Fleet Phospho-soda is an over the counter laxative, which was commonly used as a bowel cleanser for colonoscopy prep or before other intestinal procedures like colon surgery.  The use of the laxative at high doses for bowel prep has been associated with the development of severe kidney damage or renal failure known as Acute Phosphate Nephropathy.

C.B. Fleet Co., Inc., the maker of Fleet Phospho-soda, Fleet Phospho-soda EZ-Prep and Fleet Phospho-soda Accu-Prep, was well aware of the risk of kidney side effects for years, yet they failed to adequately warn about the problems.

The Fleet Phospho-soda lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential kidney failure lawsuits for individuals who developed problems within hours or days after using the product.  Cases are being pursued for those who have been diagnosed with:

  • Acute Phosphate Nephropathy
  • Kidney Failure
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • End Stage Renal Failure
  • Other Kidney Injury
  • Death

FLEET PHOSPHO SODA KIDNEY SIDE EFFECTS

The risk of kidney damage from Fleet Phospho-soda and other oral sodium phosphate products was first reported in 2003.  For prescription products like Visicol and OsmoPrep, warnings about the risk of kidney damage were added in 2006.  However, C.B. Fleet continued to market their over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate solution, Fleet Phospho-soda, as a bowel prep without adequate warnings.

The FDA has confirmed that at least 21 users of oral phosphate solutions like Fleet Phospha soda have developed Acute Phosphate Nephropathy, which is can lead to renal failure, dialysis treatment, a kidney transplant or death.

In December 2008, the FDA announced that a black box warning would be added to the prescription oral sodium phosphate bowel cleansers.  At that time the agency also indicated that over-the-counter laxatives should not be used in high doses for bowel preparation and should only be available as a prescription. Following this announcement a Fleet Phospha soda recall was issued by C.B. Fleet.

FLEET PHOSPHO-SODA CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS

C.B. Fleet faces a mounting number of claims from individuals who have filed a Fleet Phosho-soda lawsuit alleging that their kidney damage or renal failure was caused by the colonoscopy prep solution.

While all signs appear to indicate that Fleet Phospho-soda is safe when used at low doses as a laxative,C.B. Fleet began aggressively marketing the product in the 1990s at higher doses as a bowel cleanser for those preparing for a colonoscopy or colon surgery.  When double doses are used to empty the bowel during prep,  there is a risk of developing acute phosphate nephropathy and kidney damage.

The Fleet Phospho soda lawyers at Saiontz, Kirk & Miles, P.A. are evaluating potential claims for individuals who think they may be entitled to compensation through a Fleet Phospho-soda lawsuit.   All cases are pursued on a contingency fee, which means that there are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained.
