In January 2008, a number of peanut butter recalls were issued as a result of potential contamination with Salmonella typhimurium bacteria, which has sickened over 400 people, resulting in over 90 hospitalizations and 6 food poisoning deaths.

Large tubs of peanut butter, which were distributed to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and other food service institutions, as well as peanut butter paste used to manufacture a variety of different peanut butter crackers, peanut butter ice cream and other products have been found to be the source of the salmonella outbreak.

Consumption of products containing peanut butter could produce symptoms of food poisoning within 12 to 72 hours after consumption, such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

PEANUT BUTTER FOOD POISONING OUTBREAK

In late 2008 and early 2009, hundreds of people developed severe and life-threatening food poisoning as a result of the Salmonella typhimurium strain of bacteria.

On January 10, 2009, a peanut butter recall was issued by King Nut Companies, involving about 1,000 large containers of peanut butter distributed under the King Nut and Parnell’s Pride labels after one open five pound container at a nursing home was found to be contaminated with Salmonella typhimurium.

Subsequent investigations linked the peanut butter food poisoning outbreak to a manufacturing plant in Georgia operated by Peanut Corporation of America, which made large containers of peanut butter distributed to nursing homes, schools, hospitals and food service institutions, as well as peanut paste used to make a variety of products containing peanut butter.

The presence of Salmonella typhimurium was also confirmed in some peanut butter crackers, leading to recalls of a variety of different types of peanut butter ice cream, peanut butter crackers, peanut butter candy and other products which were made from the paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America.
