SSRI antidepressants are prescribed primarily for treatment of depression, but may also be given for conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorders and social phobia.

The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk are reviewing potential antidepressant birth defect lawsuits for children who were exposed to the medication during pregnancy. As a result of the manufacturers’ failure to adequately warn about the risk of problems when used during pregnancy, thousands of children have serious birth defects. Request a free consultation.

ANTIDEPRESSANT BIRTH DEFECT SIDE EFFECTS

Persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) may be caused as a side effect of SSRI antidepressants when taken after the 20th week of pregnancy.  In November 2006, the FDA issued a public health advisory indicated that the use of Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft or other SSRI antidepressants by pregnant women could lead to a six times greater risk of the birth defect.

PPHN is a serious and potentially fatal condition for the infant where they may become hypoxic because of abnormal blood flow to the heart and lungs.  The manufacturers prior failure to warn of this possible antidepressant side effect may have caused unnecessary injuries for newborns.  If your child or family member has been diagnosed with persistent, pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) after the mother took an antidepressant during pregnancy, request a free consulation.
