How Do I Participate in the Class Action for Mirena IUD Birth Control Problems?

31 ADD YOUR COMMENTS

ANSWER

Thousands of women throughout the United States have filed a lawsuit after experiencing complications with Mirena IUD, including issues with migration of the implanted birth control and side effects that may result in a dangerous buildup of fluid pressure in the skull, known as pseudotumor cerebri (PTC).

While similar allegations have been brought by women nationwide, each case is an individual claim and not part of a Mirena class action lawsuit.

Given similar questions of fact and law, the federal court system has established two separate consolidated proceedings, one for “>perforation/migration injuries and another for pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits.

While these multidistrict litigations (MDLs) are handled in a coordinated manner to reduce duplicative rulings into similar issues in the separate claims and eliminate conflicting rulings from different judges, the process is different from a class action for Mirena, where all claims would be litigated through one class representative

The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are continuing to review and evaluate potential claims for women throughout the United States who have been diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri or idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Additional cases are no longer being accepted for perforation or migration injuries..

To find out if you or a family member may be entitled to financial compensation through a Mirena suit, request a free consultation and claim evaluation.

After submitting our confidential form on-line, you will be contacted to discuss the circumstances surrounding your claim. If it is determined whether we believe we can causally connect an injury suffered by yourself or a family member to the Mirena IUD, it is your decision whether to hire one of our Mirena lawyers.

Mirena IUD Class Action vs. MDL

In April 2013, the Mirena perforation litigation was centralized in the Southern District of New York as part of an MDL, or Multidistrict Litigation. In 2018, a global settlement agreement was reached to resolve these cases.

A second consolidated MDL was established for all pseudotumor cerebri cases in early 2017, and this litigation remains in the early stages of discovery and bellwether trials.

An MDL has many of the advantages commonly associated with a class action, allowing a large number of individuals to pursue a claim against a common defendant through a process that increases efficiency and lowers the costs of litigation. However, unlike a class action, each claim is evaluated based on the individual injuries suffered by the plaintiff, not through one class representative.

Each case remains an individual lawsuit, and any Mirena settlement agreement reached will be based on the circumstances for that woman, accounting for the pain and suffering caused by the IUD. In addition, when any offers are received, each client retains the right to decide whether to settle their case or proceed to trial.

Since each plaintiff must establish that their use of Mirena birth control caused the alleged injury and that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn about the risk of side effects, it is very important to have a qualified Mirena class action attorney representing your interests.

FIND OUT IF YOU QUALIFY FOR A MIRENA SUIT

The attorneys at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential claims on behalf of women who have experienced the following complications from the Mirena IUD:

  • Headaches
  • Vision Floaters
  • Blindness
  • Other Symptoms of Fluid Pressure in the Brain

All cases are pursued on a contingency fee basis by our Mirena attorney, which means that there are never any out of pocket fees or expenses, and we get paid nothing unless we win your case. To review a potential claim for yourself or a family member, request a free consultation and claim evaluation.

I had the mirena for almost a year. It was very painful when it was placed and I had pains in my legs while I had the iud. I also sufferd pain during intimacy. I went to my doctor and explained my concerns about the iud and had it removed. Once it was removed I had severe bleeding for almost 6 weeks and my doctor ordered a ultrasound. I found out I now have ovarian cysts. I had to go back for repeat ultrasounds every six weeks, and I continued to have another cyst each time. Since having it removed I suffer from severe cramping, which I believe to be from recurring ovarian cysts.

I am one of the 1st women they implanted (in the WTC, Knysna Private Hospital) in RSA. I was &^#^ed over by the people/power behind the Marina. I have to add that I had an hysterectomy as result of a MARINA-domino-effect.

ALSO, more importantly – I have a series of problems as result of the MARINA if wish to discuss with a doctor who does not feel the need to protect the MARINA “brand”

My mirena caused me pain every couple weeks. That’s because it had become partly imbedded in my uterus. It took 3 separate visits to get it removed (the strings were also gone) and my doctor had to dig it out with a metal hook. One of the most painful things I’ve ever felt and the room looked like a crime scene when they were done. DO NOT GET THE MIRENA!

I have 2 sisters that was on the Mirena Iud and this year they both lost their babies both were 2 months old when they died. My nephew died from SIDS and my niece was born with an enlarged heart and after two months at home she died from a blood clot that went from her leg to her heart. I really think this is from the Mirena.

I’ve had the mirena iud for about 18 months now. Never did my doctor really give me vital information on this iud I was just told it worked.I regret not taking the initiative in finding out more since I’ve gotten the mirena I’ve had horrible abdominal pain leg cramps and irregular bleeding.I can no longer find my strings but do not have the money or insurance to get it checked the pain gets so bad I’ve literally been doubled over crying in public unable to move. I’m not sure how much longer I can take this. I sincerely hope it’s nothing serious that I’ve read about but I most definetley am going to have it removed soon. I just can’t take the pain any longer. What’s crazy is I just found out about the lawsuits against mirena .

I had the mirena placed around June- I was told my periods would become shorter and lighter if not stop. For my six week check up I was told I needed to have an ultrasound done because my strings could not be found. The tech found several large ovarian cysts and my strings were gone but my iud remained in place. I was told I will need it surgically removed. My periods are longer and more painful. I get pains in my lower back and legs. I am left lifeless during menstruation with a heating pad and over the counter pain meds. Now after reading these I fear more problems in the future and contemplate removal.

Hello I am 23, Ive been on mirena since Feb of this year. On Sunday i found out was pregnant on Monday I made and appt to get it taken out and they told me to come in as soon as I got off work. I did so. They did an ultrasound and said my mirena is not in my uterus but its in my cervix. Baby is in my uterus and I’m 6 weeks tomorrow. They told me they cannot remove the IUD BC of chance to miscarry. They also tried to do a exam and they couldn’t find any strings or anything. Im really worried. We were in shock to find out I was pregnant but now were really worried about what could happen to me or baby. Any advice?!?!?!?! We need more info. The drs didn’t tell me much and I need some insight to know whether our baby will be OK. I’ve went through one miscarriage I really don’t wanna lose another baby.

I was going on a LONG backpacking trip in the wilderness and wanted my painful periods to stop. Someone recommended the Mirena. I almost blacked out during insertion (had to try twice to get it in due to cervix being so tight), had hysterical outbursts where I’d start sobbing for no reason, insane cramping (to the point I missed a lot of work) and, for the first time in my life, started having serious anxiety issues that would sometimes escalate to full blown panic attacks that were so bad that I even called the ambulance because I thought I was having a stroke. I gained almost 50 lbs even though I was hiking 15-20 miles a day. Lost my libido. They said after 3 months, hormones should even out. They didn’t. Got it removed and now I’m struggling with vertigo around my period (which I NEVER had before) and such bad acne that I don’t want to see anyone. Weight refuses to come off and I’m the fattest I’ve been, despite healthy diet and exercise. Doctors kept saying that the Mirena doesn’t do what I say it does yet I keep seeing similar stories such as these online.

I had my mirena iud placed in July of 2007 and had to have it surgically removed Aug 2010 because it passed thru my uterine wall and embedded in my stomach. Since I’ve had problems with weight loss, headaches, and mood disorders. It wasn’t worth the pain of putting it in or getting it removed.

I had 2 consecutive mirenas totaling 11 years (one started in for 6 years) from age 19 to 31. At age 31 (this year) while still having my last mirena in, i started having extreme pain in my right side, which emergency room visit showed to be bleeding cyst. The cyst was bigger than ovary causing it to twist my ovary. I had to have surgery removing one ovary and my appendix. I also get migraine type headaches but don’t have health insurance to get further testing done to see what causes them.

I was introduced to the mirena iud earlier this year. After receiving the mirena I have experienced many side effects. Headaches, Loss of hair (I had to cut my hair off due to coming out in hand fulls), bleeding for 6 months, acne, yeast & uti infections consistently. I recently had to get the device removed and a partial hysterectomy. I was in so much pelvic pain and went to the doctor. I was told my uterus was enlarged along with 3 fibroids. I never had these issues prior to getting the mirena. It was all bad, I have to consult with a urologist because even after removing the mirena blood is still in my urine. There’s so much pressure in my lower stomach. Not sure what’s going on till my doctors appointment next week. My hair was past my shoulders and I had to cut it as short as my pinky finger. I really encountered a horrible experience with this mirena. Its so many horrible stories why is this device still fda approved? Not a good look.

I had the IUD inserted 3 years ago, and since June 2018 I have bleeding ONLY during sexual intercourse. Recently went to OBGYN, he ran STD, Blood test, cultures and everything came back Normal. I removed the IUD two weeks ago, and I have been bleeding non stop every day. My doctor told me that my cervix is protruding out, when he was checking my cervix. He burned it and said it should stop the bleeding, next few days I was bleeding more, so I go back to the doctor. He does ultra sound, and says he sees small Polyps in my uterus. I recommends me to wait a few more days, if bleeding continues, he will do surgery to remove them. I am going to get a second opinion. I know this is all due to the IUD Mirena device. I am going to file a class action lawsuit. I have the evidence to prove this.

I got the Mirena Iud in January of 2011. It was painful getting it inserted. I bled on and off the first few weeks then my periods vanished. I would literally spot 1 maybe 2 times in one day and that would be the end of my period. I would get a period once every 4-5 months. I didn’t haveajor complications but sex was painful and I always had cramps and pelvic pain. I got my 2nd Mirena Iud in February of 2018. HUGE MISTAKE!!!! The 2nd device totally damaged my body. I got the device in February and had to get a golf ball size cyst removed in April! Almost 3 months after getting the 2nd device put in! Since the 2nd device, I have headaches every single day, I’m weak and tired all the time, my lower back always hurts and I have pelvic pain a lot!! It’s very painful when I have sex with my boyfriend and he has to be very easy because it’s to painful for me. He can also feel the strings during sex and they bother him. My insurance is messed up and I haven’t been able to get to my doctor. I’m supposed to get monthly pelvic exams but haven’t had insurance. As Soon as I can see her then I am getting this Mirena Iud removed and will never get it again! I’m just ready to get it out ASAP!!!

After I had my third child (2 girls and 1 boy) my doctor suggested I get the Mirena IUD as a form of birth control and to regulate my menstrual period. Of course I trust my doctor therefore I took his advice and got the IUD put in and that was in March 2005. Within the next 2&12 to 3 years I was having some unusual complications and had no idea why they were happening. I bled for almost an entire year straight, with a few weeks here and a few weeks there adding up to about 2 months, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, Endometriosis, and excruciating constant pain especially during sexual intercourse. My doctor tried countless different treatments and I was put on prescription pain medication, which barely knocked the edge off the pain, and nothing worked. So finally the only option I had left was surgery. I ended up having 5 surgeries with a year and a half. The first surgery was the removal of the IUD. The second was removal of the ovarian cysts. The third was a D & C. After having those three I still was not right which therefore led to the forth surgery of a partial hysterectomy hoping that my problems would be fixed. Well, NO, they weren’t so my last and final option was to have the fifth surgery, the other partial hysterectomy. Needless to say I no longer have any female organs left in my body which has now caused and does cause on a daily basis a whole new set of problems. I hope that everything I went through all because I wanted birth control and was never told about any of the dangerous side effects that I can help prevent another female from possibly going through the same hell as I did and still do on a daily basis. I can only wish I had the information I have now.

How do I become a participant in the Mirena (IUD) Class Action?

  • Heather says:

I had the Mirena IUD placed in 2013 when I was 23 years old and I experienced terrible side effects. Right away I had a period for 6 weeks straight immediately following the implantation. I never had another period after that… to this day. I weighed 125lbs when I got the implant. Slowly I noticed things were off but I brushed it off, thinking it was in my head. By the one year mark I was miserable, my face was broken out like a pubescent teen (I’ve never had much acne before this) I gained 20lbs with zero lifestyle changes, I started finding dark hairs in strange places on my body where they had never existed before, and my mood swings were off the charts. I had no control of my emotions, I had never experienced this level of depression in my life, I had nothing to be sad about (other than my terrible acne and weight gain) but I was contemplating suicide daily.
I returned to my doctor and told them something was very wrong, I expressed my concerns and laid out all of my symptoms, I was a total wreck and told them I believed the Mierna was the cause and wanted it removed. My doctor assured me this was not possible and the things that were happening to me were just because I was getting older… ( really?.. a 24 year old woman gains 20lbs in less than year, breaks out in cystic acne, and finds masculine hairs in strange places and that’s “normal aging” :/ ) I think not. But I bought it for the time being.
The symptoms got worse, I was completely falling apart and thought I was losing my mind. I finally started doing some real digging of my own and found other women complaining of similar issues so I decided I had had enough. I made an appointment to have it removed and they fought me every step of the way. 2 nurses and 2 doctors tried to talk me out of it, saying I was overreacting and wrongly diagnosing myself. Literally I was laying on the table with my legs in the stirrups arguing with this doctor to take this POISON out of me! So I truly believe the Mirena repping is a real thing. No one wanted to help me, no one wanted to fulfill my wishes, it was like being in the Twilight Zone.
Needless to say, after that I found a new doctor. I waited 6 months to get on a new birth control because I wanted to give the hormones from the Mirena time to get out of my system. 6 months passed, still no period and by this point I weighed 160lbs. (still no change to my diet or lifestyle, also being vegan most of my life hasn’t made it hard for me to stay in shape up until my encounter with Mirena.) After burning through 5 different oral contraceptives and another year of my life wasted I finally found a birth control that worked for me without side effects. At this point it has now almost been 4 years with out a period, almost 2 years off of the Mirena. My doctors did blood tests, hormone tests, vaginal ultrasounds etc. trying to determine the cause of my lack of a period. No cause was ever determined, but she then diagnosed me with PCOS claiming my problems were stemming from that. I never had PCOS before this, I had my first period when I was 9 years old and had a regular healthy period for nearly 15 years before the Mirena.
Guess what happened after removing the Mirena… my mood stabilized, with almost no effort my weight went back down to 135lbs, the acne and weird body hair went away. Weird right? Im sure it had nothing to do with the Mirena (insert sarcasm here). I now take medication and oral contraceptives for PCOS and basically live in a menopausal state, still with no period at 29 years old and routine check ups and ultrasounds to see if I’m ovulating… spoiler alert. I’m not. Thanks Mirena.
Also, I have no children, and was not made aware of how painful the insertion and removal would be, I get now why they recommend it to someone who’s already had a child… wish I would’ve gotten that warning.

I’ve gotten the (IUD) Mirena In 2017.. it was implanted for 2 years. I found out I was pregnant and couldn’t keep it for a lot of reasons.. When I was getting an abortion the Dr asked me if I was on any birth control. I told her yes the Mirena . After receiving the abortion the Dr told me that the Mirena was no where to be found. They had given me a ultra sound to see if it was still inside . They had found an unknown object lodged under my rib cage . When I went for a second opinion at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, they had given me two X rays to see what the Dr at the abortion clinic had seen and yes it was lodged under my rib cage, they were asking me questions like “ How ? And why? I had no answers I didn’t know how it would be under there . That was the reason why I had become pregnant . They told me that in order to take it out . They would have to make a small incision through my bellybutton to remove it before my tissue grows over it and it would become impossible to remove ..
