QUESTION

What are Symptoms of Infection from Mirena IUD Birth Control?

ANSWER

The Mirena IUD (intrauterine device) is a form of birth control that is inserted into the vagina to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. However, a number of women have suffered severe infections from Mirena side effects, potentially arising months or even years after the device is implanted if the IUD perforates the uterine wall and migrates outside the uterus.

Lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are no longer accepting new cases for Mirena IUD infections. This page is maintained for informational purposes only.

While there there is a known infection risk of associated with insertion of the Mirena IUD, it appears that Bayer Healthcare failed to provide women with adequate warning about the potential risk of other infections that may result from Mirena complications long after the device is in place. As a result, financial compensation was pursued through Mirena infection lawsuits by women throughout the United States. New cases are no longer being accepted.

Mirena IUD Infection Symptoms

Insertion of the Mirena IUD has been associated with a known risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which usually will happen within the first 21 days after insertion. However, a number of women have developed Mirena IUD infections months or even years after the device was implanted due to complications associated with the IUD perforating the uterus or migrating to other areas of the body.

If the Mirena IUD moves from the intended position and migrates through the uterine wall, infection is likely to set in if the condition is not promptly diagnosed.

As a result of Bayer failing to provide warnings about the risk of this problem, many women do not discover that the IUD strings are missing or that the device has migrated until they start to develop signs of an infection.

Potential symptoms of a Mirena IUD infection may include:

  • Abnormally Late Menstrual Period
  • Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Flu-Like Symptoms
  • Missing IUD String
  • Painful Sexual Intercourse

Bacterial vaginosis has been found to develop among users of Mirena IUD, which involves an imbalance of good and harmful bacteria in the vagina. Women with IUDs are one of the groups most commonly found to develop bacterial vaginosis infections, which often results in the need to remove the Mirena IUD. The infection is often treated with antibiotics, but that is no guarantee that the infection will not come back.

I had the Mirena IUD in 2007 and I had it for about 9 months. Intercourse was extremely painful and my husband always told me he could feel the device. When it was time for my menstrual cycle that too was horribly uncomfortable. Cramps were unbearable and my cycle was very irregular. I finally went to the Dr and when he removed it he said I had developed vaginosis and that it would heal on its own. Almost immediately after the device was removed I felt a whole lot better but those 9 months were hell.

I had the coil in for about two years, at first it was great as I had no periods, but I found sex painful, I would bleed afterwards, I have also had constant water infections and BV, I have visited my GP on numerous occasions where I am on antibiotics nearly every other week. I have terrible bloated ness and pains down my left arm, the BV is constant and is causing a strain on my marriage as the smell is like gone off fish! The doctors don’t seem to do anything and say it’s normal with a coil?… I have bad cramps and I can’t wait to get this taken out. Plus I’ve put a stone in weight on and mood swings are very odd happy then in tears….I’m def coming back as a man in my next life…….

I’ve had the mirena iud for 2 years now. At first it was the best thing that ever happened to me.. My periods were fewer but much more painful than prior to having the iud. The first year, I had no complaints except that my iud would hurt the tip of my mans penis.. That of course became problematic after a while. I eventually stopped having a period regularly and instead it would come 3-4 months apart . I loved not having a period but I constantly worried about whether or not my body was cleaning itself out with not having a period so often. Year 2 was totally different. I was getting bv everytime my man and I would have sex. I’d have to wait a week in between each time we had sex due to the 7 day treatment. I would get bv almost 2-3 times a month. I always freaked out because the smell is so horrible. Self conscious about the smell so I couldn’t have sex with my man because I noticed that when I did, the smell would become worse. I went to the doctors so frequently and they kept telling me that it was something that I was doing.. I’m 25 years old, I take very well care if myself especially in that area. All the years prior to bv, I’d never had bv. In fact, I had no idea what it was until it kept reoccurring.. I removed the iud and I haven’t had bv ever since.

I LOVE the IUD! This is my 3rd time having it. I get it changed out every 5yrs. I dont get my period only bad thing is the BV. But, my Doc presecribes the prescription for it & it goes away. This is the only birth control method that has worked for us. My husband likes it i like it. I have gotten pregnant using other birth controls. Can’t use the Depo shot, my body did not take it well. This is the best thing for me.

I had mirena inserted after having my daughter in January
This year because my bleeding never stopped I have just come out of hospital to which my local gp thought that I had appendicitis as my cramps were that bad I got sent to the hospital straight away I went through a lot of testing and a painful ct scan just to find out that I had caught a infection from the mirena I also had to transfer hospitals because the hospital I went to couldn’t remove it went to the women’s where I had to b on three lots of antibiotics via the drip I have just come out of hospital yesterday and I’m still on antibiotics two diffident ones and something for the nausea I have been sick as a dog while on it it did nothing to stop my bleeding and it’s made me feel even worse since it’s been removed the drs had to put in implanon in and have to go back to hospital again in a couple of weeks to have a procedure I think that mirena sucks and I would never say otherwise

I had the IUD inserted this April 2014 and everything was great until recently. I notice that having intercourse was painful and also spotting right after. About 2 weeks now I was having really bad cramps that I couldnt handle. Made an appt to the obgyn and was checked, IUD is still in place but apparently now I have an infection in my uterus. Was soo mad because my doc was asking me if i have multiple partners. Because most people get infection in the uterus due to std’s. Reaslly i was tested before IUD insertion and it was negative obviously. Now on two antibiotics and not doing well. Glad that I started looking up online to see if anyone has had an infection in the uterus due to the IUD.

I had the mirena iud put in at my drs request. The first two months were extremely uncomfortable and painful. I had a bv infection for over a month. I had to take 3 different kinds of antibiotics and yeast infection pills to cure it. It’s been a month now and the bv has returned. I want to get this iud out but when I talk to drs they suggest that i wait. I never had bc prior to having the iud inserted.

I had the mirena iud placed July 22nd 2014 and removed November 3rd 2014. I bled the entire time and had serious cramps, nausea, vomiting, and foul odor no matter what I did. My PCP thought it was an infection in my intestines. I made several visits to the OBGYN whom placed the Mirena and several phone calls because I felt like something was wrong. He did an ultrasound and said it was still placed where it should be. Although I had more cysts than I had to start with. I made an appointment and told them to take it out, I was not happy with how it made me feel. I changed my OBGYN December 8th and the very first visit she said the Mirena had caused an infection inside my uterus. She has had an ultrasound done as well and I am awaiting the results. In the meantime I am on 1000mg antibiotics for 5 days. This was not the best decision for birth control for me however, the reason for having it placed was to help with the cyst problem to prevent the need for surgery.

I’ve had unbearable pain since I’ve gotten Mirena. Honestly, I wouldn’t refer Mirena to anyone. The only good thing I can say thus far is the decrease of my menstrual flow

Wow! I’m so glad I read these comments as we all have something or other on common when it comes to the side effects of the Mirena iud. The first time I had the Mirena inserted I had no problems for 5 years. However During THIS 5 Years I was not sexual active. Then the 2nd insertion I began a relationship about the 2nd year and began to get BV and yeast infections. When I asked to have it removed my doctor insisted that I try “at home” remedies such as inserting boric acid tabs, using Refresh PH, etc. But the infections continued. My 3rd Mirena was inserted just last May 2013. Since I chose to take a break from intimacy with my boyfriend of 4 years, I did not get any infections but bled everyday for almost a month. Again when I decided to get the device removed, my doctor talked me out of it. We’ll since Valentines night 2014, I’ve been battling infections and am totally fed up! It’s coming out asap! I can’t take this anymore. I’m depressed, can’t lose weight, and irritable as hell!

My GYN recommended Mirena, he swore up and down on it at my 6 week post-partum check up visit. From day one, until 16 months after I had it FINALLY removed, I had to wear a pantyliner, the worst, most embarrassing, foul discharge. It put a damper on my marriage. I had excruciating hip pain, I had sciatic pain that was completely unexplainable. I gained 40 lbs AFTER my daughter was born. Totally weird, odd left field things going on with my body that all began once I got my Mirena inserted…and stopped when I had my Mirena FINALLY taken out. I wish I had researched it and put two and two together and figured out what it was long before I let it take what it took from me though. But, now I can finally be the wife and mom my daughter and husband deserve.

I’ve had Mirena for about 4 years now. I don’t get pain with sex really, but I seem to bleed during sex often, but I also think it’s related to the size of the man. I was fine with my first boyfriend when I got the Mirenat, but with the last one, I have had BV almost constantly. I’m not positive if it’s related to the Mirena, but I’ve had to do the Metrogel for 5 days so many times…then always end up with a yeast infection and have to treat for that afterwards TOO. That’s almost 2 weeks of NO SEX without a condom. It’s definitely caused issues with our sex life and we can’t enjoy each other like we want to. The odor is horrible. I think we may pass the infection back and forth to each other though, even though his doctors say that men don’t get it. My GYN says yes, they do. Get your man treated!

I’m having it removed soon and having my tubes tied. It sure will be nice to find out if the constant recurring infections finally are GONE after that.

I am now on this. It’s a recent thing, and have had very long periods lasting up to 3 weeks than I stopped, than started back after a few days. I had my first child so I went on it to prevent getting pregnant again, but I have been having pain, and what looks to be a mucus plug (Blood, brown stuff and all) coming out. Mega gross I know sorry for the detail. I am not sure if that’s normal after the first child but many have told me no. I have made an appointment to get it taken out but due to bad snowy weather have had to reschedule and can not get to the hospital because roads have been mega bad.

Me and my boyfriend are now trying to have a baby and I can’t get pregnant.. the Mirena or the infection that it caused couldn’t have made me infertile ?

I had the Mirena IUD for 5 years and loved it…but had cramps and migraines all the time but I loved the fact I didn’t have a cycle and I didn’t have to keep up with taking pills every day. So when my 5 year mark hit I opted to get it replaced with another Mirena. On February 24th of this year I had my IUD replaced and problems started immediately. All I did was sleep as soon as I got home and the following day I had cramps bit I thought it was normal for just getting an IUD inserted. On the 26th of February I was still fatigued and cramping but the pain had now spread to my lower back and a low grade fever started. On Friday February 27th I was in agonizing pain while at work when I got home from work that evening I was running a Temp a ture of 103. I contacted the Doctor that inserted the IUD and was told to go to the ER. They removed my IUD that night and said that I had an infection from the IUD Streptococcus A grew on the IUD when they cultured it. As of today March 15 I am still battling the infection. My Dr that did the IUD insertion has not once did a recheck, when I contacted their office once I finished my 2nd antibiotic they didn’t seem worried and basically said I had a follow up for my IUD insertion on the 24th so I could address it then. Luckily I couldn’t stand the pain yesterday and went back to the ER to find out that the meds I was on did not touch the infection and the infection had gotten worse. So 3 weeks later I am still dealing with issues due to the Mirena. I may lose my ability to have children and I missed almost 2 weeks of work due to this. Every one I know that is considering this product beware they tell you it may cause infections but they don’t tell you how extreme and how long it can last. I was NEVER prepared for this…and it’s a continuing battle.

hi there, im so glad i found this thread. i had the mirena for 5 years before and it was okay. i liked the peace of mind this gave me for contraception and got another mirena in march 2014. in july i got my first ever dose of bv so i went to docs and got antibiotics.
in dec the same year i started with flu like symptoms and then i got the smell in jan 2015 so bv was back. i was majorly busy so left it for a while and it turned into severe pain that had me doubled up and immobilized for about 4 days, i had to take co-codamol and diclofenac till i got to docs, they gave me the metro gel which i used but felt it hadnt gone and irregular period appeared… i got oral antibiotics for another week then another period appeared and pain in my ovaries and lower back and legs has come back…. in last 5 weeks ive had 3 periods…
this coil is coming out!!!! i cant go through the pain any more. My poor skin is getting spotty and dry too and im constantly battling for energy.
im just panicked about what i will do for future contraception as most pills dont agree with me.

I am so glad I read these comments! After going to a wellness dr, switching insurance companies I realized when I got the Mirena all my issues started, I had the copper IUD and after heavy periods my dr at Kaiser suggested Mirena. Since then I have constantly had BV and my dr never suggested this could be the cause! I have had painful sexual inter course and a constant horrible odor that it ruined my sex life… For a while my fiancé thought I was cheating and I thought he was giving it to me, I have been depressed, embarrassed, and constantly on metro gel, antibiotics and then getting yeast infections. My wellness dr always sees bacteria in my urine and blood tests and has been trying to help me fix my ph etc. I finally found my problem and its Mirena. I am writing this comment so women don’t have to suffer like I did this past year.

I had Mirena inserted June 2014. I bled on and off for about 2 months and it got lighter as time when on then had no bleeding at all. After about 2 months after insertion sex started becoming very painful so I went to the local health department, where a friend of mine is a nurse, and I got her to check on it because I was never able to feel my strings from day one. Well she examines me as far as she’s comfortable with going and wasn’t able to locate my strings. She then referred me to go back to the doctor that put it in and my strings were very difficult for her to find but she did and she told me it was still in place. I haven’t had many problems after that except some weight gain. That is until a few months ago I started getting infections and I’m in nursing school myself so I started doing all kinds of research about this infection because it had symptoms of a yeast infection just worse than I’ve ever had before. This is when I came across the possibility that is could be BV. I went to my local health department today mainly to have it removed and see about the infection and sure enough I have BV and was given Flagyl twice a day for 7 days. Well if that wasn’t bad enough she also was not able to find my strings so I now have to wait until Oct 20th for an appointment to have an ultrasound and I have to travel about 90 miles to that appointment. I am just so ready to have this thing out of me! I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone! There are way too many dangerous side effects.

I have had this Mirena inserted not even 6mths ago but guess what? Yep, constant irritation (especially when peeing) and burning. Thought it strange that I had terrible back pain without hurting myself at Xmas time and it’s like my organs (ovaries & pelvic region) feel so sore. Did I mention my usually clear skin has all these pimples (face & back) grrr. I have been to the GP numerous times. Got a swab (no IUD or thrush). I offered suggestion of it being B.V. & told him about my Mirena. Now had Refresh (slight improvement for a week or so) & now Aci-gel which hurts like made/burns. This is a joke, having Mirena removed pronto if Gyno ever returns my call! It’s not worth the pain & agrivation of getting the dumb Mirena!

I got the iud mirena Inserted in April 2013 everything was ok had recheck it was in right place, I could feel my strings. In June 2014 I was having bad abdominal pain went to doctor she checked my iud because I told her I thought it was that. She said it was in place but the strings were long so she cut them. I had bv and was given antibiotics. Then I was alright till August I started having pain again but ignored it then in Sept I realized I hadn’t had period. It normally was loght before mirena so I thought maybe I wouldn’t have one. I felt prego n took a test two weeks later n it was positive. I had a doctor apt set but ended up in er prior to my apt.In the er I was told I was having a miscarriage. They were confused because I told them about my iud. The er doc did a exam and felt the iud. They sent me home to mk an apt so I did the doctor had to test me hcg levels for weeks to determine the miscarriage then did ultrasound the baby was in fact gone n the iud at that time was in place.I told my doc I wanted to remove the iud because of the pregnancy. It was supposed to be an in office procedure she tugged to be what she said was simple and it didn’t budge. She tried again and it hurt so bad I almosted kicked her. She recommended another doctor. She tried n couldn’t get it they then tried another procedure inserting water to see if that work it did not only the strings came off . They then did dilate my cervix that did not work. Then I had mri ct scan it was perforated in my uterine wall. I had surgery to remove the device Jan 2015. Everything went well or at least I thought. I healed I was in pain for longer than expected but I never had anu surgeries or health issues period. I went to follow up she just asked how I felt checked my incision that was it.I started having pain that would come in go n my periods got heavier. I had rhe nexplon put in when she removed the iud so I thought nothing of it. Well in Nov 2015 I had severe pain out of nowhere n it was persist for days.I went to the er theu did ct with cntrast and found out that I had a fragment from the device left inside that is outside the uterine wall n possibly a blood clot that can develop after a surgery of one that I had. I went back to my doctor who said my pain has nothing to do with the iud and if so I would of been hurting. She prescribed meds said to see vascular which I did he saud it was tiny take blood thinners for another twoweeks and I would be ok.during all of this I’m in serve pain popping perks cant function sometimes it’s okay and other times I feel horrible. The pain is unbearable and one doctor says see this doctor first the other says see this doctor.I just want it out.I went to er Wed n was told to go bk to obgyn who said go bk to vascular wth….plus when I had my follow up after finding out it was still in there my ob said when she took it out she noticed a piece missing but thought maybe she got it while trying those other times what???? Now she says it doesn’t harm anything but I searched and dound symptoms from uterine perforation and all my symptoms fit nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, sudden ,chills, dull aching pain …It also says that it’s best to take out pieces right away because it could cause infection pid, sepsis, infertility….but my.obgyn says the fragment is not the issue…I am beyond myself with this situation and just popped another pill.trying to deal with the pain

I had Mirena put in 2 years ago. The first month was horrific cramping and bloating, such that I was crawling on the ground like I haven’t since I was a teenager and endometriosis mounted its first attack.

Then the next 2 years came. I have gained almost 50 pounds (not including bloating and ouffiness that comes and goes). I get sporadic cramps at least 3 times a week. My period is either 2.5 weeks of brown goo, or 2 weeks of actual bleeding. I randomly spot fresh bright blood or pale orange discharge. My underwear and vagina smell (no joke) like a freshly used public portable potty, or like something rancid and sour. I get regular vaginal pain like stabbing and burning that shoots from my uterus all the way down my legs.

And they all tell me that nothing is wrong?!?!

I’m done. I’m getting Mirena removed April 1, and scheduling hysterectomy counseling. I can’t take any more of this.

Since a month after having the mirena put in, I started experience severe fatigue, LOW energy, no libido, weight gain, headaches, Constand BV infection to the point I got refills on my prescription for Flagyl. Severe depression, joint pain and low appetite. I finally had it removed after 3 years because I couldn’t take the feeling of fatigue and BV anymore. The doctor kept saying my symtpoms had nothing to do with the IUD yet they couldn’t come up with anything else being wrong after running blood test after test. I am only a couple weeks out of having it removed but already feeling a difference.

I had the Mirena for about 2 years and experienced fatigue, weight gain, moodiness and even hair loss. I got it removed a few days ago. I wish I would have done my research before getting it. But I have noticed that IUDs are not advertised the way they were a few years ago. I guess because of the side effects.

I, too, have been having all of the above issues for the past three years. The first year or two of having the Mirena IUD was great, with diminished periods and diminished cramps. But then instance after instance of what I first thought were yeast infections that turned out to be BV have been more and more the norm for the past three years. My OB/GYN is still not convinced that it’s the fault of the IUD, but it is scheduled to be taken out this year, as it’s been five years since it was inserted. Before having this damn thing inserted, I went in for an uneventful annual exam at her office, ever since I’ve been going in every three months on average for BV. You think there’s a pattern? I sure do. I am actually looking forward to having my Fallopian tubes removed (along with the IUD) this year so that I no longer have to worry about birth control.

I had the mirena for 2 weeks and it caused an infection. I began experiencing severe abdomen pain, vomiting, high fever, and weakness. When I went into the ER my vitals were very low, my white blood cell count was through the roof, and my fever had reached a 104.9. When I was admitted they diagnosed me as septic. The mirena was immediately removed and I was in the hospital for 5 days. Plus I had to go back to outpatient for 2 weeks in order to receive antibiotics through a picc line. They said of I had waited another day to come into the ER, I wouldn’t be here.

I have recently had my Marina removed (which was inserted 1998 4 weeks ago, reading through some of the comments I am dumbstruck to find that it should not have been in for such long a time and I can only assume this has been the reason for all my female problems, why was I not told about the lifetime of this product, why was my GP not alerted to this as he has access to my records on screen each and every time I have visited the surgery with symptons relating to my abdomen? I am now due to go to the gynaecologist dept, for an examination as since I have had it removed I have been spotting blood, nasty coloured discharge, cramps reaching from down my lower abdomen to what feels like my vagina.

I am researching the effects of the mirena coil – I’m 52 and this is my second one. Went on it for really heavy periods and I’ve had no issues with it at all. Having said that, I generally smell foul down below at the end of every day and can’t go without a panty liner due to heavy discharge and am wondering if I have bv. I do remember having to take antibiotics for an unrelated problem and the smell and discharge disappeared completely, but only for the length of time that I was taking the pills! Probably best to start thinking about its removal though my strings have disappeared – wish me luck!!

Hello all, as I sit here showered fresh and clean last night but the smell is knocking me in the face as I type right NOW!!! It is really a darn shame that this is even a topic of discussion. I was on the mini pill bothering no one, when my OBGYN thought “I think the Mirena would be great for you”. I declined twice and finally said yes October of 2015. Why not? what do I have to lose? OH BOY! WAS I WRONG!!! I lost my natural fun loving attitude with a great smelling vagina for a horrible attitude and the smell of funk and fish. Every time I cross or reposition myself, I feel horrified that someone can smell me. I can surely smell myself. I am only 47 years old with prescriptions of Metronidazole just waiting for me to call and have them refilled so I can have another fun 7 days of this mess every night before bed. I would love to marry 1 day. I can’t even allow myself to be approached or approach anyone with the fear of the smell smacking someone in the nose… I had it removed October of 2017 and went back on the mini pill January of 2017 of course the smell is still trailing behind me and it really upsets me. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ASAP. Or I guess they will just let someone die from Pelvic Inflammatory disease or commit suicide from the embarrassment… SMH

I had Mirena for 5 years, thought it was the best thing ever. Decided to get it again, well two years in I started getting yeast infections and BV. I’ve gone to see multiple doctors, it’s recurrent. I’ve been diagnosed with Vaginitis and more recently CIN II, just had a LEEP procedure 3 weeks ago and surpise, I think I have BV again! I’ve asked all of them if it could be related to my birth control, they all say no. I’ve asked repeatedly to have it taken it, but the military says no because it’s doing it’s job in me not getting pregnant. This is beyond frustrating and I’m happy to see it’s not just me. I do not think I will be getting Mirena a third time. I just hope when next year makes my 5 year mark and I get it removed, my body can recover fully. It’s beyond embarrassing and irritating. Having to be treated every month is absurd… All I want to do it cry, and the fact that i’ve seen 4 different doctors and they all say I just have to keep taking antibiotics or probiotics, or do vaginal and oral treatments is so depressing. I had to do a clindamycin vaginally for a month, and it helped for about 6 months, but it has come back again and again and again… Good luck to all you ladies suffering.

I had mirena placed in 2013. I thought this was the best decision I ever made. Boy was I wrong!! I used to have really bad cramps during my cycle and mirena helped alot with that. After about 6 months my periods were really light and no pain at all. Sometimes I would not get my period at all which I thought was great. Now am nearing my 5th year mark and am getting bv week after week. I have tried everything, flagyl, probiotics, tree top oil, rephresh you name it.. and it keeps coming back. One time I did not have sex for a month thinking that it could be my partner but I got it twice in that month. I cannot stand the smell from my vagina and I feel like everyone around me can smell me which is very depressing. I am glad I read this post because it’s coming out asap! Am just worried what birth control I will use because I am very forgetful when it comes to taking pills daily and am not really thrilled about getting depo-provera shots.

About a week ago I noticed a very foul smelling discharge something I didn’t have before. So I made a appt with my gynecologist . Well of course i asked was it because of the IUD and she said no it not a big deal i polly had it before insertion mind you they check you for everything before placement..I made a appt .She did a string test and check my discharge and of course I had BV..Im not going to spend my 5years going back and forth for BV it annoying and putting a damper on my relationship…I going to make a appt and discuss other options for birth control..I was only using them for my heavy period. Im not sure if this is right for me .Cause this smell from BV is horrible. Please do your research and talk with someone before making this type of decision cause some doctors dont wanna remove it . Who wanna live on antibiotics off and on for 5yrs

However, I constantly continue to get them since having it put in and never use too. I believe it is the mirena causing the issue. I understand the Mirena directly does not cause the infection but believe there is something about the Mirena. After I had my kids my Obgyn kept pressuring me to get the Mirena and I told him what happened on the Nuba Ring. He kept pressuring so I finally did and I’m getting out this Tuesday’s about 4 months later. Horrible discharge, yeast infections, pain and I need my body to bleed every month as I feel it’s cleansing. I would not recommend this to anyone. Women are not lab rats and we shouldn’t be treated as such. I am hoping these infections stop as soon as I take it out but I’m afraid I’m going to go years again with a recurring yeast infection.

I absolutely think so. It’s the only thing that makes any sense. It’s been out for several years now and I still I have recurring BV. Nothing short of absolutely humiliating an embarrassing to keep returning to the doctor for antibiotics even with the Mirena being gone. I got the Mirena IUD in aug. 2018. For the whole first two months I bled. After that, I did not have a period and I loved it because my periods were horrible! (Although sometimes I did worry that my body wasn’t naturally kind of cleaning itself out) I had slight cramping from time to time but not nearly as bad as when I would have my period. I loved having my IUD until about a year later, Dec. 2019. I got a yeast infection & BV at the same time. I had around 3 yeast infections in the past before getting my IUD but had never gotten BV. I didn’t even know what it was until the doctor told me what I had. I took the antibiotics and it went away. But a couple weeks after, both came back (after having sex with my partner). And then almost every time after that when I had sex the infections would come back. Sometimes just BV or just a yeast infection but most of the time I would have both simultaneously. It was extremely frustrating. Obviously effecting my sex life as you can’t have sex on the meds, plus you don’t want anywhere near you down there when that’s going on, and plus almost every time I had sex it would come back so what was the point. It was depressing honestly! I kept going back to the doctor and getting treated and there was one point where they would blame it on me like I don’t have proper hygiene when I’m 20 years old, been sexually active for long before and never had this problem. I was doing everything I could on my part to prevent the infections. Even stopped having sex just so I didn’t have to deal with it and I would still get them. So, the only thing I could think of was that my IUD was causing it. And as much at the nurses loved to say no it’s not the IUD I read so many stories almost EXACTLY like mine online. So I decided to get my IUD out. And I can’t wait to see if this helps and the infections stop coming back but I really think it will.

I just got my 3rd Mirena. I have been having BV since about a year (not even) after my first one was put in. Non stop doctors visits, non stop BV. I ASKED if it was possibly the IUD, and if it was do NOT reinsert (after the 5year Mark) but she assured me it was not the IUD. Well, isn’t it just great when you know more than a fricking doctor!!!! I JUST had another put in 2 weeks go!!! My bad for not doing better research!!!!!

What? how long ago has this lawsuit started? Don’t worry, not seeking a lawyer for this reason.
Are you women commenting on here getting replies from any lawyers simply through commenting?
Anyway, this is scary as heck, I thought this has been going on since early 2000’s? Anyone know? No replies on here, so. (that I see?)

I had the Mirena placed in 2017 and enjoyed my experience for about 10-12 months. Then I started having BV infections every time my boyfriend and I had sex. Over the past couple of years, I have asked my OBGYN if it could be related to the IUD. Each time she stated that there was not enough evidence to support the association. Each time I treat the BV; I get a yeast infection. I’ve been on medication (either metrogel or diflucan) chronically for the past 1.5 years. I just had the Mirena removed today. Does anyone have information about what happened after they removed their IUD? Did the BV stop? How did you transition off the IUD? – switch to oral contraception or no contraception? did you try boric acid for suppression? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I got the mirena back in 2017.
I loved it at first but noticed I kept getting yeast infections.
I thought this was just due to my new partner and having lots of sex but nearly 4 years later still recurrent thrush!!!
Doctors also said not enough evidence for causing this so I’ve been convinced out of removal 3 times!!

Other health issues since that have gotten is the awful chronic back pain – undiagnosable stiffness and popping, sciatica (really bad), hip pain, inflamed pelvic muscles, changes to libido and wetness – uncomfortable sex for myself and partner.

Honestly I’m so done with all of the issues. Everything I’ve done hasn’t worked. I think it’s time to listen to my gut and remove it.

I tried the pill (4different ones) but I’m so sensitive to hormones 🙁 if anyone has anything as good as mirena I would be so grateful for suggestions!!?
Also thinking of switching to different iud maybe ?? Less hormones hoping for better compatibility??

I had mirena placed in early 2010 & removed 6 months later. I had developed this vaginal discharge requiring me to use pantyliners daily. I went on to get a endometrial ablation & tubal ligation in 2010. I no longer have a period & won’t get pregnant but still… I am left with the embarrassing daily discharge. It seems to be getting worse & more frequent. Last week, I brought it up to my new PCP. I’ve brought it up to MDs before & none seemed to think much about it. That it wasn’t a concern. I told my PCP that yes, this has been ongoing for the last 11 yrs & she took a lab sample. Results just came back as positive albicans, dna. As I was researching that, I came across this site & wondering if all of this is due to inserting mirena years ago? A bigger concern…how to stop this daily discharge & keep it from recurring?

When I got mirena inserted the doctors didn’t swab me at all causing me to get pelvic inflammatory disease which had to be treated, since then have had it for about nearly a year and the whole time had reoccurring BV, thrush, utis and bladder infections, i had it taken out today because I am sick of having antibiotics after more antibiotics I am convinced it is iud and I hope that I domt get them anymore does anyone know if the BV and thrush went away after they had it taken out

I have never been so sick in my entire life until I got the iud! I’ve had it since may 2021 about a month now after getting it I have done nothing but throw up, have severe cramps & bleeding, headaches, hot cold chills ( all of the flu like symptoms) this is my second time being down for days since I have gotten it. I had cramps so bad the other day I thought I was having contractions. I went to the er last time I was sick for days they had thought it had been a gastro virus. I am definitely making an appointment to get this removed especially after reading all the comments!!

I’ve had mine in for nearly a year, I’ve been to the emergency room 3 times because of urinary track infections and the worst bv and now yeast infections. I would NOT recommend the iud it has put me through so much. Have had too many utis to count now in a short span of 5 months, and painful sex. My bf of a year has said he feels it during sex, I’m having mine removed and I know all of these problems will leave. So glad I looked on this page and I know I’m not the only one or just one of those “lucky ones”

After I had my daughter, I got mirena iud placed. For 2 years everything was perfect. No period, no cramping, nothing. Almost 2 years to the day I started getting a smell and yellow discharge. I was ready to kill my man thinking he cheated and gave me an std. I went to the doctor and they told me it was be and prescribed meds for it. It went away for a week or 2 but keeps coming back no matter what. I’ve resulted to inserting boric acid in my vagina and if I don’t do it every other day it comes right back. I got a Pap smear and a colposcopy and they found that I have abnormal tissues growing on my cervix . I can’t have them removed because it will make my cervix thin and possibly cause premature birth in my next pregnancy. I NEED ANSWERS. I CANT KEEP LIVING LIKE THIS! IVE NEVER HAD IT BEFORE OR EVEN HEARD OF IT BEFORE! I KNOW THE IUD CAUSED IT !

I have a mirent IUD installed about a year ago and my gyn said it’s a wonderful contraception especially for irregular periods. Well it’s the worst contraception ever. Since placement, bleeding was crazy for the first 4 months it calm down but still irregular bleeding but less and less, definitely cramping time to time but I got a yeast infection (candida glabrata) which is difficult to treat. I truly do believe it due to the IUD, messing up my vaginal PH. I am going to have removed ASAP. And Find a honest gynecologist !!! In this days, don’t be scared to go ask opinion.

I’ve had multiple IUDs over the years. I’m on my second Mirena and it has been a complete nightmare. Recurrent BV and severe back pains. I’ve completely changed my diet, lifestyle, etc. anything I could find to treat the recurrent BV and nothing. I’m planning on getting it removed soon and pray it goes away and I can get back to a normal life.

Does the BV stop for those that removed it?

I am 21 years old and I got the Mirena 3 years ago and I never had BV in my life until getting it. I’ve tested positive 12 times and have been on multiple treatment plans to try and cure the issue, but it ALWAYS comes back 🙁 I just got the IUD removed today and I am now going to be taking the pill again. After reading all these comments, I am really worried the BV will never go away…I am also incredibly worried for my fertility as I desperately want to be a mother in the future.

On year 7 of BV. No treatment has worked. It started during my first iud/Mirena and I didn’t link it. I’ve been moving and now at the end of my second, I’m positive its from the bacterial film many iuds get. I haven’t found a gun in my area with openings yet but plan to get it removed asap.
