Our product liability lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) lawsuits for women who have been diagnosed with this serious condition after receiving a Mirena IUD birth control implant or the Depo-Provera birth control shot. It appears that inadequate warnings were provided for women about the risk that side effects may cause a dangerous increase in pressure around the brain.

Also commonly referred to as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is a potential side effect of the Mirena IUD and the Depo-Provera shot, which may cause problems symptoms similar to a tumor, such as:

  • Blindness
  • Blurred Vision, Double Vision or Blind Spots
  • Severe Headaches or Migraines
  • Tinnitus, or Ringing in the Ears
  • Papilledema, or Swelling of the Optic Disk
  • Nausea, Vomiting or Dizziness

To review whether you or a loved one may be entitled to financial compensation as a result of the manufacturers’ apparent decision to place their desire for profits before the safety of women using the birth control products, request a free consultation and claim evaluation.

Steps To A Pseudotumor Cerebri Lawsuit

Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) or idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is typically diagnosed after an MRI, CT Scan and/or lumbar puncture to rule out other causes of vision problems from the pressure on the brain.

REVIEW A CASE

To begin the process of finding out whether you or a family member may have a case for injuries caused by Mirena IUD or Depo-Provera shot, call our pseudotumor cerebri lawyers toll free at 1-800-522-0102 or complete the information form on this page.

A member of our law firm will contact you to review the circumstances surrounding your case and evaluate whether we can establish a connection between the diagnosis of PTC/IIH and Mirena or Depo-Provera.

Requesting a consultation and claim review does not form an attorney-client relationship, and there is no obligation to pursue a lawsuit after having your potential case evaluated. The request simply begins the review process to determine whether you or a family member may be entitled to compensation.

Often a determination is made during your initial telephone interview.  If we believe you may be entitled to compensation, it is your decision whether you wish to move forward with the investigation of your case.

Sometimes it is necessary that we review the circumstances surrounding your claim in further detail with our experts and litigation committee before we can determine if we are able to pursue a claim.  If that is the case, you will be contacted shortly with our final determination.

After we evaluate your potential Mirena or Depo-Provera case, it remains your decision whether to hire our pseudotumor cerebri law firm to move forward with a case on your behalf.

If you decide to move forward with a case, there are no out-of-pocket costs or expenses associated with hiring our lawyers. All cases are handled on a contingency fee basis, which means that we only receive an attorney fee or reimbursement of expenses if a recovery is obtained in your case.

Contingency fees allow you to obtain the best and most experienced representation with no out of pocket expenses, and there are no fees unless you win.

  • Annie says:

I was on the depo shot for a year and had continuous bleeding until they switched me to another birth control, in the year 2009 is when I was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebri Lawsuit, I had the extreme headaches that caused eye sight damage, dizziness, sensitive hearing, swelling in my eyes. I had a spinal tap which is where the ER doctor discovered that the fluid that was built up was WAY beyond the normal amount, demanded that I stop taking the birth control I was taking and told me to never take birth control again. In 2009 I saw a neurologist that put me on medication which I was on until the end of 2011. Recently, I had another episode and had to reach out to a neurologist to place me back on the medication, where I am currently under the care of that neurologist. In 2009 I was near death which was scary for me and my family.

I have all the the symptoms listed above, with the test to back it up. When discussing with my doctor about being on the depo shot from 13 to 18 as a requirement for foster care cause I was sexual active. The doctor said sense they ruled out everything else, it very well could be the problem. So what can I do or what do I have to do to get someone to help me, I’m loosing everything my home, I’m not allowed to work and I have been denied by SSI so I have to appeal. I live with in pain every day, some days I can’t see to go anywhere, I fall because of my balance is off. The pressure behind my eyes and in my head wakes me up at night and makes it hard to fall asleep.

I started receiving the depo. shot back in 1995, right after I gave to my first child. I continued to receive the shots for about 2 years. Shortly after stopping the shot(due to no menstrual). I had never had as much as a headache, I found out I was pregnant with my second child. Durning my first trimester I had a migraine everyday. Long story short it has been 18 years now I have been diagnosed as having chronic migraines and I have savior back pain with no help nor end in sight. I just want help.

I got the depo shot in 1997 and only did one shot, had all the side effects so I stopped. Headaches never went away though. Got laid off from my job so went back to school and couldn’t see the board so went to eye Dr for glasses said my optic nerve was severely swollen and then went to neurologist where I was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri. Put me on diamox til I lost my insurance. Been fighting headaches for 19 years now. Some days were so bad I couldn’t function. The best I ever felt was after I got a spinal tap I felt like a totally different person for a couple days but who can afford to get that done multiple times? People don’t understand it and I don’t wish it on anyone!

  • Kira says:

I was on the depo shot until I had to have a hysterectomy at 22 then at 28 I was diagnosed with intercranial hypertension and psuedotumor cerebri. I ended up having to get a shunt installed for the excess spinal fluid building up and putting pressure on my brain. Throughout all this I’ve been dealing with non stop headaches and migraines. I’ve been bed bound with non stop headaches for at least 5 years. On a scale of 1 to 10 in pain I live my life at a 5 for “good days” and 7 is where it sits most the time and can go up to a 9.5 on my bad days. If you think I might be a good candidate for any sort of help. Please let me know. Thank you.

I never heard of that disease. But I took the depo shot. I became ill within hours of injection. This occurred the summer of 99. Some of my symptoms are very similar. The same day of having the injection. I had blurr, double vision, shortness of breath, loss of coronation and severe headaches. My symptoms worsen after that very several years to where I couldn’t take care of myself any longer. I was put on a vent with breathing tube in my throat, feeding, in a wheelchair. As time went on doctors couldn’t figure what was wrong with me. With all the test ran known to man, Some doctors couldn’t not pin point it. I was even writen off that I would pass away from unknown neurological disease. Most doctors consider the depo shot because I was a healthy 21yr old woman until July 9 1999. Some that I have took some type of street drug. But I dont drink or smoke. So, I was a Mystery Case but the clues was staring them in the face. It was the depo shot. They didn’t agree with it until doctor from over sea made the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, In which it was caused by the injection of the depo shot. In the results of that I am on Cell Cept for the rest of my life.

My first DEPO shot was administered within TWO HOURS of delivering my first child. I gained 50 lbs within 30 days and had a cycle for 9.5 months STRAIGHT. After the third shot, my mom and husband begged me not to take it again. I have experience a plethora of health issues, not knowing what is or isn’t related. The worst headache episode lasted 19 days, I’ve never been able to lose the weight gained, and the ear ringing, thumping and episodes of extreme muting are driving me nuts. I just want to live a day without pain or difficulty.

I got the Depo proverba shot one time. During the 7 day waiting period I was in so much pain I could hardly move. I was stuck in the fetal position for about a week in tears. went to the Emergency Room and they refused to believe it had something to do with depo. before hand I had never experienced this amount of pain. I had almost all the symptoms above while on it. They faded away quickly. And now I believe the shot has made me infertal. And possibly given me PCOS. It’s been 6 years since I got it. I am no longer regular. Now I go up to 130 days without a period. Before this traumatic shot everything was normal.

I had the depo shot from around 1995-2000. After I discontinued the shot I started having severe stomach issues, dizziness and eye problems. None of which they can find the problem. The dizziness they are guessing is hypoactive unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction. I’m so tired of how this has affected my life and doctors all look at me as if I’m making it up. I have always said I felt it was related to the depo but they all are quick to say no. I never had any of these problems before the depo.

  • Ashley says:

I was on depo provera from age 15-20 and although I had headaches before then after being on the shot I started experiencing Intense chronic migraines With nausea and vomitting along with vision disturbance. I was told that the shot would give me mild headaches and some weight gain but that was it so that’s why I continued taking them. I soon figured out that the shots were my cause of misery but it was too late because even after I stopped taking them it was too late I still have the symptoms. At times I feel like my brain is swollen and is going to burst out of my skull, along with fullness in my eyes and vision disturbance. It affects my everyday life and I quit my job in June of 2016 because of the migraines and neck pain. I was never diagnosed with anything except migraines but I also thought it was something more. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Karen says:

I have had 3 Mirenas since 2001. The first two worked fine, but missed the connection between IUD complications and the symptoms I was suffering from. I have hesitated to pursue legal action, but wonder if Mirena was the cause of my illness. I had my 3rd Mirena placed in 2012 or 13. I slowly developed nausea and severe back and rib pain. I am in health care, so I went to the chiropractor, but no relief. I began missing work due to the severe pain, and the nausea turned to daily vomiting…sometimes 10 to 15 times per day. I worked and spent the rest of my day in bed. Finally in 2015 I went to the ER and was informed that there were cysts and a mass in my abdomen and my liver enzymes were elevated. I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience….

I used the depo shot in the past for 4 years back in 1999 to about 2003. I stopped using the shot because of excessive weight gain and headaches. I recently two years ago had a lower back injury that I believe is caused by my degenerative spine, heard that people who were on it were having trouble with bone loss. I also recentley started having a lot of trouble with my eye sight and I’m not sure if this is related but sounds like it could be. I have a felt like I get a lot of pressure in my head as well. I have also had some breast issues with a lot of cyst not sure if that is related

I took the depo shot starting Jan 2001, I only had 2 shots, but I had a cycle for 10 months continually, had major mood swings, very bad depression. I gained weight, which threw off my thyroid which I now take medicine for. I have irregular heartbeats especially at night
I also have blurred vision and dizziness, which they diagnosed me with vertigo, and now take medication for that as well. Sometimes the vertigo is so bad, I need help going up the stairs to the bathroom, and have been in bed for several days due to the dizziness. I do get miragrines at least once a month. I have severe leg and back pain since.

I was on the depo shot for over a year and I had nothing but constant bleeding, for months at a time! I had a migraine almost daily which caused me to miss a lot of work. I have gained so much weight from it and now my knees are weak and it feels like I have no strength in my bones. I am constantly tired and sick. I have since gotten off of it recently but the side effects from that are much of the same.. bleeding and everything hurting. I wish I had never taken this shot.

  • Debi says:

I took depo in 1993/1997 off and on. I was diagnosed with pseudo tumor in 1998 and had nine vp shunts which caused spinal meningitis from so many surgeries in a little over a month so the doctor then placed lp shunts and I had those revised 14 times in the next two months. I lost my vision, I am legally blind now I have no parithol vision. I lost my career then and had to go on disability. I had optical nerve sleuth fenastration on both eyes and I was told back then every pseudo patient on the floor at the nuero surgery unit had one thing in common, deplo vera shots. I contacted a lawyer then and they basically told me there was no way to sue. I lost 3 pregnancies due to the pressure on my platuatory gland ( I think that’s what it was), I had to have a historectomy as well. In 2003 I had another shunt revised and my pseudo tumor was under control until 2018. The doctors say it don’t last but I had another brain surgery in January after my spinal pressure was 45, and this shunt is not working. My lp shunts worked better but now most doctors will only do vp shunts. I have suffered and my adult life has been waisted on sickness, pain medication, and having to be cared for instead of me doing the caring.
I am not a big person, the doctors tell me I’m not Ms Psuedo Tumor. I never have been. I get 20 pounds over weight and my whole body gets sick. I consulted a lawyer two years ago and they said probably too many years gone by for anything to be done. Not any records. Once again, that’ is my story. The lawyer says there’s no way to sue. If anyone can help get me justice, reach out! I feel so helpless and alone. And angry! I have gone through my whole adult life dealing with this , warning teens to stay away from the depo and in the end I get no help or relief. I am still suffering. Now I have to wait to pay the hospital bills down before I can get another spinal tap or shunt and my eyes are getting worse everyday.

My 27 year old daughter passed away after having her mirena removed. She suffered from the mirena crash. Her demise was a blood clot going to the back of her head and caused a brain herniation and stroke. She had the mirena in for 5 months. She suffered from all the side effects the entire time. A healthy 27 year old doesn’t just fall dead. It was this mirena. She left an 8 year old son and a family that is devastated.

I have just recently found answers about this problem I have been experiencing for over a year at least. My doctors haven’t even figured it out yet. They finally found out after all my complaints that my prolactin levels are high which indicate I have a brain tumor of the pituitary. I have an MRI scheduled because of it. So I decided to get any my IUD removed as a suspected way to counter the effects of this tumor. When reading how the IUD affects the brain days before removal, I found this Pseudo-tumor cerebri condition which explains everything I have been suffering with and complaining about for a years. If u want your birth control out then get it out ladies because your doctors may try to tell u to keep it in. Don’t listen anyone about what is best for u. I hope these issues wont be life long and I hope I will be able to have a child one day.
