The product liability attorneys at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential lawsuits for individuals who have experienced problems with a Zimmer NexGen knee replacement implant, which have been found to have an unacceptably high rate of failure, loosening, pain and other complications.

Since 2003, more than 150,000 Zimmer NexGen knee implants have been sold and many knee replacement patients who received the artificial knee system have required additional revision surgery to address problems.

According to research presented in March 2010, the Zimmer NexGen knee replacement failure rate could be as high as 9%, and many more individuals could experience pain and loosening of the Zimmer knee.  While some prominent surgeons have called for a Zimmer NexGen knee recall to be issued, the manufacturer has insisted that the knee replacement system is safe.

Potential Zimmer NexGen knee replacement lawsuits are being investigated throughout the United States for individuals who suspect they may have received the defective knee implant, and suffered complications.

ZIMMER NEX GEN CR-FLEX KNEE REPLACEMENT PROBLEMS

The Zimmer NexGen CR and Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral components are replacement knee products that have been associated with a high number of reports of:

  • Knee Replacement Failure
  • Revision Surgery
  • Loosening of Replacement Knees
  • Other Knee Complications and Knee Pain

At a March 2010 conference of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, several prominent knee surgeons presented data suggesting the Zimmer NexGen knee replacement failure rate was nearly 9%, and suggested that the actual number of complications that require revision surgery could be even higher.

The researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago looked at 108 knee replacement surgeries using the Zimmer NexGen replacement knee system. They found that 9 patients required knee revision surgery due to Zimmer NexGen knee loosening and pain.  They also found that 39 patients showed evidence of radiographic loosening knee implants, which were not related to specific surgeons, approaches or patient type.

According to the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry, since 2004, Zimmer NexGen knee revision surgery was reported for 120 patients.

At issue is a “high-flex” porous femoral component that attaches to the bottom of the thigh bone. In most knee replacement systems, a type of surgical cement is used to hold the component in place. However, the NexGen CR-Flex does not use a cement to keep it in position. Surgeons say that this may lead to a loosening of the component that requires revision surgery.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Berger, called the failure rate of the Zimmer knee system “horrific.” The same researchers are now investigation other Zimmer knee replacement systems which they say may have problems as well.

It appears that the manufacturer was aware of the risk of problems with Zimmer NexGen knee replacements, yet failed to take adequate steps to reduce the risk of injury or warn consumers.  Financial compensation may be available through a Zimmer NexGen knee lawsuit if one of these knee replacements resulted in loosening, failure or other knee complications.
