Approximately 750,000 Kugel mesh patches are implanted each year to repair hernias. The patches are designed so that they can be folded when inserted and then spring open to lay flat once in place.
A defect in the design of some of the larger Kugel hernia patches could cause the memory recoil ring to break as a result of stress during placement. There have been multiple reports of serious injuries, including bowel perforation, chronic intestinal fistula and death.

KUGEL HERNIA REPAIR PATCH RECALL
The Compsix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch is manufactured by Davol, Inc., a subsidiary of C.R. Bard, Inc. The following products have been recalled:

An initial recall was announced in December 2005, but additional hernia mesh products were not added to the recall until March 2006 and January 2007. The FDA has classified the hernia patch recall as a Class 1 alert, since the product carries a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health complications, including death.
HERNIA MESH RECALL LAWYERS
The recall lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are investigating potential lawsuits for individuals who had a defective hernia patch inserted. Although the manufacturer was aware of problems with their products, they continued to sell defective hernia mesh patches without taking proper precautions to protect consumers. Financial compensation may be available.
