smell that constantly returns. BV returns so much, that i feel like I am always on antibiotics. I really need it removed.

I had Mirena placed about a year ago. I started having severe abdominal pain (the same pain experienced during insertion) about once every 2 weeks for 10 months. I went in for several ultrasounds, but my OBGYN insisted everything was in place. He started out prescribing Ibprofin, then 800mg Ibprofin, then muscle relaxers, then finally percoset.
One night, I had such an intense “contraction” that it had me on the floor screaming. I called my OBGYN and they had me come in immediately. Turns out, it was a ruptured ovarian cyst. I had never had these before. They insisted that it wasn’t Mirena and that Mirena actually FIXES cysts. So I left it in and then a few days later, felt horrible cramping and was vomiting. I went to the emergency room and found out I had another cyst.
I finally removed Mirena and then a couple months later, had Skyla inserted by a different OBGYN. Now I’m feeling that same horrible cramping. I thought that since it was smaller and had less progestrin, it would be different, but it’s the same pain.

were to begin, this thing put me through hell!! when i got it inserted five yrs ago the pain was ubarrable, i had severe cramping in my legs and pain in my lower back and feet. The leg pains stayed and so did the joint pain It was hard to sleep most nights.Everyday tasks seemed hard to do such as taking care of my toddler and housework. i have had so many infections that dont seem to go away. The odar is just humiliating and the discharge. I always had pressure down there and it felt heavy all the time. I lost my sex drive not to mention sex was painfull i to would get sharp pains and get dizzy and nauses. Nothing seemed to work for the pain. i became very depressed and angry i hated life i never wanted to get out of bed. i had no energy , i would be so confused couldnt remember anything like i was in a daze. I would have migraines that would last for days i would cry everyday not knowing what to do because my doctors said that it wasnt from the mirana, but i knew it was because none of these problems came about untill i had the iud put in. i thought i was loosing my mind! i gained so much weight. I weight 135 getting it put in and then when they weighted me when i had it removed i weight 180. Since having it removed in october i lost most of the weight. The pains in my legs in my thighs are gone but the pain in my bones and joints are still there.I have trouble standing for more than a few hours at work some days i cant go due to the leg pain. My sex drive has come back. I still get severe cramping before i start my period. The foul discharge and smell will not go away even though i tryed antibotics and what not. Im embarssed to be intiment with my fieance. Im extremly upset that the doctors i went to told me that the problems i was having wasnt from the iud,but i knew deep down something was very wrong and i just want to be back to normal if its even possible.

I had the Mirena inserted in the fall of 2010 in the hopes of no periods since that is what the doctor told me would happen when using it. I will add that having it inserted was the worst pain i have ever experienced (worse than child birth) and nearly passed out. Over the next two years I had two week long periods every month that were very light but none the less bothersome. On September 11, 2013 I decided to have it removed. On September 14 I began bleeding heavily. I continued bleeding heavily for 6 months. My doctor tried multiple things to get the bleeding to stop. Nothing helped. I ended up severely anemic and admitted to the hospital for to have a blood transfusion because I had lost so much blood. In March I made the decision to have a hysterectomy. It was the last option I had for relief from bleeding, being anemic, etc. I am only 35. Since then things are so much better and I don’t regret having a hysterectomy. I do believe it all was a result of getting the Mirena.

And I’m experiencing severe pain in my lower right abdomen area radiating pain down into my right thigh. I felt as if I was going crazy.. did some research online and found other women like myself… and they called it the “Mirena Crash” after going through this emotional roller coaster for almost 2months… i found out that I was 5weeks pregnant August 8 2013… which i was very happy about after having two boys i felt as if i’d finally have my girl… but as of right now im recovering from an Ectopic Pregnancy where I had to have my right Fallopian removed… doctors say I can still get pregnant having just the left but I’m terrified that it will happen again… I’m just wondering why there are no lawsuits for women like myself who are having problems even though they did not need surgery to get their Mirena removed…

I got my first IUD in 2007 since then I have had PID at least 10x I have had my left ovary and Fallopian tube removed due to cysts scarred tissue and chronic pelvic pain after the ovary and Fallopian tube were removed that procedure cost me a house and a job bc it took over a month for me to recover. I had to have another exploratory procedure 9months later that put me down for a week bc I was still having the pain. I developed more cysts on my right ovary but didn’t have it removed with hopes of one day having another child although the ‘doctors said y chances were slim to none. I had 1 miscarriage when the 1st IUD was in place. I had to have the IUD surgically removed bc it had migrated and the strings had retracted into my uterus and implanted themselves in my uterine wall. I am now on my 2nd IUD and I have had another miscarriage and i have also had PID again as well as another pelvic issue and am still dealing with extensive irregular bleeding and massive pelvic pain. I am a single mother to a beautiful 5 year old boy with down syndrome he has enough health problems on his own and having complications from this IUD just make it harder to care for him properly which isn’t fair to him or me this pain is ridiculous and completely unnecessary given that I was a very healthy person before this type of birth control!!! I am not amused!!!

I am writing this about my granddaughter. Age 28. Teaches Kd
Has 3 children. After 2nd child had a dam Mirena put in. Bleeding & horrible
cramping. Pregnant again very soon. Was told by a Dr that it had been expelled due to her marathjron running. 16 months ago she had a precious baby boy, the other children precious girls. But one week ago she had cramping & pains on her right side.
‘she assumed it was her appendix. Barely drove herself to the hospital. They put her in surgery & surprise, there was the dam iud imbedded in the appendix. Four hours later, she wanted to die of pain. I am 72 years old & have learned a few things. Do not trust a dam Dr as far as you can throw him. They are not God, But I remember when I was having children I thought they were! I think that every one of ;you sweet women should sue the co that has made these horriable iuds , And that every one gets compensation for all the pain & suffering they have caused you. I am encouraging my Beautiful granddaughter to. I love my great-grandchildren & thank God for them. But lets all do something about this horrible problem.

Was in the wrong place and they have to remove it a soon as possible they didn’t tell me why but today I’m tired to support this situation because it affect my personal life. I will find a new doctor to see what is going on one and then I’ll let ya know! The reason I share this is to ya don’t use iud .

Well….im convinced by these comments that i need to get this thing(Mirena IUD) removed ASAP. Ive had this iud for 4 1/2 yrs after giving birth to my twins in 2009. I was fine for years then all of the sudden 2 months ago i started to experience pain in my left leg like a shooting pain down the back. I thought it was a small charlie horse but it was almost too constant for that. So last week was enough was enough for me i was Rudely Awakend at 1am in sooooo much pain i couldnt even get out the bed to get some tylenol for my pain in my back and left leg..i was in sever pain and crying. I went to my Doc and was told that the pain or discomfort could be because its around the time for it to be removed(march2014) i should be fine, cant get pregnant and if i had any more problems before that then come back to have it taken out. You bet i am….(2weeks later)……my appt is mon the 30th and im not taking No for an answer. I dont want anymore children but i dont want to be disabled because of it. This pain is too much to endure anymore. Welp i guess me and Depo Provera are going to get reaquainted. This is serious and Needs to be Attended immediately. I’ve had mirena for a little over 2 1/2 years now 2 months after I had my daughter . It has been awful first of all it was painful to have it put in at first I really liked it but then I noticed my mood changes didn’t change and I stopped losing weight but it was so painful to have it inserted and I was scared to have it remove. The systoms that I have had with this is hair loss, weight gain, no sex drive at all, mood swings, anxiety, lower back pain, breast tenderness, cramps, heavier periods, pain during intercourse, no energry, nausea. This entire time I was able to feel the strings so I assumed everything was ok. In June 2013 I was so feed up with this thing and read so many post how easy and painless it was to have it remove,so I finally seen a doctor to remove it. It was so painful as the doctor try to remove it I had a cramping sensation from the top of my head to my toes. The doctor stopped and said it might be attached to try to remove it by dialating me. I had gone to planned parenthood thinking I had no insurance due to a switch. So I made an appointment with my doctor told him what happened he try to remove it by dilation. Not succeful he tells me I have to have surgery to have it removed. But he’s going out of town just my luck. So I wait for my insurance switch now I go to my new doctor explain what has happen and I just want it out. He said I needed an xray did that. IUD strings canbe seen but tthey don’t know where exactly. I am scheduled for surgery now for august go to surgery a vaginal one. It was not successful they weren’t able to remove it but went in with a camrea and can see strings but no iud . So the doctor scheduled me for a MRI no luck with that either they can see mirena but not sure where it pefiroated though. Did a ct scan of my pelvis and it shows it is embedded in my uterus but not sure if it attached itself to anything else. I am 26 years old with 2 children and me and my husband want more children but there is a chance that I might have to have a histerectomy. Its really scary I have surgery Oct. 16th I have waited over a month and a half for this date it seems forever away. Hopefully they can remove it without having a histerectomy. Right now I’ve bee. Having shooting pains in my uterus on my left side only very painful Oct 16th please come soon. This has been an absolute night mare I will never recommended this awful thing.

I got the mirena in 2010 3 months after giving birth. They inserted the mirena and placed it wrong so the next day I came in and they had to remove it and replace it which was very painful. After I got the mirena i no longer had periods but was having extreme pain in my pelvis. Having intercourse was terrible. I would be on the verge of tears every time. Sometimes sitting down I’d get sharp pain in my pelvis. My depression and anxiety got worse. I got in removed 11 months after it being placed. And was still having sharp pain. I went into to get checked out. Had ultrasounds done and test done and they told me nothing was wrong. I would never recommend the mirena to anyone!

I had a mirena inserted 11 years ago age 48. I suffered a lot of pain for a long time and then it settled down but never completely. I always felt it was sticking in me, i had it checked by my gp but because the strings were in place no one thought anything was wrong. I recently have a lot of blood problems and we decided to get the mirena removed. Two doctors tried but failed. Then I had a camera in my womb and there is no sign of the mirena. It looks like it has been inserted on the outside of my womb and was never inside my womb. I now have to have an MRI to see how deeply it has penetrated and then face a hysterectomy.

Crying spells but the worse was the lower and higher abdominal pain loss of appetite. Unable to keep any food down. Diarrhea, constipation, vomiting. Laying in fetal position. Unable to work or be a mom. It has been 2 days since removal and I was finally able to drink broth. Not sure how long it will take but I’m just ready to be me again.

I had mirena put in Oct 2012 and had it removed Sep 2013 due to extreme pain and even during intercourse when there was intercourse cause the mirena had me to where I wasn’t in the mood for sex and that causes problem with the husband and I didn’t like feeling like that and being depressed and ill and it caused pain in my stomach badly so I called my Ob/Gyn and went and he checked me and then sent me for a pelvic ultrasound and the mirena was coming out and that was one of the reason for the pain but the main reason was it caused me to get a pelvic infection so I had to take different antibiotics and I still have pain and I been having alot of headaches.I do not recommend the Mirena to anyone.

I had the mirena IUD inserted in May 2013 and was hospitalised overnight for pain upon insertion. An ultrasound confirmed it was placed correctly but from then I experienced pain during sex. In September 2013 I had a suspected ruptured ovarian cyst and was hospitalised again for pain. Another ultrasound confirmed the IUD was still in place however following this I experienced daily, debilitating pelvic and back pain. A host of doctors ruled out PID, ectopic pregnancy, further cysts and intestinal problems. A new GYN suspected endometriosis and scheduled a laproscopy for Jan 2014. She found no traces of endo and concluded that the pain was most likely caused by the Mirena. She surgically removed it on the spot and as yet the pain hasn’t returned.

Also the whole time iv had this iud mood swings, anxiety, depression, bleeding for weeks at a time,i feel weak and dizzy, & i dont feel like doing anything! And thats not ok with a 6 year old and a 6 month old to care for! I wish i never let my obgyn talk me into geting mirena iud because i was on insurance for pregnancy only and now i have no insurance and need to go to dr. to have this stupid iud checked and REMOVED. I would never recommend this type of birth control to anyone. I hope all of you who have experienced complications get something for your suffering. Its so sad to read and hear about some many terrible experiences.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted two years ago. The doctor told me that, even though I had never been pregnant, I shouldn’t have any problems. After it was inserted i couldn’t move. I stayed in my bed for three days, until i couldn’t take it anymore. After several hours in the Emergency Room, I was informed that I had a pelvic infection, and was given antibiotics. After months of dealing with it, the pain still hasn’t gone away. It decreased to a dull ache for a while, but after sex it gets so much worse. Today I’m back to being unable to move. I don’t know if it’s supposed to do this, and I’m being a wimp, or if I need it removed.

I had the Mirena inserted two 3 months (March 2013) after I had my second child. It was painful when the doctor inserted the IUD, it felt like if I was in labor. After the first month with it I started with a urinary tract infection, I keep getting those every month. I’ve taken antibiotic frequently which I think is not good for me, I’ve become resistant to many already. I decided to remove it 8 months later because the infection and kept increasing. I had to see a Urologist to get treated but she didn’t do anything. I don’t have medical insurance and I’ve been paying to much money out of my pocket 🙁 I still have urine infections eventhough I removed it. I’ve had anxiety attacks and I’m scared of having a depression.

I have had my IUD for just over a year (Jan. 2013). I had it inserted as I had extremely heavy bleeding during my menstrual cycle. It seemed okay at the time but as time went on I found I have had some symptoms that have started to become apparent over the course of the year. I find I am extremely depressed, irratible. I experienced severe pain in my lower back in the summer, which I had assumed was just overuse and strain. As well since September I have had excruciating headaches and acne as well as severe muscle aches in my head, neck and shoulders. I quit smoking about 5 months ago and put on some weight but now for a month I have returned to weight watchers and track what I eat almost to obsession as well as work out 5 – 6 days a week. I have not lost 1 pound. I am due for a check up but I would like some advice on whether I am being crazy or if this could be the mirena. I am at a point where I am angry, depressed and have actual anxiety attacks more and more frequently. Is it me?

I had mirena placed years ago, and removed after an er visit where i was in excruciating pain that was due to the mirena. It had caused an infection inside me and this was two years later…my body was treating it as a foreign invader. I ended up getting a tubal ligation, but have had horrible problems since it was removed, including ovarian cysts. The last one, a week ago, was baseball-sized when it ruptured, filling my abdominopelvic cavity with blood and sending me into emergency surgery to remove almost a liter of blood. I feel all my complications are due to the evil little iud known as mirena!

I had mine put in 3 years ago. I’ve had depression, I thought I was just hormonal. Dizziness (which I contributed to low blood sugar), but I drink juice and eat peanut butter and I still have dizzy spells. Splotchy skin and weight gain, again I attributed to hormones. Anxiety, sleeplessness, and swollen stomach. I actually went to the Dr to make sure my IUD was in place and it was. The straw that broke the camels back is that I began having lower back pain, hip pain, and knee pain. I figured it was because I gained weight or because my mattress needs to be changed. I have been trying to put aside money to but a new mattress but in the meantime I figured I would start walking and eating right to lose weight. I also started sleeping with a pillow between my legs which helps a little but I still can barely sleep. I lost 20lbs and I’m thinner but my stomach is always “bloated”. I didn’t even know there could be a correlation between the IUD and all of these symptoms. Its hard to walk sit or sleep. I have an appointment in two days to have it removed, and I hope to God it improves my symptoms. I guess Ill find out whether its the cause or not in a month or two.

I’ve had the mirena for 5yrs until last week. What a horrible experience. I’ve experienced back pain, leg pain, depression, anxiety, feeling of needles sticking me in my feet and legs, weight gain, frustration && no sex drive.About 3 years ago I noticed a large lump forming on the left side of my forehead. Went to pcp for lump who referred me to a dermatologist who advised me not to bother the lump at that time. I agreed and waited it out, lump was getting larger. I said ive had enough.Always thought it came from something else. I recently went to my ob/gyn to have this nightmare (mirena iud) removed and u wouldnt believe what ive noticed lump has reduced tremendously after just 1 week of removal of iud. Im looking into a lawsuit against bayer, mirena && all of its affiliates because I wentbthrough alot with that lump. Im still having mood changes though. Lastnight I had to go to the emergency room because of severe pain in my back in which I couldnt even sit or lay down, which is causing me to miss work and school. Devastated I am @ this point. I have an appointment on monday hopefully I will find out more about this mirena side affects and this lump (now a pea size). Scared AND hoping everything else is alright. MY ADVICE IS TO ALL IS TO LEAVE THE MIRENA IUD WHERE YOU FOUND IT IN THE BOX, IT CAUSES TO MUCH PAIN AND TO MANY HORMONAL PROBLEMS. PLEASE PASS ON TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I have had Mirena since Oct. 2013 and I have honestly had no problems with it, It was a simple procedure that took all of 10 minutes. Slight cramping for a day or two, and the normal spotting in which my Dr warned me would last about 2 to 3 months. From time to time I have slight cramps in my pelvic are and my side, but I have noticed my sex drive goes up high then some days I bottom out. I do get emotional but I was very emotional before Mirena. I am not sure if Mirena is adding to the emotions or really causing the pelvic pain which occurs in my right side like menstrual cramps. But I am contacting the Dr just to be on the safe side of things.

My life has changed beyond recognition. I decided to have it out 7 days ago which was straight forward. All bloods normal. Still have same symptoms and prey that these symptoms will go so i can have my life back. Im convinced it is due to the mirena but the doctors dismiss it. Im 50 and feel 80. Its been a living nightmare but still have no concrete answers. I hope soon post mirena my body will go back to normal. My doctor told me its normal and should go away within the first year. The last month and a half I’ve had random cramping, spotting, mood swings…within the last week I have had continuous sharp stabbing pain in my lower left abdominal, a low grade fever and spotting. Its taken 3 days to convince my doctor to do an ultrasound (he was convinced only when every test he ran to try to explain it came back normal). I go in today for my ultrasound and I am worried. I had the Mirena inserted three days ago under a twighlight anesthetic. The Doctor recommended the sedation due to the risk of pain and fainting. The moment I woke up I was in absolute agony, the dr did inform me prior that I could experience pain after as i am young and have no children but I did not expect it to be so horrendous. I was bleeding heavily, vomiting, shivering and passing out. The Dr did an ultrasound and told me he was going to remove it immediately, which he did, again under light sedation. He sent me home with pain medication and antibiotics. The pain continued for two days and has subsided now fortunately. I had the mirena in place for a grand total of one hour! Before removal I was given panadiene forte, tramadol and a heat pack but nothing would even take the edge off. I already suffer from Interstitial Cystis which is an often debilitating non bacterial form of chronic inflammation of my bladder, which the Doctor was aware of and said it makes no difference, maybe I found it intolerable impart because of my preexisting condition but I can’t be sure. In saying that though, I’m always in pain with the bladder condition but this new sudden pain was something totally intolerable and the degree was totally unexpected. After reading all of the stories on this site I’m glad I found out the side effects of Mirena so soon, possibly avoiding permanent damage.

I had the Mirena put in june 19 of this year, and had it taken out three days later. I don’t have any kids, and when I was perscribed it I had no idea that it was mainly for the use of women who have had kids. I wasn’t told about any side effects except for the heavy bleeding and cramps.
About three days later, my lower back felt like it was on fire. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t even lye down without my back hurting. Later that night I went to the ER and they told me nothing was wrong and if I’d like to remove it anyway.I got it removed.
My doctor also inserted it before I got my period, I ended up getting my period (it was worse than any cycle I’ve ever had in my life.) and I was bleeding so badly I soaked through 3 pairs of pants. I ended up going back to the ER and they told me it was completely normal.
A month later now, and I’m having exruciating lower back pain to the point where I cry in pain. I feel like I’m about to vomit. I’ve asked my sister and my boyfriend’s mom, they both say I’m getting my period, but if this is what getting my period is like now.. Every month for a week now (when it used to be 5 days) I’m not leaving my home.

I had the Mirena IUD placed in January 2014 after the birth of our 2nd daughter, I just had it removed two days ago. I am a healthy 26 year old Mom that has two children. I began having hot flashes like a scorching liquid was running through my arms & legs then within hours I would be so cold I couldn’t do anything to warm myself up. Then I began getting a numbing/tingling/itching sensation throughout different parts of my body – every hour was something different. I had headaches, joint & bone aches. My shoulders, neck & heels grind. I had one instance of a “brain zap” & a terrible 24 hour dizzy spell. I do have a history of anxiety & depression (never have had to resort to medication) & it became severely irritated as well. I was moody and overall just felt like total crap. I have myself terrified that these symptoms are those of MS, I know a few people in my life with it so I guess it’s something I’m very aware of. This isn’t even a full list of my symptoms ! But there the most worry some to me. I have started doctoring have seen my GP & gone for bloodwork, I’m sure neurologist and MRI to ensure my health are to follow. But after reading all these posts I wouldn’t be crazy to think the Mirena is the cause of all this craziness. I have a number of friends with this device and they seem to get along fine with it. But as others have said each women’s body is unique & things effect us the same. I hope all you ladies get feeling back to yourselves ASAP !

I am not able to have sex due to my period is getting very heavy again and now I am releasing blood clots. I hate to call my doctor because she don’t want to perform a hysterectomy on me due to high risk. I am very concern because I am young newlywed and we both need sex. A rare moon happens more” I keep getting syst on my ovary’s every few months they get big hurt and very painful!!! I get kidney infections about two to three times a year” I keep getting swelling of the breast where they leak” I have two kids 🙂 but the was six years ago” they shouldn’t leak now… I’ve never had any problems like this before I got this put in. The doctor gave it to me because I get fluid build up on the brain when I get pregnant and have two spinal taps , fluid
started after my second… So they thought this was the best choice since I was young to get my tubes tide. But it has caused me so much pain I have been to the hospital so many times in one year I’m annoyed” and they still won’t take in out even with all their medical records showing how much I’m in there because of it.

Ever since I got the stupid mirena I have been getting pain in my lower stomach after intercourse..so I went to the doctor after not being able to feel my strings and I had a very heavy period. I said I wanted it out and they couldn’t find it. So I had to get an ultrasound and there was nothing. So to be on the safe side I got an xray done. There was nothing so they guess it fell out. I have switched to nexplanon..I will never get mirena again..

hi I just turned 28. I got the mirena taken out in 2012. I had been hurting so bad that a doctor in Virginia requested I get it taken out. Every time I had sex it hurts like hell. I stayed getting urinary tract infections and cyst on my ovaries. Til this day I still have horrible lower abdominal pain after sex. It’s starting to effect my relationship between me and my husband because we don’t have sex like that. Also, I have been having trouble conceiving, my spouse wants a baby. Because he doesn’t have any kids.

I have three kids and decided to get an IUD AFTER MY 3rd child. I had a Mirena IUD placed in February of 2014. It is now 9 months later and I wish I had gone with my first instinct on not getting it. I have been hormonal, moody, with absolutely no sex drive. And over the past couple weeks I’ve developed lower back pain. Today, however, it has become severe, crippling me, making it hard for me to even bend over or pick anything up. I’m a registered nurse so I need to be able to move quickly and lift heavy objects at times; As well as be able pick my 2 yr old and 11 month old. I am currently waiting for my doctors office to call me back so I can get in there to have this IUD removed. I will never get it again! Since I’ve gotten it, I feel like a totally different person, I’m hoping when it’s removed, I’ll be back to my fun, happy 32 yr old self, rather than this 80 yr old woman I’ve become!!

Two months after my son was born It was suggested that I get the newest form of IUD, the Mirena. About 6 months afterward I began having multiple surgeries to remove softball sized cysts and endometriosis. Ultimately I had to have a hysterectomy from the severe pain and terrible bleeding caused by the IUD. I don’t know why they didn’t remove the Mirena during the initial surgeries. I now am unable to have another child. My son asks mommy for a baby brother or sister and I just cry.

ive had the iud for a little over 2years now. i got it put in about 3mths after my 2nd son was born. i never had any problems with it, til Feb 2013, a little over a year after i had it put in. i went to find out why i was having a lot of pelvic pain. the doc told me that i was just a little swollen on the left side, but there was nothing wrong with the iud. so he talked me into leaving it in, so i did. Dec 2014, i started bleeding. i thought it was my period. so i went along with it as normal. well it was still around 3wks later. and every time i would have intercourse it would hurt me. well this week makes 5wks that ive been bleeding, having painful cramping, especially during intercourse. i called my doc to set up a doc appt, and because i have an outstanding bill of $60, they refused to make me an appt. so once i can come up with an extra $60(which is impossible when i’m a stay at home mom, and all my bf’s money goes towards everything in the house), im getting the iud taken out!!!!! i say it should of been taken out last year!

I haven’t seen anyone share my problem. I got the mirena iud inserted post abortion a week ago. Almost immediately I have been feeling weird sensations in my arteries in my arms and legs; I am assuming because of a rise in blood pressure? The sensations have elevated to pain in some places for long periods of time. I noticed my toes in my left leg turned purple when seated too long. Today I felt the pain in my heart. The soonest I could make an appointment at planned parenthood to get it removed is six days away and I am honestly afraid to wait that long. I am hoping someone else has shared this issue and it did not prove to be severe.

After trying birth controls and having surgery for endometriosis my doctor told me my options were Lupron or Mirena. Because I was nervous about the side effects of Lupron I opted for the hellish mirena. The procedure of having it put in was terrible and I love my ob/gyn, she’s the nicest lady ever, but the pain was terrible. That night the pain never went away so they sent me for a pelvic ultrasound. It was confirmed to be in the right place. I had my annual less than a week later and she said she still wanted to see me 4 weeks after that. I had it inserted March 26th, two days after my period. I finally stopped bleeding April 6-8th, on the 9th, weird twinges and pain that I am more than familiar with started again and I thought maybe i’m over reacting because I’m a nurse practitioner and very aware of my body. Well, I got up to use the facilities and sure enough there was spotting, this has started and has not stopped since then. Yesterday, the 13th, I called my ob/gyns office and asked to see my doctor immediately, they could not fit me in until Friday and the latest they see patients is 4:30 and my husband works until late. They told me I could go to the ER. I went to the ER and they said I’d have to see my ob/gyn. I was having severe dizziness and headaches and my balance is off. I ended up going to another ER and they gave me meclizine. This morning I am having sharp severe pain. I hate to bother my ob/gyn but this is worse than endometriosis pain. She didn’t want me on the progesterone only pill because I have having a period twice a month but ever since I’ve had this put in with the exception of 3 days, I’ve had a period/spotting the ENTIRE MONTH! I would hope that my doctor has done research on this so called “wonder device” and not just prescribing it because of popularity. I too am having heavy legs and weird pains all over. I am petrified! I am about to give up western medicine and see a naturopathic doctor.

I had my first Mirena put in 6 weeks after my child was born in 2009. I had no problems. I had no periods. I thought it was the best invention ever. I had it three years, then had it removed because I was losing my health insurance and didn’t know if I’d be able to have it removed in the future. I had no issues.
In January of this year, I started a period that did not end. By May I would have done pretty much anything to make it stop, so when my OB/GYN recommended Mirena as a solution, I was thrilled. This second insertion, done in May,was dramatically different the first. It was so painful that I threw up. I had to lie there for nearly an hour before I could walk. I went home and laid in bed for 3 days. I could not work or take care of my child due to the pain. My period got heavier than I could have ever imagined possible. The clots were, to my naive eyes, gigantic at quarter size…if only I’d known what was to come. My strings disappeared before my six week follow up. They did the ultrasound and there it was, looking normal. I felt relieved, but questioned why I was STILL bleeding. I was told it was normal. Give it at least 3 months. I continued to bleed and cramp and ache. I had my first vaginal infection. I took antibiotics but never felt better. This went on until September. I woke up one morning in a pool of blood. I had clots the size of both of my fists combined. I was having contractions. I KNOW what that feels like. I felt something poking my thigh. It was the strings. I go to check this thing and it is partially expelled, but stuck in my cervical opening. It was absolutely excruciating. I called the OB/GYN who told me to go to emergency. The emergency room here is afraid of vaginas. They wouldn’t even look. I go to the OB/GYN clinic, covered in blood, where they quickly shuffle me into a room and pull the dreadful thing out. No imaging. No blood tests. No followup. It has been six days now and I am still pouring with clots larger than soft balls. It feels like I am giving birth every fifteen minutes. I am dizzy and nauseated. I have cold sweats and chills. I cannot eat and now I’ve begun to smell…like a sewer. I am genuinely afraid I may die.
My regular OB/GYN is out of town. Nobody wants to touch me because I am a (barely) walking lawsuit. The public hospital even refused to treat me. I don’t know what made this time so different than the time before, but I do KNOW it is not worth the risk. With the reaction I’ve received from the medical community, I think they know it too. Best of luck to you all. I hope someone puts a stop to this thing…and I hope I don’t die tonight. No joke.

I think the Mirena IUD seriously messed me up dpwn there. I had it inserted in 02/2010 by advice of my doctor. I had normal, regular periods with not very heavy bleeding and no cramps before then. I ended up taking the IUD out in 12/2010 because it made sex painful. I was 23 and not about to stop having sex. The doctor said it came to easily and probably wasn’t inserted correctly. I chose to keep it out (I didn’t want to go through insertion cramps again). Sex is still painful for me to this day. My period has been so out of whack since- at first it was very irregular then non-existent, then in 04/2013 I started a never ending period. It lasted until last February (2014). Almost an entire year and it only stopped when I decided to the Pill. My periods have been heavy since taking the IUD out and gives me very horrible cramps. Why isn’t there more information on these type of side effects? My OBGYN has no idea how to help.

I had my Mirena inserted in December of 2014. Ever since then I have had extreme abdominal pain, cramping and sharp pains down there. Sometimes to the point of it making me double over in pain and stop me in my tracks. The doctor told me it would take a few months to get used to it and that would be normal. It was inserted only 3 weeks after I had Hemorroid surgery, which the doctor said was okay but I think was NOT. I jumped off the table and never felt anything like that before in my life. Now in the past 6 months I have had severe pain in my hips and x-rays and MRI’s show everything “clear”. I have to hold my hip to walk at times, my muscles in the back of my thighs hurt and lower back and knees. I am always tired, sleep like crap, and have days that all I want to do and do is sleep, and I miss work because of this. I am in constant pain and I was told by my surgeon about a large ovarian cyst they found on an MRI and my OBGYN said nothing at all about it to me as if it was not important. My jaw hurts when I eat and have to chew. I cannot even chew gum anymore or enjoy a piece of candy. My mom was against the IUD from the beginning and I should have listened to her, Mom does know best! I have finally found a new OBGYN and I am excited to go see HER and lay everything out there and get this out of me as soon as possible. Of course the string has been lost and it will not be a simple 1,2,3 in and out process, but I am finally taking the step to have it removed and I hope a lot of these symptoms subside! To feel better again and back to myself would be like HEAVEN. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all you ladies who have posted on here and have the courage and strength to share. I thought I was insane and that I was just a constant complainer, at least now I know I am not alone and that others have experienced issues due to this and it is from the IUD. I will stick to the good old Birth control pill! I hope all of you find better health, happiness and peace. May God bless all of you and have his light forever shine on you.

I had my Mirena placed in May (we are now in July) and I have had consistent and extreme cramping and non-stop bleeding since insertion. They did the one month follow-up and said that this was normal and everything looked fine. I went back for a second check up because my cramping was making it hard to function at work (keeling over at work, paralyzingly painful cramping). When the nurse practitioner checked me she said the strings looked fine, but wanted to bring me in for an ultrasound two weeks later. That was last week. I couldn’t make it the two weeks because the cramping and bleeding became worse and I then started feeling an uncomfortable pressure (all cramping up until this point has been localized to the right side of my abdomen) and now included a sharp, shooting lower back pain (also on the right side). The last time I saw the doctor I told them how much pain I was in, but I feel as though they didn’t act like I was experiencing much pain. I now have an appointment today, because when I called to tell the staff of my new symptoms they said it could all be from the Mirena and they want to see me sooner. I’m really nervous, especially reading that it could cause infertility if embedded. When I first questioned getting Mirena, I was never alerted to the side effects. My doctor and the nurse practitioner never brought them up or mentioned risks of anything. They seemed very on board with it, and made me feel as though it was a great choice in birth control.

I had my IUD put in 5 years ago this year. I haven’t had any complications with it. When it was first put in of course I had some cramping & some spotting just the day it was put in. I haven’t had a period the whole time but I did get the symptoms as if I was having a period. When it was inserted the Dr cut the string way to short. I have very short fingers so I have NEVER been able to check it myself to make sure it’s in the same spot. My husband has only been able to feel it once & that wasn’t long after I got it put in. When I switched my Dr &!she checked it she said that everything looked good with it but the string was cut way to short. Thought I was one of the lucky ones cause I haven’t had any problems & I have had three of my friends had their’s removed cause their body rejected it. One of my friends got pregnant with twins & the Dr couldn’t find hers til after she had the babies & had to have it surgically removed cause where they found it. Well I woke up this morning with serve pains in the bottom of my stomach. It has continued all day where sometimes I’m doubled over. I have 3 kids so it’s not like I can just lay around. I have been so mean & snappy with my husband & he honestly hasn’t done anything wrong. I thought maybe it was gas of maybe I needed to use the bathroom but I KNOW that’s not it. Than it hit me. I’m pretty sure it’s my iud. I haven’t had it checked in probably 3 years & I’m so scared it has moved or something worse. I can’t even touch the bottom of my stomach without pain. Since the string is so short I can’t check it myself. I guess I’ll be going to the er tomorrow if the pain continues. I just don’t have any insurance that’s why I haven’t had it checked or removed since it has been in for 5 years now. I’m just scared something is seriously wrong with it. I’m so sorry that all you ladies have had such horrible experience with it. Now Idk what I’m going to do about birth control cause the depo shot blew me up & I went through 3 different kinds of pills but I bleed the WHOLE time on each of them. I love my kids with everything in me. I have a 11,9 & 8 year old & don’t want anymore kids. Lol! I’ll be praying for every one of ya’ll up here. Please pray for me as well that it will be a simple taking it out &!nothing else is wrong. Thank you for listening to my story. Lol!

I had terrible headaches and it felt like I was being stabbed in my uterus with an ice pick. I had to miss alot of work. Some days I just couldnt get out the bed. The strings always got shorter and shorter with every visit. The doctor refused to believe it was the IUD so he was about to do an ablation. We made a deal to remove it and see how I would feel everything got better.

I was told it could not have been the mirena. 2 years later I developed Adenomyosis and was told treatment should be an IUD. I had 1 inserted for this reason despite my doubts. The condition worsened in 3 months and I became severely depressed and now have chronic migraine, severe back and neck pain and cannot have intercourse with out severe pain and bleeding. I now have to have surgery in 2 weeks and will no longer be able to have children. I was not told of all these possible complications, and they have almost ruined my life!! I have had my IUD in for about eight months now, about a month ago I went through the day with my whole upper left side going numb. I couldn’t used my arm and my tongue was also numb. If I wasn’t 22 I would have thought it was a many stroke. I am also going through pain in my stomach as well as pain during sex. I have not got it checked out because I do not want to pay for the bill but I worry that my body is rejecting the IUD. I bled for 3 weeks straight ,a brown color, and I am always having to battle a odd smell. I have never ad any problems with my period so I am not impressed with the IUD. I now also worry that I am pregnant because I have started having a lack of hunger and I personally know someone who has gotten pregnant on this same IUD.

Hi Bridgette! I just saw your comment about having issues with liver inflammation. I was just recently informed by my doctor that my blood work I had done recently (I do this at least once a year to check everything) came back with my liver being something they now want to watch. I also had the Mirena for 5 years. I had some noticeable issues, but I did not know the liver was a problem as well! My Husband and I want to conceive but it is not happening as easily as it should. Is there anything more you (or anyone here) can tell me? Thanks so much!!

I had my Mirena put in on Sept. 4, 2018. Since day one I’ve had pains. for the 1st two months the pain in my middle of my pelvic area and middle of my lower back were so bad i had to lay down with two heating pads. one in the front the other in the back. I was in so much pain i was taking 3 Aleve’s every day to kill the pain and the headaches. By November it was so bad that i ended up giving myself an ulcer and had to go on meds to fix that. In the meantime, i complained to my GYN and told her i don’t feel the strings and I’m in pain. They sent me for an ultrasound in mid Oct or early Nov…don’t remember… to see if it moved. The ultrasound showed it was still where the gyn had placed it. But it did show i had a 3.2 cm cyst on my right ovary. I’ve never had cyst before until now. She said that may be what is causing me pain. The GYN did say it would take about 6 months for my body to adjust and to deal with it. I told her and my family doctor that my moods are all over the place. One second i could be laughing and the very next sitting on the floor in my closet crying. Angry where i want to hurt someone or sad and don’t want to leave my bed. My family doctor sent me to get a second opinion on the IUD and placed my on Lexapro for the moods. I keep having vary bad pains in my lower back, hip and right leg. I went and saw the 2nd opinion doctor at the end of Dec. and she sent me for an ultrasound first week on Jan this year. The ultrasound showed it is sitting a little low in my cervices canal but not too concern. No cyst on the right ovary but one is now showing on the left ovary. She told me that the pain i’m feeling is not from the IUD but from my weight. That i basically need to suck it up and let my body adjust to the new device. My pain is so bad some days that i can barely bend over and put sucks on or pick stuff up off the floor. I am overweight but not grossly overweight. Before this i did not have issues with pains… if nothing i’m actually 15 pounds lighter then i was when they put this IUD in me. I’ve now seen two doctors and both are telling me to deal with it, let my body adjust. The only person on my side is my family doctor who thinks i should have it removed.

I am 45. I have had a tubal ligation in 2001. I went to my Gyno in 2017 due to heavy bleeding. Dr recommended IUD Mirena. Of course, Dr recommends pt usually agrees, right? Takes their dr’s best judgement-that’s why their our dr’s. So, inserted. Today’s date is 2/8/19 10:10 p.m. 6 weeks ago my sex drive went THROUGH THE ROOF. 12 orgasms 2 hours! Non-stop wanting to have intercourse. It’s been 6 weeks of everyday intercourse or some form of fire play. Three weeks ago, I awoke at 3am in the morning screaming, doubled in pain, crying. I sat on the toilet. I had no idea what was happening to me. I really thought I was dieng. I lay limp on the bathroom floor. My husband was about to pick me up, when I just got up ran to our Jeep and said let’s go. By the time I did that it was gone. Last Thursday I started having REAL contractions. I have four kids. I know what those feel like., made me quite freaked out. Went to dr with my daughter, asked dr to order blood work to make sure I wasn’t pregnant lol, or if something else was off on my levels. Everything was fine. No abnormalities. Last night and all day today I have had contractions. Called my Gyno. Went in to see her. Did a pee test, not pregnant. Did a pelvic exam and I don’t know what she did but she pinched my vagina and when she did she sent me into SEVERE PAIN where I WAS SCREAMING. My husband was with he was outside the door and heard every bit of it. It was like I had just delivered a baby and she acted like she didn’t do a damn thing. Said my Mirena was in place. Told me to get an Ultrasound. I feel embarrassed and ashamed. Humiliated. I go for an ultrasound Monday to see and then she said next step Neurologist??? I stepped into a pile of shit w this Mirena and my Dr’s! Have never been so disappointed in lack of care and empathy!

I got my mirena placed in September 2016. I didn’t really notice too many issues until one time I had horrible cramps and bleeding.. thought maybe just a bad period. Well August of 2017 I found out I was pregnant! I was flipping out so I went to the er with intentions to get it out. They did an internal ultrasound and full abdominal and swore it must have fallen out and I didn’t see it. So I went along with that. My daughter was born a month early with hemangiomas all over her skin and liver. I blacked out through out my entire pregnancy , couldn’t even drive. It’s now 2019 I went to the er for unrelated abdominal pain and got a ct scan. They found my iud up by my right ovary! I have struggled the past few years with severe anxiety, severe lower back pain to the point I could barely take care of my children(which I also went to the dr for and was denied an mri by my insurance company). I have no idea if all of that is mirena related but the end of May I get surgery to get it removed and I’m also getting a tubal while they are at it. I can not find ANY information to figure out if mirena was the cause of my daughter’s health issues nor mine… but I’m upset

I had the mirena inserted in May 2014. The insertion was extremely painful and I almost lost consciousness. I had to my in the cold floor of the Dr.s office and could barely drive home. I suffered severe cramping over the next few weeks. A year later I started getting mood swings, anxiety and depression. I had to go into counseling as the anxiety was severe. I couldn’t sleep at night and developed insomnia. I’ve gone to the emergency room over the last few years at least four times for breast pain and nothing was found. I suffered extreme fatigue and gained almost 40 lbs. my joints were hurting and swollen. I had the mirena removed today after 5 years and I also instantly feel energized! It is 14 hours later and breast pain is gone, bloating is gone, and leg tightness appears to be gone. Mirena caused major complications in my body and outbursts in my moods swings and I am now pending divorce. Do not, I repeat do not put this demon inside your body!!!

I have severe nausea and migraines. I cry for no reason, I get mood swings and sometimes don’t even want to do anything. I have 4 children, and I have tried to get back onto my anxiety medication, but for some reason the doctors don’t want to. They keep choosing “natural” remedies. None of that works! I was perfectly fine on my original medication. I don’t know what to do. I’m on Medicaid, and where I’m at, there’s no good doctors. They’re all young beginners, RN’s, or don’t know what the hell they’re doing.

I had a Mirena IUD after my daughter was born in 2008 – I kept the Mirena for the full 5 years and then had it removed. Since the removal, I have not had a period return, at all, not even spotting in years.
I’m not sure if I can get pregnant or not at this point, and I cannot seem to find any real information on the internet, or women who have experienced the same thing.
I didn’t have a negative experience, during the time I had the IUD, it wasn’t painful, and my period continued for a few months, and since 2008 I have not had a period.

I have had severe acne, but I didn’t attribute it to the Mirena until recently – I had a strange rash pop up a couple times over the years, including a lot of red spots that were not raised or itchy at all. I went to a couple doctors and they couldn’t figure out what it is. I’ve since been left with scarring on my abdomen from the rash and still no confirmed diagnosis of what happened. Now I’m wondering if the strange symptoms and situations I find myself in, could be related to the Mirena, since I’ve not been on any other medications, or medical devices that could explain the lack of menstrual cycle, acne, and emotional roller coaster at times.

I just had my mirena taken out today after the 5 year mark. But I wanted to take it out sooner. All of a sudden after about 4 and a half years of having it I started getting intermittent searing pain in the lower left side of my pelvis. sometimes it would happen every few day for a few hours. Other times it would last up to a week with little relief. But I never had more than a few days without any pain at all . At times it would only happen when I was sitting. Other times it would happen when I lay on my side or stand up. It was a debilitating pain unlike anything I have felt before. It ruined a couple family vacations and I went to the ER twice but they said it was placed properly and wouldn’t take it out for me, even though I asked to have it removed. Now that it’s out I’m still having that pain but it’s only been about 12 hours and I’m hoping it goes away soon!

I have had the mirena IUD for two years now and it has been nothing but issues. I chose to get it because I have extremely heavy periods and was tired of dealing with that mess. For a full year i constantly spotted, with little breaks here and there, and now I just never know if it’s my period or just spotting. It is very light, which I appreciate but it lingers for weeks. I have awful cramps, currently, and have them often, and although I used to have a horribly heavy period, my cramps were minimal and now they are awful. Like someone is pulling on my insides. I also have had two cases of cysts and swelling in my left breast. It is so painful, I went to the doctor and they first told me there was nothing, and then when the same thing happened again I received an ultrasound and a mammogram and they believe they are just cysts. I go to a breast surgeon Thursday to get their opinion and see if they need to be removed. I don’t know what is causing this, but the only new thing in my body is Mirena so I wonder if there is a link? I want to remove mirena but I dread my period returning and creating a new obstacle for me with the amount of blood I have without it.

Severe pain (worse than child birth) nausea, vomiting, anxious, and bloated so much I looked several months pregnant. The pain was INDESCRIBABLE!!! When it was removed it tore my uterus and to this day I still have pain during and after sex and bloating. How long does an internal wound take to heal, and will I always hurt now during intercourse for the rest of my life?!!!

I had heavy uncontrolled bleeding, overflow an overnight pad in seconds, for 2 months. The IUD was to stop that bleeding. I was told it could move and embed in other organs before the horribly painful insertion on May 2 2019.

Right after the insertion I felt bloated and it has never gone away, now 6 months later. I also have had cramps at random every day. Could be all day, could be for minutes.

As for controlling my bleeding. Well.. it did stop the hymmrogening bleeding after about a month. But I bleed nearly every day. It could be spotting for an hour or days. It could be heavy period like bleeding for minutes or days. There’s no telling.

I also have sharp, intense pain in my lower uterus when I have strong period cramps or during an organism. Feels like the mirana is stabbing me. My doc seemed unconcerned by all of this. And kept telling me I had to wait 3 months to really see if it was going to regulate my period, then 4 month, then 6 months…

I have also had the back ache, extremely low energy, and depression. I blamed them on other things, but now I wonder…

I also had a fluid filled ultrasound. This is where they inject fluid into your uterus and the do a transvaginal ultrasound. I was warned by the ultrasound person that it would be painful. When the doc came in and said I had an IUD, the ultrasoundist said, “oh then this will be nothing”. Well, it wasn’t nothing hurt as bad as the insertion, but went on for 20 minutes as if still inserting the IUD constantly.

I have an appointment in 4 days with a new doc. I want the IUD gone and I’m going to have an ablation. Shorter recovery than a hysterectomy. Hopefully, the damn thing hasn’t embedded anywhere.

I will not recommend this to anyone for any reason. Do any other form of birth control!

I got mirena on oct 31 2019. I was told that it wouldn’t hurt at all, maybe a little during insertion but that’s all. Almost puked during insertion but like most women I have a very high pain tolerance. I had a horrible stabbing pain deep in my vagina for weeks. It recently came back. When it happens I am debilated and I have found it hard to work or even move. The pain shoots down my left leg and I feel alot of foot pain on the bottom of my left foot. I’ve also been bleeding heavily since insertion. I haven’t been able to feel the strings and am so worried that has moved. I am upset that I was not warned of any of this prior to insertion. Going to the doctor next month . I am really worried

Gyno convinced me to try an IUD to control adenomyosis symptoms (adeno is like endometriosis in the muscle wall of the uterus & can cause severe bleeding). She said side effects would be less than the pill (I had difficult side effects while on the pill). Had Mirena inserted 9/5/19. Didn’t even flinch with insertion. Started bleeding terribly within 2 days but since it was time for my period, I didn’t think much of it. But the bleeding & cramping were awful (worse than what I was having from adenomyosis). I literally had to breathe thru the cramping like I did when in labor (I’ve had 4 natural childbirths with no drugs. I have a high tolerance for pain). I went back to the gyno after suffering pelvic pain for 2 weeks (including vaginal pain, groin pain, left buttock pain, lower back pain). Gyno did a pelvic exam & said everything was fine. Told me I just needed to give the IUD more time to settle, and to come back in a week for ultrasound if I still had problems. Spent one more week in pain. Felt like early stages of labor. Had ultrasound (9/26/19). IUD was down in my cervix. Hence the pain I was experiencing. Gyno removed it the rest of the way. She said I might have spotting afterwards. Well, I was in terrible pain afterwards. Felt like after pains following childbirth. Spent the whole weekend with all kinds of pelvic pain, plus pains that shot down my legs, all the way down to my feet. Unfortunately, I have continued to have chronic pain for 6 months (even though the IUD is no longer in my body).. I saw Gyno again one week post-removal, but she said everything looked fine. Everything was not fine. I was hurting. I couldn’t walk or stand for any length of time. I found a new Gyno. I was on antibiotics for uterine & cervical inflammation for a couple of weeks, which helped a bit but didn’t resolve my pain. My quality of life has been seriously affected. I ended up in the ER in January with stabbing lower pelvic pain & crippling back pain. Diagnosed with acute cystitis. After doing my own research, I pursued a visit with a uro-gyno, who referred me to a PT for pelvic floor therapy. I have pelvic floor dysfunction. All of the pain I’ve been having, plus bladder & bowel disturbances, are all connected to PFD. The IUD triggered all of these issues. PFD is caused by pelvic injury &/or trauma. My pelvic trauma was caused by the IUD & it’s expulsion. I’ve just begun pelvic floor therapy in hopes of getting my life back.
The Mirena has caused much pain & suffering, not to mention medical expenses.

I had Mirena coil inserted in August 2017 to reduce extremely heavy peri-menopausal bleeding. This was done in hospital by a gynaecologist with no explanation of side effects. She suggested it, I said ok, it was done in half an hour. I was 57, very fit and normal weight, no children. It was very painful to have inserted but I stuck out the awful cramps for hours. Overtime heavy bleeding reduced and then stopped after 6 months. First symptom was absolutely no energy. I found it hard to get off the sofa and before this had been active including cycling 100 miles a week. Put it down to low iron levels. Then my left hip began to ache and give way on standing up. Put this down to an early sign that I would need a hip replacement. This went on for months and is ongoing. Then got pain in my buttocks, particularly with prolonged sitting, more pronounced on left side. Sitting is painful in the car, on my office chair and on the sofa. Sleeping is disturbed because it hurts my bum lying down. Pain progressed to back of my legs, again much worse on left side. This is just like sciatica pain and I have disturbed sleep, irritability and anxiety. Then 4 months ago pelvic pain started and worsened with slight bleeding and discharge. In desperation asked friend to research possible causes for pains and he came up with Mirena coil issues. I had absolutely no idea this was a possible cause of pains and serious health problems and was shocked. Phoned GP and got nurse to remove Mirena coil that day, 3 April 2020. This was so painful I was crying out. It had been in for 2.5 years. That was nearly 4 weeks ago. I still have pelvic pain and discharge and slight bleeding. It covers a regular tampon overnight. Antibiotics didn’t work. Still got buttock and leg pain like sciatica on left side, left hip gives way and aches whether sitting or walking. Convinced I have piriformis syndrome. Piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock behind the glutes which sciatic nerve runs past or even through. Something causes this muscle to become inflamed and sore and it then presses on sciatic nerve. I strongly suspect the Mirena coil caused the inflammation. I do Pilates and other stretches daily to try to get pain relief. Last weekend anxiety and pains were so bad I convinced my GP to see me this week even though we are in the middle of lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak and surgery is only doing telephone appointments unless seeing a patient cannot be avoided. Pelvic examination and taking of sample by swab was so painful I couldn’t stand it, and was crying out. She couldn’t get to my cervix.for a swab. Next step is hospital for a scan this week, GP made urgent referral incase it is cancer, again despite hospitals having COVID-19 patients. I am very worried and have no idea if and when I will be free of these awful debilitating symptoms.

Even after the removal I still have leg pain in my upper thighs and cramps in my pelvic area everyday. Before I got the iud I never experienced periods cramps. I also get bv often the a year.

I had a copper iud fitted over 4 years ago as a change to my marina coil which I’d had on and off for 18 years. Initially I didn’t really experience any problems apart from my period being a little heavier. . For over 2 years I experienced strong period and ovulation pains. The next two years had become progressively worse to the point that I was in pain for 3 weeks of the month. I had a constant pain in my left hip, pain coming down my leg and thigh. Period pain and ovulation pains where becoming unbearable to point it was taking my breath away. I started experiencing pain and bleeding after sex. After a consoltation with my Doc she ordered blood, stool and urine samples all came back fine, then followed by a scan of my womb and uterus also came back clear. The pain continued. I’d mentioned could my coil be causing these problems? She thought unlikely as many doctors have said before. I decided to have it out as a process of elimination. 3 weeks later and I’m completely pain free!!!!!!!! I still can’t actually believe that I put up with all this pain for so long. I really though I might have cysts or arthritis to cause my this amount of pain which progressively got worse. Most doctors just don’t seem to believe the side effects caused for some women. Just thought I’d post this as I’d searched many times for answers hoping someone else might be experiencing the same thing. And hope this might help someone else having the same symptoms.

I had Mirena implanted three days ago. I noticed a sharp pain on the left side that night, slight cramping and bleeding the next day. Last night the pain locked up my abdomen stabbed me in the hip area and woke me multiple times from a dead sleep. They removed it at 930 this morning. The pain instantly became bearable. The cold sweats and chills have subsided but my abs are still sore and I can still feel where it was stabbing me. It lessened if I laid on my left side but would start to stab there after about an hour. It was such a crazy hormone and humiliating experience.

I was recommended the Mirena IUD to help with endometriosis pain/symptoms. The implantation was so painful and traumatizing and despite having consistent and severe pains shooting through my tailbone and down my legs, I agreed to keep the IUD in for about two years for fear that the pain of removal would be far worse. After some encouragement and a pain management plan, I finally felt ready to have it removed but am still feeling the repercussions of its effects a year after removal. The IUD damaged my abdominal muscles so severely that I continue to experience pain that mimics ovarian cysts rupturing. I’m just grateful I was able to learn that it was muscular before feeling forced into exploratory surgery as is common with endometrial issues. I just hope this helps those experiencing similar effects so they don’t suffer as long as I allowed myself to.

I’ve had 2 Mirena IUD’s over the past 10+ years and have had just about every issue mentioned above.

After the birth of my 2nd child, I got my first Mirena. My period completely stopped which was awesome. Mirena says that they last for up to 5 years but I still wasn’t having periods so I kept that one for about 7 years. I did have complaints from a couple of boyfriends about the strings scratching their genitals. I don’t know why they call them strings…they’re actually more like wire. I went back to my doctor multiple times to cut the strings shorter and shorter. At the 7 year mark, my doctor was retiring so I decided it was time to get the Mirena out and a new one put in but it was embedded into the tissue. It took 3 or 4 appointments of scraping and digging but it finally came out on our last try. So, Mirena #1 = Scraped penises and around required around 8 doctor appointments. I still considered it a success.

Mirena #2 was put in at that time. This one has not been enjoyable. My periods didn’t go away this time. Gained weight and felt unusually depressed. After a year or two, my OBGYN told me that she couldn’t see the strings. No big deal…I was sure it was up there somewhere. Saw my OBGYN again and still no strings. No amount of searching helped. She told me that an ultrasound would be required to locate it. I still figured no big deal. At this point, my periods were heavier and I did not rely on the Mirena for birth control. Lost healthcare coverage so the ultrasound was not a priority.

Well, the whole ordeal is now a priority!!! I have been bleeding for 2 weeks straight. Heavy gushes of blood where a tampon is useless. I’m wearing a tampon, pad and adult diaper at the moment. I started having large clots as well. Yesterday, I took a shower and like 10 huge clots fell out of me. It was repulsive. I reached in there and tried to get all of them out. Put in a fresh tampon and diaper and took my dog for a stroll. Soaked through everything within 10 minutes. Took another shower last night and reached in to clean out any clots. There were none this time but I felt something really rough. I thought it was a scab from wherever I’m bleeding from. Then it dawned on me that it was the wires! That IUD was lost in me for probably 3 years but it was trying like hell to get out. I think that all the clotting was tissue shedding so the IUD could resurface. I grabbed those wires and gently pulled it out. FREEDOM!

Going to the doctor tomorrow because I’m still bleeding like a scene from “Carrie”. I will not be getting a 3rd one! It’s simply not worth it. It’s a foreign object in your body that can become dislodged which may result in serious health issues and/or pregnancy.

I had the mirena IUD placed immediately after a C-section in June 2021. I had extremely irregular & unpredictable menstrual cycles for about 7 months straight. I had bleeding for 3-4 months after placement. Prior to the insertion of mirena, I had an extremely regular cycle since I began my periods as a preteen, even after pregnancies, my periods went back to regular/normal cycles by the 2nd month after delivery. I could always count on the accuracy/predictable cycles I had & if/when something wasn’t normal based on the slightest change of cycle. I had swelling and bloating instantly with the IUD that is awful every month before and during my periods. My face, neck, upper arms, calves, ankles, feet, and butt noticeably are swollen for 1-2 weeks. Exactly one year after the placement of IUD, in June, I began rapidly Lossing my beautiful think long hair that no doctor could pin point the issue from exams, blood work, and other tests. I have huge bald patches and sections of straggly thin hair that’s taken a massive toll on my anxiety & caused mental distress not finding a reason for months now. I will be getting this removed tomorrow and will hope the hair loss subsides even a little. 70% of my hair is gone since 5 months. I lost eyes lashes as well. However, I have had noticable long hairs all over my face, chin, above my lip, & neck are the worst. I can’t keep up with plucking fast enough. Pain is brutal. The most recent issue began a few months back. Right before my period starts, as I sit down, I get a sudden sharp stabbing pain inside of vaginal area and butt. Goes away when I change position while seated. Ridiculously unmanageable symptoms with the worst of it a year after my IUD placement. I had migraines, dizziness with confusion and lack of coordination/balance slap me out of nowhere at any given moment with no reasons or warnings. It has been terrifying being in public when this happens. It’s normally a few times a month at the same time of rapid hair loss began. I dealt with this for months going to doctors appointments left & right being looked at like I was insane, I was usually treated insignificantly and dismissed. I was told to ask my psychiatrist after I passed testing by different providers and networks. The last thing I can seriously point to and pinpoint all the misery be from the mirena IUD, with the intensity after a year be a deal breaker. I tolerated half the year with all over side effects and health concerns be way off for my system but I have seriously felt this has began giving me neurological issues that aren’t near okay to tolerate or manage. It was never thought by any doctor to be looked into and it’s the only possible cause of something I could’ve legitimately died from as I also suffered a stroke with zero health issues relating except the manufacturers of mirena. I fear going to the ob appt as I expect this to be more mess and some type of issue being damages internally. I’ve never heard a single positive about the hormonal IUDs. Especially mirena. Be careful as I researched time lines after the implant that typically is the most significant red flags and health crisis’s around 10 month marker. Mirena is responsible for taking the feminine out of my body and destroying it piece by piece from the inside out. Next stop is seeing a neurologist while Ive spent months on a waiting list to be seen now so now I’ll get the junk out of my system in the meantime. Hopefully I don’t drop dead after the removal from the toxins expelling and adjustments are smooth. Sneaky nasty toxic medication. Ruined my thoughts on all birth control, tried pills prior that went terrible and this concluded me ever again taking a risk to prevent pregnancy, I’ll go with spermicide and condoms like I used to before being a daily lifestyle choice of hormonally intoxication. Shame on mirena and I’m certain covered up by pharma to keep making money being on the market.

I was having a hysteroscopy done for heavy bleeding and felt a little ambushed/ persuaded by the gynae to have a mirena whilst my legs were in stirrups. So I did. The pain got worse through the day. I almost felt like I was having panic attack by midnight. I pulled it out myself and my symptoms, pelvic pressure, weird feeling in my head, panicky feeling all went instantly. So pleased I could reach the strings and just pull it out. Never again.

I have had the Mirena IUD for a total of 18 years. My first one for 5 yrs, 2nd one for 5 yrs, 3rd one for 8 yrs. I never had any problems until this 3rd one. We never have been able to feel the strings so that made me nervous. I didn’t get my period for 16 yrs and I loved that part of it. I started bleeding again about a year ago and I understood that because my IUD was technically expired. I’ve been meaning to get to the doctor to get it removed. I’ve noticed the last 2-3 years I’ve been depressed, dizzy, lazy, mood swings, and just not feeling happy. Along with leg pains (night time only), back pain, and weight gain. This last weekend I wasn’t feeling well. I had sudden excessive sweating , fatigue, shortness of breath along with pains all around my core area every time I took a breath or moved around. I had no idea what the heck was going on. Sunday night I started bleeding. I woke up in the middle of the night because I was bleeding so much, it was everywhere and I had the worst cramps. I went to the ER and it was a 6 hour wait. Plus my blood clots are ginormous. That afternoon, I’m walking around and it feels like something is sticking me down there. I go to the bathroom and I have a huge blood clot along with my IUD on my pad. I couldn’t believe it. My cramps go away and I actually feel better now that this IUD came out. Go to bed that night and wake up again with a ton of bleeding and clots. I can’t get into a clinic until tomorrow afternoon but I’m super nervous and scared to find out what damage this thing has done to my body.

2010 I had the marina placed six months later, went in for chronic pain that didn’t find anything wrong until I was at the five year mark finally a doctor took it out, but he yanked it out and it had perforated my uterus cause endometriosis to form a connection to my abdomen wall. Now I deal with chronic pain had my son in 2016 four months after the device was taken out I got pregnant.. 2018 I had to have a hysterectomy 2023. I’m still dealing with chronic pain in my right side of my stomach. No doctors can find anything wrong with me but I believe it was connected to that.

I have had the Mirena for about 7 years and it has caused nothing but problems and every time I go to an appointment with my doctor to get it removed there’s always something wrong or some excuse as to why they can’t remove it. Its three years past due to get it removed and even though my doctor knows this and I have told them it was going to end up killing me I still can’t get them to just remove it
