Over the last year, serious concerns have emerged about the widespread use of glyphosate-based weedkillers, with side effects of Roundup and other similar herbicides linked to a risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other cancers.

Monsanto’s promotion of “Roundup Ready” crops has posed a particular problem, leading to skyrocketing use of glyphosate without adequate warnings or safety precautions taken to protect workers or those in the agricultural industry from exposure to the chemical.

REVIEW A CASE

“Roundup Ready” genetically modified crops were introduced by Monsanto in the mid-1990s, which are designed to be resistant to the chemical, allowing weeds to be killed without harming the crop.

The problem with “Roundup Ready” crops is that it encouraged application of high levels of the chemical and some weeds have developed a resistance to glyphosate, leading to the need to use more and more Roundup.

According to a recent report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), more than 2.6 billion pounds of Roundup and other glyphosate-based products were applied to U.S. agricultural land between 1992 and 2012.

This poses a particular health concern for farm workers throughout the U.S., since the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determined last year that Roundup and glyphosate are probable carcinogens.

The “Roundup Ready” problem is made worse because those exposed to glyphosate were not provided warnings about this potential health risk, resulting in inadequate safety precautions being taken for those exposed to Roundup.

It appears that Monsanto knew or should have known about the cancer problems and “Roundup Ready” consequences, yet withheld this information from consumers and the agricultural community. As a result of the company’s apparent decision to place their desire for profits before public health and safety, workers throughout the U.S. faced an unnecessary and avoidable risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma or other cancers.

We used the round up on our 500 acres farm for about 15 years. Use on about everything: My son 44 just past away last year from a stroke: But when they went to retrieve his organs they found that the kidneys were completely destroyed with cancer> Now I seems to be getting a server muscle problems in my hands shoulders and legs, pretty much all over. i am 67. We were in the spray over the years quite a lot. between the mixing and mainly being in the fields when spraying. We always washed up good after and wash our clothes. But we still had the spray on us for several hrs. sometimes. Could this spray maybe caused his cancer or my muscle problem. i see my doctor next week and see what see has to say. I know several time when I worked with the spray my hands did get very stiff or my fingers would lock up and very painful and hard to move. let me know what you think. thanks wayne
